If construction blocks your street, driveway, building entrance, or normal approach, first read the carrier’s exact tracking status, then contact the carrier through the channel named in that status. If a technician or other home-service visit is scheduled, call that provider as soon as you know the closure dates. Explain the official detour, give a working phone number, ask what access arrangement is permitted, and get any change or rescheduling confirmed in writing.
Do not assume a driver or technician can use a side entrance, private road, temporary lane, or meeting point. Carrier and provider procedures vary by shipment, sender restrictions, local authority, and safety conditions. No nationwide rule requires a carrier or technician to use an alternate route.

What to do immediately after a construction-related delivery failure
1. Read the actual tracking status
Open the shipment’s tracking page or app and record the exact wording, time, and date of the scan. A construction closure may appear as a no-access, attempted-delivery, missed-delivery, or similar status. The status determines whether the carrier plans another attempt, requires you to schedule one, or offers a hold or pickup option.
Take a screenshot or save the tracking number. You will need that information when speaking with customer service, a local depot, a post office, or the sender.

2. Check the approach without entering a dangerous area
From a safe location, determine what is actually blocked: the public street, a driveway, a building entrance, an elevator, a loading area, or the normal walking approach. Look for an official detour sign or notice from the road agency, utility, property manager, or contractor. Do not cross barricades, enter an active work zone, or ask a driver to do so.
3. Contact the carrier using its instructions
Follow the phone number, door tag, app prompt, or tracking link supplied by the carrier. Explain that construction or utility work prevents normal access and ask which choices are available for this specific shipment. Depending on the carrier and shipment, the choices could include an automatic reattempt, scheduled redelivery, a hold, pickup, return-to-sender processing, or no change at all.

If an appliance installer, repair technician, inspector, cleaner, medical service, or other provider is due to arrive, call that company rather than relying on the delivery carrier to pass along the closure. Give the closure dates, the official detour information, a callback number that will work on the appointment day, and a clear description of the safe approach. Ask whether the provider can legally and safely use it, needs a designated meeting point, or must reschedule.
How to interpret USPS “No Access to Delivery Location”
For the United States Postal Service, “No Access to Delivery Location” is a literal tracking status. USPS lists public utility work as one possible cause. The status does not prove that a carrier will use another entrance or leave the item somewhere else; it records that the normal delivery location could not be reached.
USPS’s tracking help tells customers: “Check the area for anything that might block delivery access to your home or mailbox.” Treat that as a prompt to identify the obstruction and keep the approach clear when work ends, not as permission to enter a closed area.
Automatic USPS reattempt
USPS says it will automatically reattempt delivery on the next business day after this access failure. That is an operational instruction for this status, not a guarantee that every item will be delivered on the next attempt. A signature requirement, a sender restriction, a continuing closure, or another address problem can still prevent completion.

When to submit a USPS service request
If more than 24 hours have passed after the no-access scan, use the tracking number to submit a service request to the local Post Office. Keep the scan time, the construction notice, and any door-tag information available so the local office can identify the route and item.
USPS redelivery: timing, eligibility, and steps
USPS redelivery can be requested online with the tracking number or with the barcode on PS Form 3849. The address and the particular item must be eligible; not every mailpiece can be scheduled through the redelivery page.
- Open the USPS redelivery service and enter the tracking number or the PS Form 3849 barcode.
- Verify the delivery address and review the item information shown.
- Select an offered redelivery date and provide the requested contact details.
- Submit the request and save the confirmation number or screenshot.
- Keep the approach to the mailbox or entrance clear and accessible for the selected attempt.
The USPS redelivery page states that a request submitted by 2 a.m. Central time Monday through Saturday can be scheduled for same-day redelivery. Requests submitted after that cutoff, or outside the stated days, are scheduled for the next day. Check the page when you submit because eligibility, cutoff handling, and service availability can change.
When waiting is better than requesting redelivery
Waiting for the automatic next-business-day attempt may be sensible when the closure will be removed before the carrier returns and no signature or recipient presence is needed. Request redelivery when you need a particular date or want to coordinate an adult recipient. Choose neither option until you know whether the detour will still block the route.
FedEx options after a blocked approach
FedEx directs recipients to use the door tag or tracking number to identify the next step. Read the instructions on the specific shipment; a door tag can contain different choices from those shown in a general tracking search.
Hold or redirect through Delivery Manager
Depending on shipment eligibility, FedEx Delivery Manager may allow you to place a package on hold or redirect it to a nearby FedEx location or participating retail location. Restrictions can depend on the sender, package type, address, signature requirement, and account settings. The option may not appear even when a construction detour exists, so do not promise yourself that a hold or redirect will be available.

