What to Do If You’re Stuck in a Long Traffic Backup

Stay in your vehicle during an ordinary traffic backup, follow local directions, and handle a breakdown or severe weather as a separate safety situation.

If traffic has stopped for a long time, stay in your vehicle, keep alert, leave space ahead, and follow directions from police or transportation crews. Don’t walk between live lanes or use the shoulder to get around the queue. A disabled car or a dangerous weather situation calls for a different response: move out of traffic only if you can do so safely, make the vehicle visible, and contact local help.

What to do while traffic is stopped

In an ordinary backup, treat the line of stopped vehicles as an active roadway, not a place to get out and investigate. Conditions can change quickly when traffic begins moving or drivers try to change lanes. Stay inside, remain buckled, and watch for instructions from police, road crews, or other local authorities.

  • Leave room between your vehicle and the one ahead so you can respond if traffic moves or an emergency vehicle needs access.
  • Keep your phone available for official updates or calls, but do not drive while distracted when the queue starts moving.
  • Do not walk among lanes, cross a closed roadway, or use the shoulder to bypass traffic.
  • Do not assume an alternate route is open or safe. Follow local directions and verified road-closure information.

There is no single nationwide official procedure specifically for every routine traffic jam. Local traffic-control instructions take precedence, and a breakdown or an immediate threat such as fire requires a separate decision.

If you are wondering, “What should I do if I’m stuck in traffic for hours?”, begin by distinguishing a stopped queue from a vehicle emergency. A long wait can be frustrating, but leaving the car to walk to the front of a backup may put you in live traffic and may conflict with a closure or responder operation. Be ready to move when the queue advances, and give police, transportation crews, and emergency responders room to direct traffic.

Use your phone for official traffic or weather updates when available, and make calls only when needed. When traffic starts moving, put the phone away and return your attention to driving. If responders give an instruction that differs from a general tip, follow their direction. Road layouts, closure procedures, and emergency contacts vary, so do not try to guess what is happening ahead or choose a detour solely because it appears shorter.

If your vehicle breaks down in the queue

First decide whether the vehicle can be moved without creating more danger. Turn on the hazard lights. If it is safe and possible, move out of the travel lanes to a shoulder or another protected area; do not attempt a risky maneuver just to clear the road. Arizona DOT advises moving a vehicle involved in a crash or other situation requiring assistance to a safe area when possible, calling 911 for emergency assistance, and watching approaching traffic (Arizona DOT).

  1. Make the vehicle visible. Turn on hazard lights. If stopped in winter conditions, NHTSA also advises using bright markers and the interior dome light to help others see the vehicle.
  2. Call for help. Call 911 for an emergency, such as a crash, a dangerous roadside position, or a threat to someone’s safety. For a non-emergency breakdown, contact the appropriate local assistance service or roadside provider. Follow any local instructions about whom to call.
  3. Choose a safe place to wait. Guidance varies by jurisdiction and situation. Connecticut DOT advises drivers in a highway breakdown or emergency to pull as far off the roadway as possible, call 911, and remain inside with the seat belt fastened and hazards on while waiting. It says to leave only if fire makes staying unsafe; if leaving because of fire, get well away from both the vehicle and travel lanes (CTDOT). Do not treat this Connecticut-specific emergency guidance as a universal rule for every road or circumstance.
  4. Follow the responder’s directions. Keep an eye on approaching traffic, and do not cross a closed roadway or return to a vehicle in a hazardous position unless authorities say it is safe.

For evacuation routes, North Carolina DOT says to move a troubled vehicle safely to the shoulder, stay with it, and call highway patrol or an auto club. It also cautions that roadway networks differ by state, so use the relevant local guidance rather than assuming one state’s procedure applies everywhere (NCDOT).

The key difference is that a vehicle that still runs in a normal queue is not automatically a roadside emergency. If the car becomes disabled, use hazards and move it only if doing so is safe. If you cannot get out of a travel lane safely, do not make a sudden move that could cause a collision; contact local emergency help when the position creates immediate danger. For a highway emergency, CTDOT’s January 27, 2025 guidance emphasizes staying inside, belted, while awaiting assistance unless fire makes that unsafe. Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said: “Staying inside your vehicle with your seat belt fastened and pulling as far off the road as possible is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.” The statement is specifically about highway breakdowns or emergencies, not every ordinary traffic stoppage. CTDOT also quoted Connecticut State Police Colonel Daniel Loughman: “Staying inside your car, and dialing 911 is the safest choice.”

