When a Samsung washer displays SUD, it has detected an excessive-suds condition. Samsung’s US support guidance says the code does not by itself mean service is needed. The washer pauses so the suds can dissipate, then continues on its own. The usual cause is incorrect detergent use. If suds are still visible, run empty cycles with no detergent or additives until they are gone, then watch whether the code returns.
Which codes mean excessive suds
Samsung lists six displayed variants of the same excessive-suds warning:
- SUd
- 5UD
- Sd
- 5d
- SUdS
- 5Ud5
Samsung’s full error-code list is on its Samsung washing machine information and error codes page. That page is the most detailed source for SUD-specific instructions in the US.
What the washer does on its own
Samsung’s US error-code page states: “The washer has detected an over-sudsing condition and will stop for a short period to allow the suds to dissipate.” The cycle then continues automatically. The code may flash once more at the end of the cycle as a reminder. Allow that pause to finish before you intervene, and avoid interrupting the machine unnecessarily.

- ✔✔【DIY INSTALLATION】▶Disconnect the power before installing this part. The installation needs to use Phillips head screw driver and channel locks. You can find the repair video on YouTube and follow it to install DC31-00054D Drain Pump, as there were plenty of do it yourself videos on there that helped guide you on the repair. Remove the plastic cover of the pump filter, then remove the 2 screws at the back. Remove the hose from the drain pump assembly and pull it out from the bottom of the washer (be careful not to cut the wire). Easy to install ,just remember which connector plugs in to which terminal
How to clear the suds
If the washer still shows suds after the pause, follow these steps in order.
- Confirm the code. Check the display against the six variants above.
- Stop adding anything. Do not add detergent, fabric softener, or other additives while suds remain.
- Run an empty cycle with no additives. Choose the cycle using the controls and manual for your specific model. Samsung’s regional guidance also suggests adding a rinse cycle where your model offers one.
- Repeat empty cycles until no suds remain. Samsung’s US steps call for continuing empty cycles while suds are still present.
- Check the code once the drum is clear. If the code does not return, correct your detergent habit before the next load.
Correcting detergent use
Samsung attributes the warning to incorrect detergent use. Official sources do not publish one universal amount for every washer model, detergent, load size, and water condition, so use these checks instead of a fixed dose.

- Check the washer manual. Samsung’s Laundry Combo user manual advises HE detergent to prevent oversudsing. Confirm whether your model’s manual makes the same recommendation before you rely on it. The manual is available from Samsung’s Laundry Combo user manual.
- Read the detergent label for load size. Measure the amount for the actual load rather than pouring by habit.
- Do not assume a particular product is required. The official guidance concerns the manual and the label, not a brand or premium formula.
When the code returns
If suds are visible
Return to the empty-cycle steps above. A repeat warning with visible suds usually means the suds from the previous load have not fully cleared, or the next load used too much detergent.
If the code persists with no suds
If the SUD code stays on the display even when no suds appear, or other symptoms appear alongside it, the code alone does not confirm a repair need. Consult your model’s manual and contact Samsung’s support center. Samsung’s US guidance directs users there in that situation, through the Samsung washing machine error-codes page.

Pump filter maintenance is a separate task
Samsung’s washer care instructions cover a removable pump filter on front-load machines. That cleaning is routine drain and odor maintenance, not a remedy for excessive suds. Samsung recommends cleaning a front-load pump filter at least monthly, or about every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent. Top-load washers do not have that removable filter.
After a hot cycle, the water inside the filter housing can be hot. Let the machine cool and follow the handling steps in Samsung’s How to clean your Samsung washer guide before opening it.

Pulled off the plastic cover for the PX3516-01 drain pump filter and then the 2 screws behind that. Removed the hoses on the drain pump assembly and pulled it out the bottom of the washer, being careful to not cut the wires (taped the sharp edges of the washer metal).
