What to Do If a New Appliance Won’t Fit Through Your Doorway

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a new appliance will not fit through a doorway, stop the delivery plan before anyone forces it through. Measure the appliance, packaging and every part of the route from the truck to the installation space. If the narrowest opening is too small, call the seller or delivery provider with the model number and your measurements. Ask what access work its crew is permitted to perform, whether it must be arranged in advance, and what charges or order consequences apply. If the route still cannot be made accessible, ask the seller about a model that fits and confirm the specific return, refusal and redelivery terms.

A clear space in the kitchen, laundry room or utility room does not prove that the appliance can get there. Doorways, trim, hallways, stairs, tight turns, railings and the appliance’s packaging can create a separate failure point.

Why an appliance can fit the room but not the house

Appliance dimensions answer only one question: whether the unit can occupy the intended location. Delivery requires a second test: whether the packaged or otherwise deliverable unit can travel from the vehicle to that location. A refrigerator may fit between cabinets but fail at the front door. A washing machine may clear the hallway yet be impossible to turn at the laundry-room entrance. A range may pass the doorway but not the stair landing.

Treat the route as a chain. The appliance must clear every link, and the narrowest usable opening determines whether the delivery succeeds. Usable width is the space left after accounting for door trim, hinges, handles, baseboards, handrails and other projections—not merely the nominal width printed on a building plan.

Measure the complete delivery route before delivery day

Use a tape measure and record the dimensions rather than relying on visual estimates. GE Appliances and Whirlpool both advise walking the actual route and identifying restrictions before delivery.

  1. Start at the unloading point. Identify where the delivery vehicle will stop and the surface over which the appliance must travel. Include gates, steps, ramps, porches and changes in level between the vehicle and the entrance.
  2. Measure every opening. Record the narrowest clear width and height of the exterior door, interior doors, hallway entrances and any other opening. Measure with the door open as far as it can safely go. Note trim, thresholds and protruding stops that reduce the opening.
  3. Check the straight sections. Measure hallway width and ceiling height. A unit can clear a doorway but strike a wall, light fixture or low ceiling while being moved.
  4. Check turns and landings. Measure the space on both sides of each doorway, at the foot and top of stairs, and at every corner. A diagonal turn often needs more room than the appliance’s face width.
  5. Inspect stairs and railings. Record stair width, headroom, landing size and the position of handrails or banisters. Ask the provider whether its crew handles stairs and under what conditions.
  6. Compare the route with delivery dimensions. Use the exact model’s documentation and determine whether the stated dimensions are packaged, unpackaged or both. Packaging can add several inches and may change how the unit can be held.
  7. Clear movable obstacles. Remove furniture, rugs, pictures, planters, stored boxes and other personal possessions from the route. Secure pets and protect floors according to the provider’s instructions.

Write down the smallest usable width and height. If any point is narrower than the appliance’s deliverable dimensions, treat the route as blocked until the seller or delivery provider approves a specific solution.

Measure the final installation space separately

After checking the route, measure the opening where the appliance will operate. The installation space has requirements that are independent of delivery access.

  • Height, width and depth: Measure the finished space, including countertops, cabinets, flooring and wall irregularities. Compare it with the exact model’s installation instructions.
  • Ventilation clearances: Refrigerators, dryers, ranges and other appliances may require space around the cabinet or at the rear. Do not substitute a clearance from another model.
  • Hookups: Locate electrical outlets, gas connections, water supply, drains and vents. Confirm that the appliance’s connections can be reached without crushing a hose or cord.
  • Door and lid movement: Check that doors, drawers and lids can open fully without striking a wall, island or neighboring appliance.
  • Floor and support: Verify that the finished floor can support the appliance and that the path does not include a soft, damaged or uneven surface that the delivery service will reject.

Whirlpool publishes example clearances for some laundry and refrigerator installations, but those figures are not universal. Follow the selected model’s manual and installation sheet. A model can satisfy the room measurements while still failing at a doorway or turn.

Call the seller or delivery provider before the appointment

Do not wait until the crew is at the door. Give the provider the appliance model, the measured bottleneck and a description or photograph of the obstruction. Ask for the answer to be added to the delivery record.

Questions to ask

  • Can the crew remove the appliance’s doors, handles or other parts for this model?
  • Can it remove an exterior house door, and must that work be arranged in advance?
  • Will the crew move through this stairway, narrow turn or threshold?
  • Are there clearance, surface or weather conditions under which delivery will be refused?
  • Is access work included, or is there an additional service charge?
  • Who is responsible for reinstalling removed parts and checking that the appliance operates?
  • What happens if the crew cannot complete the delivery: return, refusal, storage, redelivery or cancellation?
  • Will a second appointment incur a fee, and how soon can it be scheduled?

Policies differ by provider, model and location. Whirlpool says its delivery agent will try to remove refrigerator or freezer doors when necessary, but its broader guidance also says crews generally will not remove interior doors, handrails, banisters or customers’ personal possessions. That example is not a promise that another provider will perform the same work.

Decide whether the obstacle can be changed safely

Separate obstacles into those you can remove yourself, those the provider may approve, and those that should not be altered for delivery.

Movable household items

Furniture, freestanding shelves and stored goods can usually be cleared before the appointment. Protect corners and floors, but do not leave a narrow corridor that forces the crew to carry the appliance over objects.