When you approach a stopped emergency vehicle

Give stopped emergency vehicles room. NHTSA says all 50 states have Move Over laws covering emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Its guidance says to move to a lane that is not immediately adjacent when possible, or slow down if you cannot change lanes safely. The agency’s page also says that 19 states and Washington, DC extend such laws to other stopped vehicles with flashing or hazard lights; coverage can change, so follow the law where you are driving (NHTSA Move Over law guidance).

Do not make an abrupt lane change into another occupied lane. If traffic is too tight to move over safely, slow down and follow directions from emergency personnel or road crews.

This matters even when you are already part of a backup: an emergency vehicle may be approaching or working at the scene ahead. Avoid blocking its route, watch for instructions, and do not assume that a hazard-light vehicle is covered by exactly the same legal requirements in every state. The numbers above describe the NHTSA page as accessed; they are not a substitute for the law in your location.

If severe weather is part of the delay

Flooding

Do not use a flooded road as an escape route. NHTSA warns that 12 inches of rushing floodwater can carry away most cars and advises turning around when a road is flooded or blocked by barriers. That warning is about encountering floodwater; it is not a reason to leave a traffic queue for an unverified detour. Check official conditions and obey closures (NHTSA winter driving tips).

A road that looks passable can still be dangerous when water is moving or a barrier is in place. “Turn around” applies when you encounter the floodwater or blocked road, not as permission to reverse through traffic or seek an improvised route out of a backup. Wait for official direction and use a route confirmed open by local authorities.

Snow and cold

If you are stopped or stalled in winter weather, NHTSA advises staying with the car, making it visible with bright markers and the interior dome light, and keeping the exhaust pipe clear of snow. Run the engine only sporadically for warmth, and avoid running the vehicle for long periods with the windows closed or in an enclosed space (NHTSA winter driving tips).

Snow can cover the exhaust pipe while a vehicle is stopped. Clear it when conditions and your position allow you to do so safely; do not walk into live traffic to reach it. NHTSA’s advice to run the engine only sporadically is intended to help conserve fuel and reduce the risks of running a vehicle for long periods with closed windows or in an enclosed space. Keep the vehicle visible with bright markers and the dome light, and stay with the car in winter conditions.

Snow and sleet can also raise crash risk: NHTSA reports that in 2023 there were 320 fatal traffic crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes when snow or sleet conditions were present. These are weather-condition crash figures, not counts of crashes caused by long traffic backups (NHTSA winter driving tips).

Prepare before a long drive

NHTSA recommends checking weather, road conditions, and traffic before setting out, and carrying an emergency roadside kit. A kit is preparation for delays or breakdowns; it does not make it safe to leave a car in an active highway queue. NHTSA’s suggested supplies include:

  • Cell phone and charger
  • First-aid kit and flashlight
  • Flares and a white flag, or other warning devices
  • Jumper cables, tire-pressure gauge, jack, and ground mat
  • Gloves and basic repair tools
  • Water, nonperishable food, and needed medicines
  • Maps and emergency blankets, towels, or coats

For winter travel, NHTSA additionally lists a shovel, broom, ice scraper, abrasive traction material, warning devices, blankets, water, food, and needed medicine (NHTSA winter driving tips). Check what a kit actually contains and choose supplies suited to your climate and trip; NHTSA does not rank commercial kits.

When comparing an emergency roadside kit with a list of supplies you assemble yourself, look at the contents rather than the label. Does it include a phone charger, flashlight, first-aid supplies, and warning devices? For a long trip, consider whether you also have water, nonperishable food, and any medicines you need. In winter, check for a shovel, ice scraper, blankets, and traction material. NHTSA lists these items as preparation supplies but does not test or rank commercial kits, so no particular brand or bundle is endorsed here. Contents vary; check the package and add what is missing for your conditions.

A roadside kit can help you prepare for a delay, but it is not a reason to exit a car in an active highway queue or attempt an unsafe repair at the roadside. If you are planning ahead, keep essentials accessible and check weather, traffic, and road conditions before departure. If conditions change during the drive, use official updates and obey closures rather than relying on a map route that may cross a blocked or hazardous road.
