If a groundhog has entered your yard, protect the food or structure it is targeting first: install sturdy mesh fencing around vulnerable garden beds, pick up fallen produce, and secure pet or livestock food. Watch to see whether it is using a burrow, and do not seal an occupied entrance. Trapping, removal, and relocation rules vary by location, so check local wildlife regulations before taking action.
What to do first when you spot a groundhog
- Identify what is being damaged. Groundhogs, also called woodchucks, eat plants and may burrow beneath sheds and other structures. If you are not sure which animal is responsible, place an outdoor trail camera near the damage site; Michigan’s wildlife guidance recommends this as an identification aid: Michigan DNR trail-camera guidance.
- Protect food and vulnerable areas. Pick up fallen fruit and garden produce, secure pet or livestock food, and protect high-value garden beds with sturdy metal mesh. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says preventing access to food and secure denning areas is the most effective way to reduce conflicts: Michigan DNR woodchuck guidance.
- Check for a burrow before changing the site. Look for signs of activity and multiple entrances. Do not fill or block an entrance while the animal may still be inside.
- Check local rules before trapping or removal. There is no single national rule for trapping or relocating groundhogs. Contact your state wildlife agency or a licensed nuisance-wildlife professional if removal is necessary.
How to keep groundhogs out of a garden
Physical exclusion is more dependable than relying on scare tactics. A fence must deter both digging and climbing: groundhogs can get under a conventional fence or climb over it.
Build a barrier against digging and climbing
University of Maryland Extension recommends a strong four-foot fence buried 12 inches. Rutgers NJAES describes another approach: bury an L-shaped mesh apron and make the top outward-bent or unstable to climb. These are different ways to address the same two routes into a garden. The right layout depends on the bed and surrounding ground; neither approach is a guarantee if gaps remain.
Maryland Extension’s measurements are installation guidance, not results from a comparative test. For a small, valuable planting area, fencing that encloses only that area may be more practical than fencing the whole yard. Maryland’s guidance also describes adding a low electric wire outside the fence; follow applicable safety requirements if considering electrification.

Reduce easy food access
Pick up fallen fruit and harvest ripe produce promptly. Keep pet and livestock food in secure containers or areas. These steps reduce the food reward that can draw a groundhog to the yard, but they do not by themselves exclude an animal already using a nearby den.
Use deterrents only as supporting measures
Motion-detecting sprinklers may deter groundhogs from small areas, according to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission guidance. Michigan DNR cautions that commercial deterrents may have brief or limited effect, and North Carolina says harassment of an established animal nearly always fails to make it leave the area. A sprinkler can be an extra layer of protection, not a reliable substitute for fencing.

What to do about a burrow under a shed, deck, or porch
First establish whether the burrow is active. Groundhog tunnel systems can have several entrances; closing one opening without accounting for the rest can trap an animal or prompt it to dig elsewhere. Do not pour material into a hole or seal an entrance while the animal may still be inside.
Plan an eviction before sealing entrances
Rutgers NJAES describes securing the perimeter of a structure, using a one-way exit for at least two weeks, and sealing entrances after the animal has left. It warns against eviction during hibernation or breeding seasons and recommends a nuisance-wildlife professional when eviction is needed. Timing and methods should follow current local wildlife guidance; a professional can help account for multiple entrances and the possibility of young.

Do not seal a burrow simply because you have not seen the animal recently. A single litter typically has two to six young, according to University of Maryland Extension, so the timing and occupancy of a den matter. If you cannot confidently determine that the animal has left and no young are present, get professional advice before closing openings.
Understand the risk to the structure
A burrow near a foundation is not proof of serious foundation damage. North Carolina Wildlife says groundhog burrows may reach 50 feet of total tunnel length but typically do not cause significant damage to building foundations. Tunnels can still undermine soil or create a concern around a particular shed, porch, or other structure; have a construction professional assess visible settlement, cracking, or instability rather than assuming the burrow is harmless or catastrophic.

Can you trap and relocate a groundhog?
Do not assume that a live-trapped groundhog can legally be released somewhere else. Rules differ: North Carolina prohibits relocation, Michigan says trapped woodchucks cannot be moved off the property, and Maryland requires landowner permission before release into suitable habitat and flags spring and late-autumn timing concerns. These state examples do not establish the rule where you live. Check current state and municipal regulations before trapping, transporting, or releasing an animal.
Use a licensed nuisance-wildlife professional when local rules are unclear, the burrow is beneath a structure, young may be present, or removal involves a complicated eviction. Avoid methods that could trap an animal underground or expose pets and other wildlife to harm.

Groundhog facts that help with a yard decision
- University of Maryland Extension reports that groundhog burrows can reach up to five feet deep and underground tunnel networks may cover 8 to 66 feet.
- The same Extension guidance says a groundhog typically travels no more than 150 feet from its den to feed. A nearby garden may therefore be a convenient food source, but this figure is not a promise that an animal will stay within that distance.
- A typical litter is two to six young, so avoid sealing a den until occupancy and timing have been considered.
These are descriptive figures from University of Maryland Extension’s 2023 guidance, not comparative evidence about which control method works best.
