Before entering a temporary bridge, diversion or roadworks route, make four checks in order: read every current sign, confirm that your vehicle and load meet the displayed height, weight, width, length and vehicle-class limits, identify the marked detour and correct lane, then allow for temporary speeds, queues, debris and changed road alignment. Official signs and the responsible road authority’s current instructions take priority over a familiar route or a sat-nav suggestion.
The detailed rules below draw mainly on UK Department for Transport guidance. Sign designs and legal requirements vary by country; the Queensland example is included to show why you must apply the rules where you are driving rather than assume one jurisdiction’s wording is universal.

Why a temporary route needs a fresh decision
A temporary bridge or detour is not simply the usual road with a short interruption. Lane positions, carriageway widths, headroom, traffic priority, speed limits and the permitted vehicle types can change while work is under way. A route that was suitable for a car yesterday may not suit a high van, trailer, abnormal load or loaded construction vehicle today.
Roadworks barriers, cones and temporary signs define the route that remains open. A barrier or line of cones marks an area closed to traffic; do not cross it to save distance or to follow the road’s former alignment. Temporary signs can also impose a restriction that is different from the permanent sign at the same location.

The UK Highway Code’s Rule 288 gives the right starting point: “When the ‘Road Works Ahead’ sign is displayed, take extra care and look for additional signs providing more specific instructions.” Treat that instruction as a prompt to slow your planning down before you reach the bridge or diversion, not as permission to continue on autopilot.
Read every sign before committing to the route
Scan signs in sequence and look beyond the first warning board. The important restriction may be on a smaller plate, at a lane split or immediately before the temporary bridge. If traffic is moving quickly, reduce speed early enough to read the signs without braking sharply.

| Information shown | What to verify | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Roadworks or temporary-route warning | Whether the normal carriageway, lane or bridge is still open | Expect further instructions and be ready to follow a signed diversion |
| Vehicle-class restriction | Whether your vehicle category, trailer combination or site vehicle is excluded | Do not enter if your class is prohibited; use the indicated alternative |
| Height or headroom limit | The maximum safe height and whether it applies to the temporary alignment | Compare the limit with the complete vehicle and load height before proceeding |
| Weight or bridge-load limit | The displayed maximum and the weight that the restriction applies to | Keep out if the vehicle or combination exceeds the stated limit |
| Width or length limit | Whether the available lane and turning path suit your vehicle and trailer | Take the signed route for vehicles that are too wide or long |
| Detour arrow, lane board or road closure | Which lane to take and where the diversion starts | Move into position early, before cones or queues remove your options |
| Temporary speed limit | The lower limit in force through the works | Obey it from the sign onward, including on the temporary bridge |
UK low-bridge guidance explains that warning signs show maximum safe headroom, and that signs may provide an alternative route. Roadworks signing can add a temporary height restriction even where the permanent road layout has not changed. The number on the sign is the limit for that signed location; it is not an invitation to estimate how much additional clearance might be available.
Check the vehicle and the entire load
Height
Use the actual travelling height, not the unladen figure in a handbook. Include roof equipment, lifting gear, beacons, air-conditioning units, racking, raised bodies, plant attachments and anything carried on a trailer. A load that settles, shifts or is secured at a different height can change the clearance you need. If the measured or documented height is close to the sign’s limit, choose the alternative route rather than rely on a visual guess.
Weight
Check the relevant permitted gross weight and axle or combination limits for the vehicle and load, then compare them with any bridge-load restriction shown on the route. The restriction may apply to the complete vehicle, a vehicle-and-trailer combination or a particular class. Keep the paperwork and current loading information available so the driver is not relying on an old estimate.

Width, length and manoeuvrability
Temporary lanes can be narrower than the permanent carriageway and may include tight bends, shifted kerbs or a single-file crossing. Confirm the vehicle’s widest point, trailer length and turning requirement, including mirrors and any overhanging load. A detour sign for long or heavy vehicles is an instruction to take that route, not a suggestion to attempt the bridge slowly.
Vehicle class and special loads
Look for restrictions aimed at goods vehicles, buses, motorcycles, cycles, agricultural vehicles or vehicles carrying particular loads. If your movement needs an abnormal-load approval, escort or road-authority permission, a temporary bridge sign does not replace those requirements. Resolve the conflict with the responsible authority before departure.
Choose the signed detour and get into lane early
The Highway Code says to use mirrors and move into the correct lane in good time. Read the arrows and lane boards far enough in advance to make one deliberate move; late crossing of cones or a last-second turn creates risk for drivers beside and behind you.
Once in the works, follow the marked alignment rather than the old centre line, worn tyre tracks or a route that appears shorter. Keep within the cones and temporary barriers, obey stop/go signals or a marshal, and give priority exactly as shown. If the detour sends you away from the bridge, remain on that signed route until a lawful sign returns you to the main road.
Do not change lanes to pass queued traffic in roadworks. A queue may be protecting a merge, a narrow bridge or a hidden obstruction. A temporary lane can end abruptly, and a vehicle that passes the queue may reach a closed section with no safe turning space.

