Stop using the set for critical work, verify that the socket or ratchet is genuinely absent, and preserve the box, case, labels and receipt. Then contact the seller promptly about an incomplete purchase and contact the tool maker through its official support channel. Give both parties the brand, model, proof of purchase and clear photos.
Do not assume that a warranty covering a tool that fails in use also covers a piece missing from the box, or a piece lost later. The correct remedy depends on the brand, model, seller, country, purchase terms and what happened to the part.

1. Make the set safe and verify what is missing
Before filing a claim or buying anything, establish exactly which item is absent. A socket can be hidden under a case insert, in a second tray or in packaging that was discarded with the cardboard. A ratchet may be stored in a separate compartment or wrapped individually.
Use the contents list and case layout
- Find the printed contents list, product manual or parts diagram.
- Compare every marked position in the case with the physical pieces.
- Check the lid, removable trays, side pockets, foam, cardboard sleeves and any accessory bag.
- Write down the missing item exactly as the manufacturer identifies it, including its size and drive size if those are listed.
Keep the packaging and parts diagram even after you find the missing piece. They can show whether the set was factory-packed and help a seller or manufacturer identify the correct configuration.

Separate three different situations
- Missing on arrival: the set was incomplete when you opened it. This is primarily an incomplete-purchase or replacement-parts issue.
- Lost after opening: the set was complete, but the item disappeared later. Many warranties exclude loss or theft.
- Defective or damaged: the item was present but does not work, is broken or arrived damaged. A defect or damage claim may follow different terms from a missing-part claim.
Use the correct description when you contact support. Saying that a socket was “missing” when it was actually lost, or that a ratchet was “defective” when it was never included, can send the claim to the wrong process.
2. Document the set exactly as received
Take photographs before rearranging the kit. A complete record prevents arguments about whether the piece was omitted, misplaced or removed after delivery.
Photographs to take
- The open case showing every compartment and the empty location.
- The closed case, outer carton, shipping label and any security seal.
- The brand, model number, barcode and serial or batch information, if present.
- The contents list or diagram with the absent item identified.
- Any torn packaging, crushed box, broken seal or visible shipping damage.
Keep the original receipt, order confirmation, invoice and delivery record. If you bought the set in person, note the store, purchase date and transaction number. If you ordered online, save the order page and the seller’s return or replacement terms as a PDF or screenshot.

Purchase verification matters. Harbor Freight’s stated no-charge replacement-parts process, for example, requires verification of purchase. That policy is an example of one company’s process, not a universal requirement.

3. Ask the seller to remedy an incomplete new set
Contact the seller as soon as you confirm the omission. State that the set arrived incomplete and identify the exact item. Ask whether it will send the missing piece, exchange the complete set or provide another remedy.
What to include in the message
- Order or receipt number and purchase date.
- Brand, product name, model number and set size.
- The missing socket or ratchet, including its marked size and drive size.
- A short description: “The item was absent when the sealed set was opened.”
- Photographs of the case, label, contents list and packaging.
- Your preferred remedy: an exact replacement part or an exchange of the set.
Keep the request factual. Do not return the set before the seller explains its procedure; some sellers require the entire kit, while others can send one part. The available return period, shipping responsibility and exchange rules are controlled by the seller’s current terms and the purchase location. There is no single retailer policy that applies to every new tool set.
When an exchange is usually the cleaner option
Request a complete-set exchange when the missing item is a specialized ratchet, when several pieces are absent, when the case or packaging is damaged, or when the seller cannot confirm that an individual replacement is identical. An exchange also preserves matching finish, markings and fit across the set.

A one-piece shipment can be faster and avoids returning a heavy kit when the omission is limited to a standard socket. Confirm in writing that the supplied part is the exact model or approved substitute before accepting that remedy.

4. Contact the manufacturer as a separate route
After opening a seller case, use the manufacturer’s official support channel. Tell the manufacturer whether the item was missing on arrival, lost later or failed during use. Include the model number for the set and, if available, the model number stamped on the individual tool.
Ask two precise questions: “Does this product have a replacement-parts process for a piece missing from a new set?” and “Can you supply the exact individual socket or ratchet for this model?” A warranty for a failed tool and a remedy for an incomplete box are not automatically the same.
Information support may request
- Proof of purchase and seller name.
- Set model number and the individual piece’s model number, if it has one.
- Country or region of purchase.
- Photos showing the empty location and product labels.
- A description of whether the piece was missing, damaged, nonfunctional, lost or stolen.
Ask whether shipping, handling or a return is required and whether the replacement is free. Save the case number, the representative’s instructions and any deadline.

