Let the oven cool completely, then clean an accessible glass surface with mild soapy water and a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, scouring powder, steel wool, or a metal scraper. A scratch is different from removable grime, and manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal home-polishing method. If haze appears between panes, consult the exact model manual before removing anything. Stop using the oven and arrange qualified service for cracked, chipped, shattered, or loose glass.
Identify the problem before touching the door
“Cloudy” can describe several different conditions. The safe next step depends on where the mark is and whether the glass is physically damaged.

Cloudy film on the outside or inside surface
If the haze wipes off and is clearly on a surface you can reach without dismantling the door, treat it as a cleaning task. The oven must be cold first. Bosch recommends mild soapy water and a soft cloth for the door and window, while Fisher & Paykel specifies mild detergent and a soft, lint-free cloth for its glass.

Oven doors commonly have more than one pane. A cloudy patch that does not respond to careful surface cleaning may be between panes rather than on the exposed glass. Do not assume every door can be opened safely or that the panes can be removed by the owner. GE says its between-pane directions do not apply to every model, and specifically cautions against that work on ovens with a door camera or side-swing doors.

A visible scratch
A line that remains after gentle cleaning is not automatically residue. Manufacturer instructions warn that harsh cleaning methods can create scratches, but the reviewed guidance does not provide a general, approved home process for polishing an existing oven-door scratch. Avoid turning a cosmetic mark into a safety problem by experimenting with abrasive compounds or blades.
Chip, crack, shattered or loose glass
These are repair conditions, not cleaning problems. Wolf’s safety instruction is direct: “Discontinue use of the product if door glass is damaged.” Do not operate the affected oven until the manufacturer or a qualified repair service has assessed it.
Clean accessible glass safely
Use the following procedure only when the glass is intact and the surface you want to clean is accessible without removing the door or panes.

- Remove loose debris gently. Use the soft cloth dry or lightly dampened. Do not drag grit across the glass.
- Prepare mild soapy water. Use a small amount of ordinary mild detergent in water. Follow the owner’s manual if it specifies a different approved cleaner for your model.
- Wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth. Microfiber or another non-abrasive cloth is suitable for applying the permitted solution. Work across the glass without pressing hard.
- Remove residue and dry. Wipe with a clean damp cloth if needed, then dry with a soft cloth so streaks do not obscure the result.
- Recheck the mark only when dry. If the cloudy area remains in the same place, stop increasing the cleaning force. It may be between panes or may be a surface defect rather than dirt.
Do not use scouring pads, abrasive sponges, powdered cleaners, steel wool, or sharp metal tools. Bosch UK advises against using a glass scraper on oven glass. Fisher & Paykel warns that scratches to a special coating can result in cracking or shattering. Bosch also warns against flammable cleaners such as lighter fluid and WD-40. A product that makes ordinary window glass look polished is not automatically suitable for coated oven glass.

When the haze is between panes
Between-pane cleaning is model-specific. Some designs provide an owner-accessible route; others require door disassembly or service. The fact that one oven has removable trim does not establish that another oven is safe to open in the same way.
Check the model manual first
Find the full model number on the oven’s rating label or documentation and read the door-cleaning section. Bosch UK says to check the oven manual before door removal and to make sure the oven is cold. Follow only instructions written for that exact design, including any warnings about hinges, clips, insulation, wiring, cameras, or side-swing mechanisms.
Know when general instructions do not apply
GE notes that many models can be cleaned between panes, but its general instructions are not universal. It advises against inter-pane cleaning on models with a door camera or side-swing doors and recommends service when the published directions do not fit the appliance. Treat a missing or ambiguous procedure as a reason to stop, not as permission to improvise.
If the manual permits owner access
Read the complete sequence before beginning and photograph each part’s position. Work only with a cold oven on a stable surface, protect the glass from contact with hard objects, and keep fasteners and spacers in order. If any step requires force, the glass will not release as described, or you discover a different door construction, reassemble what you can and arrange service. There is no universal door-removal or pane-removal method that applies across brands.

What to do about a scratch
First rule out residue without abrading the glass
Use the cool-oven, mild-soap and soft-cloth process once. If the mark remains, do not switch to a razor, scouring pad, polishing powder, abrasive paste, or aggressive rubbing. The official guidance reviewed here warns against methods that scratch glass but does not endorse a general household compound for reversing a scratch.
Assess the scratch without creating a new defect
With the door cool and clean, inspect the line under ordinary light. A superficial mark may be cosmetic, but the sources do not define a reliable depth threshold that owners can measure at home. If the line catches a fingernail, branches, reaches an edge, or is accompanied by a chip, treat it as a reason to contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician rather than testing it with more tools.
Ask the manufacturer what repair is appropriate
Have the model and serial information ready and describe whether the mark is on the inner, outer, or between-pane surface. The manufacturer can determine whether the affected pane is separately replaceable and whether continued use is acceptable for that model. Do not promise yourself that a scratch can be polished away when no model-independent repair method has been established.
If the glass is cracked, chipped, shattered or loose
Stop using the oven. Do not run another cooking cycle to “see whether it holds,” and do not press on the door, tighten random screws, or tape over a crack as a permanent fix. Keep people away from loose fragments and follow the appliance manual’s safety instructions while arranging service.

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service and report the exact condition: crack, chip, shattered pane, loose pane, or damaged frame. Wolf specifically directs owners to discontinue use when door glass is damaged. The repair professional can determine whether the complete door, an inner pane, an outer pane, or associated hardware must be replaced.

Replacement glass is model-specific
Oven-door panes differ in dimensions, coatings, mounting points and heat-resistant construction. A pane that looks similar may not fit or may not be suitable for that door. Confirm compatibility using the complete model information before buying any part.
GE recommends service for inner oven-door glass replacement because the work entails substantial disassembly. That warning illustrates why a replacement part is not automatically a simple do-it-yourself repair. If the manual does not provide a clear owner procedure for your exact oven, have a qualified technician perform the work.

Troubleshooting after cleaning
The glass still looks cloudy
Do not increase pressure or move to a harsher chemical. Confirm that the oven was cold, the cloth was clean and the solution was mild. If the patch remains sharply located, it may be between panes or a change in the glass or coating. Return to the manual and contact service if the door must be opened to investigate.
The mark looks like a scratch after the door dries
Leave it alone rather than testing it with a blade or abrasive. Record which pane carries the mark and whether there is any chip or crack. Send that description and the model number to the manufacturer for guidance.
The door feels loose or the glass moves
Do not continue operating the oven. Loose glass is physical damage even if no crack is visible. Arrange an inspection and avoid disassembling hinges or retaining parts unless the exact manual expressly directs you to do so.

Use the appliance’s rating label, purchase documents or original manual to identify the model. If the instructions remain unavailable or do not match the door, choose qualified service instead of a generic online procedure.
Preventing new scratches and haze
- Clean only after the oven and door are fully cool.
- Keep abrasive pads, steel wool, scouring products and metal scrapers away from the glass.

For ordinary cloudiness on an intact, accessible pane, a cold oven, mild soapy water and a soft cloth are the appropriate first step. Persistent haze may be between panes and requires model-specific instructions. Scratches should not be attacked with abrasives or scrapers because no universal home-polishing repair is established. Any cracked, chipped, shattered or loose glass requires the oven to remain out of use until the manufacturer or a qualified repair service has assessed it.