Adjust speed, spacing and observation through the works
Rule 288 requires drivers not to exceed a temporary maximum speed limit and to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Use more space than you would on an unobstructed road when visibility is reduced, the surface changes or traffic is stopping at a single-lane crossing. The correct distance depends on speed, weather, surface and vehicle mass; leave enough room to stop without entering the closed area.
Look for grit, mud, loose aggregate, standing water, steel plates and abrupt surface transitions. The Highway Code specifically warns that cyclists and motorcyclists can skid on grit, mud or other debris at roadworks. Avoid sudden steering, braking or acceleration, and expect vulnerable road users to need extra room around cones and temporary barriers.
At a temporary bridge, keep a steady line and do not stop on the structure unless traffic control requires it. Follow any alternating-flow signal, give way arrangement or convoy instruction. If the surface, alignment or visibility makes the instruction unclear, stop only where directed or where you can do so safely without blocking the live lane, then seek clarification.
Do not let a sat-nav override a closure
A navigation device may retain the normal road geometry after a closure, or it may direct you toward a restriction that was installed after its map data was collected. Use it for general orientation only. Current road signs, barriers, traffic-control signals and route instructions are the controlling information at the scene.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the signed diversion differs from the device, follow the diversion. Do not drive around a barrier, enter a lane marked closed or cross a temporary bridge after a sign has directed your vehicle class elsewhere. When the route is safe and legal, stop in a permitted place before changing the destination or asking a passenger to reprogramme the device.

What to do when signs are missing, unclear or inconsistent
- Reduce speed and create space. Keep the vehicle in the lane that is clearly open and avoid an abrupt manoeuvre.
- Check the whole approach. A restriction or diversion board may be positioned before the point where the conflict becomes obvious.
- Do not make an engineering judgement. You cannot establish a temporary bridge’s structural capacity by looking at it, and you should not treat an apparently empty route as proof that your load is permitted.
- Ask the responsible road authority. Contact the authority named on the works notice or its current road-closure service for the route. Give the exact location, vehicle dimensions, weight and load type, and ask which route is authorised.
- Report an immediate hazard. If a barrier has moved, a sign is damaged or traffic is being directed into a dangerous conflict, use the local authority’s emergency or road-incident channel and follow instructions from police, traffic officers or marshals on site.
Jurisdiction matters: UK rules and a Queensland example
The main instructions in this article reflect UK Department for Transport material, including Highway Code Rule 288 and UK low-bridge sign guidance. They are useful for understanding the decision process, but they do not replace the law where you are driving.
Queensland guidance illustrates the difference. There, a driver must not pass a bridge-load-limit sign when the vehicle exceeds the displayed weight, and a detour sign may direct vehicles that are too long or heavy to another route. That is a Queensland rule example, not a universal statement of law. Other countries and regions can use different sign formats, definitions and enforcement rules.
Before a cross-border or unfamiliar trip, check the current instructions from the road authority for each jurisdiction on the route. Live restrictions and detours are route- and date-specific; a permanent map, old project notice or previous journey cannot confirm that today’s alignment is open.

Complete this check before the vehicle leaves the yard or a safe stopping place:
- Record the vehicle, trailer and loaded dimensions, including the highest and widest points.
- Confirm the relevant gross, axle and combination weights and retain the current loading information.
- Review the road authority’s current closure and diversion instructions for the planned route.
- Brief the driver on the vehicle-class, height, weight, width, length and speed restrictions shown for the temporary route.
- Identify where the driver must choose the marked detour and where lane changes need to be completed early.
- Allow additional time for queues, alternating traffic, lower speeds and a route that is longer than the normal journey.
- Agree what to do if a sign is absent or contradictory: remain clear of the restriction and contact the responsible authority rather than improvise.
This process does not certify a bridge or substitute for a permit. It ensures that the route decision is based on the current signs, the actual vehicle and load, and the instructions of the authority controlling the works. The UK guidance cited here was current on 13 October 2026; check for later local notices before each trip.