The following US policy examples show why you must read the terms for your exact product and circumstance. They are not a universal warranty rule and should not be generalized to another country or a different edition of a set.

Harbor Freight separately states that loss or theft is not covered by its lifetime hand-tool warranty and directs customers to check whether a replacement tool can be purchased. That distinction is a useful warning: a piece that disappeared after you received the set may not qualify for the same remedy as a factory omission.
6. If you must buy a replacement, match the specifications
Do not order the first socket or ratchet that looks similar. A part can fit the fastener and still be incompatible with the set or unsafe for the intended use.
Socket checklist
- Socket size: Match the marked SAE or metric size exactly.
- Drive size: Match the square drive on the ratchet, such as the size identified by the set maker.
- Depth: Confirm standard or deep construction when clearance or exposed thread length requires one.
- Point configuration: Match the set’s six-point or twelve-point style where that matters for the fastener and intended use.
- Impact rating: Use an impact-rated socket only with an impact tool, and do not substitute a chrome hand socket where the maker requires an impact socket.
- Brand and model: Prefer the manufacturer’s part number or a replacement the seller confirms as compatible.
Ratchet checklist
- Match the drive size and the set’s required style or model.
- Check whether the replacement must fit a particular case recess or accessory system.
- Confirm the direction selector, head profile and attachment interface if the maker lists them as model-specific.
- Ask the manufacturer or seller to confirm compatibility before paying.
If the missing item has no visible model number, send a photograph of the set label and the empty case position. The maker can often identify the part from the complete set model even when the individual piece is unmarked.

The cheapest option is not always the fastest, and a free part may require more effort than exchanging the kit. Compare the practical consequences in writing.

8. Decide based on the work you need to do
If the tool is needed for immediate construction work
Do not improvise with an undersized socket, a mismatched drive adapter or a damaged ratchet on a critical fastener. Use a verified compatible tool from another complete kit, borrow one, or pause that task until the correct replacement arrives. Record the missing item so it is not mistakenly treated as available during a handoff.
If the set is still within the seller’s return period
Open the seller case first, because an exchange may resolve the entire problem without requiring you to prove a warranty defect. Follow the seller’s instructions and keep tracking information for any return.
If the seller has no stock
Ask the manufacturer whether the individual part is available and whether a back-order date exists. If you buy from another source, keep the original set’s model information and compare the replacement before using it. A complete second set, such as CRAFTSMAN’s CMMT72728 728-piece mechanics tool set, demonstrates that large kits containing sockets and ratchets exist, but it is not evidence that the set is compatible or economical for replacing one unidentified piece.

- Throwing away the packaging: labels and diagrams often contain the information support needs.
- Waiting until the warranty period expires: report an incomplete set promptly, even if you are still deciding between an exchange and a part.
- Calling a lost tool a manufacturing defect: use an accurate description so the claim reaches the right team.
- Buying by appearance alone: matching color or a similar size does not establish drive, depth, point or model compatibility.
- Returning only part of a set without instructions: the seller may require the complete kit or may be able to send one piece without a return.
- Assuming a policy applies worldwide: the cited US examples may differ by country, seller, purchase channel and product version.
10. A message you can send
Use a short, precise request so the recipient can route it quickly:
“I purchased a new [brand and model] tool set on [date] from [seller]. When I opened the set, the [exact socket size and drive size or ratchet model] was missing from the listed contents. Attached are photos of the case, label, contents diagram and packaging, along with my proof of purchase. Please confirm whether you will send the exact replacement part or exchange the complete set, and advise whether you need the original kit returned.”
If the piece was lost or failed later, change the description to reflect that fact and ask which warranty or parts process applies. Keep every reply and case number until the issue is closed.
11. The practical decision rule
For a genuinely incomplete new set, pursue both channels: ask the seller for an exchange or missing-part remedy, and ask the manufacturer whether its parts or warranty process covers the exact situation. Choose the option that gives you a verified match with the least return effort and total cost. Only purchase a replacement after the size, drive, construction, model and intended use are confirmed.