- Enter the tracking number or use the door-tag instructions.
- Review the shipment-specific choices and any stated date, identification, or signature requirements.
- Check the proposed pickup location, hours, and travel distance before confirming.
- Submit the change only after confirming that the sender permits it and that you can collect the package.
- Save the confirmation and bring the required identification or door tag to pickup.
Choosing among a reattempt, redelivery, hold, or pickup
Use the following questions to select an option. The answer can differ for two packages arriving at the same address because the sender and shipment rules may differ.

Preparing for an upcoming delivery or home-service visit
Create a short access brief
Write one message that you can send to the carrier, dispatcher, property manager, and service provider. Include:

- the street, building, unit, or driveway affected;
- the construction or utility closure dates and daily hours, if known;
- the official detour or access map, rather than an informal description;
- the safest approved approach, entrance, loading point, or meeting point;
- height, weight, vehicle, parking, gate, elevator, or escort limits;
- a phone number that will be answered on the appointment day; and
- the tracking number, work order, appointment number, or delivery reference.
Ask what access arrangement is permitted
Ask the carrier or provider a specific question: “Can your driver or technician use this named approach under your safety and routing rules?” If the answer is no, ask whether the item can be held, redelivered after a stated date, collected at an approved location, or rescheduled. Do not present a private-road entrance, neighboring driveway, or temporary lane as available unless its owner and the relevant authority have approved it.
Confirm the plan in writing
After a phone call, request an email, text, app confirmation, or updated appointment record. The written note should identify the date, time window, address, access point, and any requirement for you to meet the driver or technician. If the provider cannot guarantee the arrangement, obtain a rescheduled date instead of relying on an informal promise.
Prepare on the day
Check whether the closure schedule changed, remove movable obstacles from the approved approach, keep your phone audible, and be ready at the agreed meeting point. Never move barricades or direct a vehicle around them. If conditions become unsafe, call the carrier or provider before the arrival window ends.

The USPS Domestic Mail Manual, section 508.3.1.4, states: “The customer is responsible for keeping the approach to his or her mailbox clear to facilitate delivery.” Clearing means maintaining a lawful, safe approach; it does not authorize entry into a work zone or a route that the Postal Service has not approved.
USPS planning guidance also calls for local coordination during construction planning. Its PO-632 handbook sections were published in July 2020, so confirm current requirements with the local Post Office for a live project. A contractor, utility, municipality, landlord, or homeowners association may control the detour, but none of those parties can independently guarantee that a carrier will accept a new mailbox location or route.
Troubleshooting common situations
The tracking page has not changed
Keep the tracking number and wait through the carrier’s stated update window. If the USPS no-access scan is more than 24 hours old, submit the local Post Office service request. For another carrier, use the contact method on the tracking page or door tag and ask whether the parcel is being held, reattempted, or returned.
The carrier says the alternate entrance is not usable
Ask for the exact reason: safety, vehicle clearance, sender restriction, signature rule, private-property access, or route policy. Then choose only an option the carrier displays for the shipment, such as a scheduled attempt, approved pickup, or rescheduling. Do not pressure the driver to bypass a closure.

A technician is already en route
Call the dispatch number immediately, provide the official detour, and ask whether the technician can stop at a permitted meeting point. If not, have dispatch record the closure as the reason for rescheduling so you are not relying on a no-show explanation.
The road is privately controlled
Get written access instructions from the road owner or property manager and send them to the carrier or provider. Permission from the property owner does not override the carrier’s safety or routing rules, so wait for the carrier’s confirmation before directing a vehicle onto the road.
What construction-related equipment can and cannot do
Reflective signs or markers can communicate an approved, open approach, but they cannot create access through a closure. A parcel lockbox or camera may help with ordinary deliveries, yet neither solves a blocked street, a required signature, or a carrier’s refusal to enter an unsafe area. An improvised temporary mailbox is especially unsuitable because USPS placement requires approval.
Keep a simple record
Save the tracking page, door tag, closure notice, call times, names or reference numbers, and written appointment changes. This record helps when a package is reattempted after the closure, when a sender asks why delivery was delayed, or when a service provider disputes whether access was available. Once the route is open, remove temporary instructions that could send a driver toward the former detour.
