What to Check Before Choosing a Temporary Route During Bridge Construction

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before taking a bridge-construction detour, confirm the responsible transportation agency’s latest closure notice and signed route, then test whether that route fits your vehicle, trip, and the conditions you will face at the time of travel. A signed detour directs traffic, but it does not prove that every car, truck, bus, bicycle, or pedestrian can use every segment safely.

Start with the current official closure information

Construction stages can change the usable route without changing the project name. Check the transportation agency responsible for the bridge immediately before departure and record the closure dates, daily hours, phase of work, and any revised detour. Look for advance notices, project updates, field signs, and changeable-message signs. FHWA identifies these methods as the ways agencies communicate work-zone conditions, and a route that worked during one stage may be unsuitable during the next.

Use navigation software or a traffic service only as supplementary information. An app may not include a newly posted weight limit, a temporary turn restriction, a lane shift, or a detour that applies only during certain hours. If the agency notice, a changeable-message sign, and an app disagree, follow the current official instruction and posted signs, and allow time to stop safely and reassess.

Define the vehicle and the trip before judging a route

Route suitability depends on what is travelling and where it must go. Write down the vehicle type, dimensions, operating weight, load, and destination before comparing alternatives. A passenger car, school bus, delivery truck, tractor-trailer, emergency vehicle, and hazardous-material load can face different restrictions on the same road.

Vehicle details that change the decision

  • Overall height, including equipment, trailers, roof loads, and raised components.
  • Width and length, including mirrors, escorts, and any attached trailer.
  • Actual operating weight and axle loads, not just the vehicle’s empty weight.
  • Turning radius and the ability to remain within the available lane at intersections.
  • Hazardous-material classification or other permit conditions that require a designated route.

Also identify time-sensitive needs: a hospital appointment, a scheduled delivery, a shift change, a school run, or an emergency response. The shortest map distance may be a poor choice if it has severe queueing, multiple signalized intersections, or no reliable access to the destination.

Screen clearances, limits, geometry, and grades

FHWA guidance calls for checking height, weight, width, and turning restrictions before opening or using an alternate route. Verify each constraint against the vehicle and load rather than assuming that a route signed for general traffic accommodates larger vehicles.

Clearance and load checks

  • Confirm every bridge, culvert, tunnel, overhead sign, utility crossing, and temporary structure’s posted height clearance.
  • Check posted gross-weight and axle-load limits, including restrictions that apply only to the temporary route.
  • Measure lane and shoulder width where construction barriers, cones, or parked equipment narrow the roadway.
  • Look for restrictions on trailers, buses, oversized loads, or hazardous materials.

Turning and vertical alignment

Study the tightest corner, roundabout, ramp, and temporary alignment, not just the straight sections. A route can have adequate road width but still fail at an unprotected left turn, a narrow intersection, or a turn blocked by barriers. Grades matter for heavy vehicles, buses, bicycles, and vehicles towing trailers: a steep climb can reduce speed, while a descent can increase braking demand. FHWA lists turning restrictions and grades among the factors to examine.

Evaluate how the alternate road will operate

Distance alone does not predict a practical detour. Examine pavement condition, lane count, capacity, traffic control, and expected delay for the departure time. FHWA’s alternate-route factors include travel time, congestion, the number of lanes, signals, stop signs, and unprotected turns.

Road condition and capacity

Check whether pavement is intact, narrowed, unpaved, or affected by construction vehicles. A two-lane road may carry normal local traffic but become overloaded when a bridge closure diverts regional traffic. Compare the road’s available lanes with the likely demand and note whether there is a safe place to pull over if traffic stops.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

Intersections and control

Count major signals and stop signs and identify intersections without protected turn phases. More control points create more opportunities for delay and conflicts. Temporary signal timing, flaggers, lane shifts, and queue spillback can make a route’s travel time vary sharply between morning, midday, and evening.

Time-of-day and forecast conditions

Check expected traffic for the exact departure window. School arrival and dismissal, hospital shift changes, commuter peaks, seasonal events, and weather can consume spare capacity. If the agency provides estimated delays or recommends a travel period, use that information rather than relying on a normal-day travel time.

Account for emergency services, transit, and people outside cars

A driving detour is not automatically a safe passage for everyone affected by the closure. Work-zone planning considers emergency services, commercial vehicles, transit, pedestrians, cyclists, people with disabilities, homes, and businesses.

Emergency and public-service access

Determine whether ambulances, fire apparatus, police vehicles, maintenance crews, and utility workers can reach properties on both sides of the bridge. A barrier that is acceptable for ordinary traffic may delay emergency response. If access is controlled, identify the agency or project contact responsible for emergency coordination.

Transit and school movement

Check whether bus routes, stops, layover areas, and school transportation have been relocated. A detour that works for private cars may prevent a bus from making a safe turn or may leave passengers without an accessible boarding area. Confirm stop locations and allow for longer dwell times where buses merge through construction traffic.

Walking, cycling, and accessibility

Inspect the alternate route for a continuous sidewalk or separated path, safe crossings, lighting, curb ramps, detectable warnings, and reasonable grades. Do not direct pedestrians or cyclists onto a high-speed shoulder simply because motor vehicles can use the road. A temporary crossing must remain usable for people with disabilities, and a closure of the bridge may require a separate non-motorized route.

Homes and businesses

Check driveway access, deliveries, waste collection, customer parking, and access to schools, hospitals, fuel, food, and rest areas. FHWA includes these destination and service considerations in alternate-route planning. A route that keeps through traffic moving can still isolate a neighborhood or block a business entrance.