  • Provides both SAE and metric measurements
  • Wide 3/4-inch blade with easy readability
  • Convenient belt clip and lanyard for easy access

Appliance doors or handles

Some refrigerators and similar units can be made narrower by removing doors or handles. Only the provider or a qualified installer should perform this when its policy allows it. Ask whether the appliance must be unpacked first, whether special tools are required and whether removal affects the warranty or installation service.

Exterior doors

An exterior door may be removable, but hinges, closers, security devices and weather seals can complicate the work. Confirm who will remove and refit it. Never dismantle a door, frame or security feature without approval from the responsible service.

Interior doors, railings and banisters

These are building components, not ordinary delivery obstacles. Many delivery services will not remove them. If the provider excludes them, arrange qualified building work in advance or select a different appliance; do not pressure a crew to improvise.

If the route still fails, change the order rather than forcing the appliance

If the provider cannot approve the necessary access work, contact the seller promptly. Frigidaire’s official “Prepare for Your Delivery” page states: “If the product will not fit, please contact our call center at 800-669-6779 so an associate can work with you on finding a product that will!” The statement is specific to Frigidaire’s process; another seller may use a different contact method or offer different remedies.

When discussing a replacement, provide the narrowest route measurements, not just the room dimensions. Ask the seller to confirm the replacement’s delivered dimensions, packaging dimensions if available, required installation clearances and door-swing needs in writing.

Do not assume an exchange is free

Before refusing delivery, opening packaging or arranging another attempt, read the order-specific terms. Check:

  • Whether the item remains eligible for return after delivery is refused or installation begins.
  • Any restocking, pickup, return-transport or redelivery charge.
  • Whether a replacement order starts a new delivery schedule.
  • How long the seller will hold the appliance and whether storage fees apply.
  • Whether local law or the seller’s location-specific policy changes these rules.

There is no universal promise that a failed delivery, exchange or second attempt will be free.

Fit test What to compare Why it matters
Delivery path Exact delivered width and height at the narrowest doorway, hallway, stair and turn A model that fits the room can still be stopped before reaching it.
Installation space Cabinet dimensions, ventilation, hookups and door or drawer swing from the model’s instructions Passing the doorway does not guarantee safe operation or a proper installation.
Access policy Permitted door or handle removal, exterior-door work, stairs, charges and refusal or redelivery terms The provider’s written limits determine whether a theoretical route is deliverable.

Ask for exact model numbers in any comparison. Appliance families can contain different depths, hinge arrangements and clearance requirements, so a measurement from one version cannot be applied to another.

What to do on delivery day

  1. Recheck the route. Remove anything that has been placed in the way since your original measurement and keep children and pets away.
  2. Show the crew the tight point. Explain the measured clearance and any access arrangement recorded with the provider.
  3. Do not authorize unapproved dismantling. If the crew proposes removing a door, railing or appliance component that was not agreed, ask the dispatcher or seller to confirm the work and any charge.
  4. Stop if the route is unsafe. A crew should not scrape walls, force an appliance through an opening, carry it over unstable surfaces or bypass a stated safety restriction.
  5. Document the outcome. If delivery is refused or postponed, obtain the reason, the order status, the next contact and any reference number before the crew leaves.

Protect the appliance and the building

Forcing a unit through a tight opening can damage finishes, hinges, handles, flooring, walls or the appliance itself. Even when a measurement appears to work, the crew needs room to grip and control the load. Cover floors only with materials accepted by the provider; slippery coverings can create a hazard. Keep the route dry, well lit and free of loose cords. Do not disconnect gas, water or electrical services merely to create space unless a qualified professional has been assigned to do so.

Common scenarios and the appropriate response

The appliance is one inch wider than the doorway

Recheck whether you measured the clear opening or the door slab, and confirm whether the appliance dimensions include packaging. Then call the provider about approved door or handle removal. If no permitted change creates enough clearance, request a narrower model before delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The front door is wide enough, but a hallway turn is not

Measure the turning area, not just the hallway’s straight width. Tell the provider the exact corner and ask whether its crew has a stated limit for that turn. A model with a smaller depth or different orientation may be the practical replacement.

The appliance fits only if an interior door comes off

Ask whether the provider excludes interior-door removal. If it does, arrange qualified removal and refitting separately, or choose another model. Do not assume the delivery crew will alter the building.

The room is ready, but the crew cannot complete delivery

Request a written reason and ask whether the order is marked refused, cancelled, returned or rescheduled. Contact the seller the same day to protect any return window and to confirm charges before selecting a replacement or another delivery attempt.

A reusable pre-delivery checklist

  • Exact appliance model and delivery dimensions recorded.
  • Packaging dimensions confirmed or allowance made where they are unavailable.
  • Vehicle unloading point, exterior entrance, halls, stairs, turns and final doorway measured.
  • Smallest clear width and height identified.
  • Movable objects removed and floors, walls and corners protected appropriately.
  • Installation-space dimensions, ventilation, hookups and door swing checked against the model manual.
  • Provider contacted with the bottleneck measurement and obstruction details.
  • Door, handle or exterior-door removal policy, charges and advance-booking requirements confirmed.
  • Return, refusal, redelivery and replacement terms checked for the actual order and location.
  • Written confirmation or a reference number saved before delivery day.

The safest solution is the one confirmed before the appointment: an approved access change or an appliance whose delivered dimensions fit every part of the route. If neither is available, postpone the delivery and resolve the order terms with the seller rather than risking damage to the building, the appliance or the people moving it.