Look for disruptions near the detour

Search the agency’s project notices for other construction, utility work, lane closures, special events, and restrictions on nearby roads. A detour can be technically open but functionally unusable when another project removes a lane or when an event closes an intersection. Pay particular attention to roads serving hospitals and schools, where a small delay or blocked approach can have consequences beyond ordinary congestion.

Compare two alternatives using the same criteria

When two routes appear possible, compare them against your vehicle and trip rather than selecting the one with the shorter distance. Record the evidence at the same time and for the same travel period.

Criterion Questions to answer Decision signal
Vehicle compatibility Are height, width, weight, axle, turning, grade, and hazardous-material requirements satisfied? Any failed limit eliminates the route.
Safety and control How many lanes, signals, stop signs, unprotected turns, merges, and work-zone shifts are present? Prefer the route with fewer severe conflict points when capacity is adequate.
Current operation What are the agency’s current delay estimates, queues, and phase-specific restrictions? Use current conditions, not an old map or normal-day travel time.
Road condition Are pavement, shoulders, barriers, and drainage suitable for the vehicle? Reject a route that cannot safely support the load or a breakdown.
Access Can emergency services, transit, pedestrians, cyclists, residents, and businesses reach their destinations? Choose the option that preserves required access, even if it is longer.
Services and resilience Are fuel, food, rest areas, hospitals, and alternate exits available if traffic stops? For long or commercial trips, value recovery options over a small distance saving.

Do not label one alternative universally best without project-specific evidence. The appropriate choice changes with vehicle dimensions, destination, departure time, and the needs of other road users.

Use this departure-day procedure

  1. Open the responsible agency’s latest project notice. Confirm the bridge closure, dates, hours, construction phase, official detour, and any special vehicle instructions.
  2. Match the notice to field conditions. Read advance signs and changeable-message signs before committing to a turn. If signs show a newer instruction, follow the signed route and stop only where it is safe to do so.
  3. Check every controlling restriction. Compare your vehicle’s measured height, width, weight, axle loads, turning needs, and load classification with posted limits and permits.
  4. Trace the complete route. Inspect the first turn, narrowest segment, steepest grade, final approach, and access to the destination. Include the return route if the trip requires it.
  5. Review traffic and nearby disruptions. Check expected congestion, school or hospital activity, events, weather, and other construction for the departure period.
  6. Verify non-driving access. Confirm sidewalks, crossings, bicycle facilities, transit stops, accessible paths, emergency access, and business or residential driveways where relevant.
  7. Set a stop-and-reassess rule. If a restriction, queue, barrier, or unsafe condition differs from the notice, do not improvise around it. Pull over safely, contact the responsible agency when appropriate, and use the next official instruction.

Special checks for common travelers

Trucks, buses, and trailers

Use the vehicle’s actual loaded dimensions and axle weights. Inspect cornering space, grades, overhead clearances, lane narrowing, and locations where a long vehicle may block opposing traffic while turning. A route suitable for cars can be unsuitable for a truck even when both are shown by the same navigation map.

Hazardous-material movements

Confirm whether the agency or local authority requires a designated hazardous-material route, escort, time window, or permit. Do not substitute a general detour for a route-specific instruction.

Pedestrians and cyclists

Plan a continuous, protected path separately from the motor-vehicle detour. Verify crossings and accessibility at each end; a route that merely avoids the closed bridge but ends at a barrier is not a usable alternative.

Residents and businesses

Check how the closure affects driveway access, deliveries, customer circulation, and emergency response. Ask the project contact about temporary access arrangements rather than moving barriers or entering a closed work area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What full closure can—and cannot—tell you

FHWA says a full closure can improve safety or shorten construction duration in suitable situations, but it is not appropriate for every project. The outcome depends on the available detour, traffic demand, local access, and construction method.

  • Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete
  • Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
  • Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking

Two FHWA case examples show why those results should not be generalized. For the 15-mile I-385 South Carolina project, a closure implemented in January 2010 allowed rehabilitation to finish in less than eight months instead of an estimated three years with lanes kept open and saved more than $34 million. For a two-mile segment of Minnesota Highway 36 in 2007, analysis projected a 70% reduction in the duration of traffic impacts under full closure compared with partial closure. In that same project’s public survey, respondents were split 50/50 between full and partial closure. These are project-specific figures, not predictions for another bridge.

Understand the status of detour signs and standards

The FHWA-hosted 2009 Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Chapter 6B, states: “Before any new detour or temporary route is opened to traffic, all necessary signs shall be in place.” That wording comes from an older edition. Confirm the current MUTCD edition and the state or local adoption that governs the project before treating it as the controlling legal standard.

Signs are essential instructions, but they do not replace a vehicle-fit check. Continue to obey posted clearance, weight, width, turn, and lane-control information even when a route was previously approved or appears in a navigation database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a proposed route fails the check

  • Clearance or weight failure: Stop before the restricted segment and obtain the agency’s designated route; never attempt to pass under, over, or around a limit.
  • Unexpected queue: Remain on the official route unless a new signed instruction provides another option. An unplanned shortcut may lack the capacity or turning space for diverted traffic.
  • Missing pedestrian or bicycle passage: Use the project’s accessible non-motorized route or contact the agency for a safe alternative; do not enter the vehicle detour lane on foot or by bicycle without protection.
  • Blocked destination access: Coordinate with the project or property contact for delivery, resident, or emergency access rather than moving cones or barriers.
  • Conflicting information: Treat the latest agency notice and field signs as authoritative, document the location and time of the conflict, and report it to the responsible transportation agency.

A temporary route is ready for your trip only when its official status, physical limits, operating conditions, and access arrangements all match the vehicle and the people who must use it. If any one of those checks fails, wait for a confirmed instruction or select an agency-designated alternative rather than improvising through the work zone.
