Confirm the unit’s dimensions and delivery route, structural support, electrical and plumbing capacity, ventilation, drainage, service clearances, and the complete installed cost. A sauna and a steam shower solve different problems: a sauna is a heated cabin or room, while a steam shower depends on a vapor-tight, waterproof enclosure and a correctly sized, serviceable generator. The current installation manual for the exact model, local building rules, and qualified trades should control the final design.
Decide which project fits your home
The first decision is not which brand or finish to buy. It is whether your room and your intended use suit dry sauna heat or steam. Choosing the wrong project can force expensive rebuilding before the equipment can operate safely.

| Project | What creates the experience | Primary construction concern | Utilities and upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional sauna | Heater warms air and stones in a cabin or room | Stable cabin, heater clearances, fresh air, and heat-resistant construction | Electrical supply, specified stones, wood care, and post-use drying |
| Infrared sauna | Infrared emitters warm occupants directly | Cabin footprint, emitter installation, electrical requirements, and surrounding-room conditions | Model-specific circuit and controls; keep the cabin dry and follow care instructions |
| Steam shower | Generator sends steam into a fully enclosed shower | Vapor control, waterproofing, sealed door, ceiling, floor drain, and generator access | Electrical service, water, steam line, drain, controls, ventilation, and drying after use |
A sauna generally needs a suitable dry, level base and a room that can receive heat and humidity without damage. A steam shower is a bathroom enclosure and mechanical installation at the same time. A generator kit cannot turn an ordinary, leaky shower into a steam room.
When a sauna is the better fit
Choose a sauna when you want a separate heated cabin or room, can provide the required heater clearances and fresh-air provisions, and prefer a dry-heat routine. Traditional heaters also require the correct stones and loading method. Infrared cabins have different electrical and installation requirements, so do not assume that an infrared model can use the circuit or clearances of a traditional heater.

When a steam shower is the better fit
Choose a steam shower when you want steam in the shower itself and are prepared to build or upgrade the enclosure. The ceiling, walls, floor, door, controls, waterproofing, drainage, and generator location all affect whether the system works. If the existing shower cannot be enclosed and waterproofed properly, a new cabin or a rebuilt shower may be more practical than a retrofit.
Measure the room and the entire delivery route
Do not select a model from the advertised interior dimensions alone. Record the available floor area, finished ceiling height, door swing, and the space required to open service panels and maintain every clearance in the manual. Include room for assembly if the unit arrives in panels, and account for the thickness of wall finishes, trim, insulation, and a shower door.
Make a delivery-path survey
Measure every part of the route from the delivery vehicle to the installation point:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Property gates, exterior steps, ramps, and narrow side passages.
- Entry doors, threshold heights, hallways, stairwells, landings, and turns.
- Ceiling obstructions, low beams, tight corners, and lift or hoist access.
- The width and height of the package, not just the assembled product.
- Whether the shipment is curbside, palletized, assembled, or delivered as panels.
Ask the seller or installer for package dimensions, weight, handling requirements, and the point at which responsibility transfers. A unit that fits the finished room may still be impossible to move through a stair turn. Resolve that before paying a deposit.
Prepare the base and surrounding area
For an outdoor sauna, provide a level, stable base designed for the installed load. Check drainage so rainwater cannot collect beneath the cabin, and leave access for maintenance. For an indoor sauna, confirm that the floor is level, dry, and capable of supporting the cabin and occupants. Keep sauna wood away from permanent water contact and excessive external humidity as directed by the manufacturer. Plan how the room around the sauna will handle heat and moisture.
Verify electrical capacity before ordering
Electrical requirements are model-specific. Have a qualified electrician compare the exact product manual with your service panel, available capacity, voltage, circuit, wiring, disconnect or protection requirements, and the route to the equipment. A circuit example shown by a retailer for one generator or heater is not a universal rule.

Ask the electrician to identify where the connection will be made, how the cable will be protected, and whether the installation requires a dedicated circuit or additional equipment. Confirm that the proposed location remains accessible after walls, benches, or cabinets are finished. Never size a circuit from a generic online table or from the category name “sauna heater.”
Electrical questions to put in writing
- What voltage, current, phase, and circuit protection does this exact model require?
- Is the existing panel large enough, or is an upgrade needed?
- Where will the disconnect, controller, and service access be located?
- Does the local authority require permits or inspection?
- Who supplies and tests the final connection?
Plan plumbing, drainage, and ventilation as one system
Steam and sauna installations both affect moisture, but in different ways. A steam shower needs a water supply, steam line, generator drain or service provisions, shower drainage, and controls. A sauna needs fresh-air provisions and room ventilation appropriate to the heater and cabin. In either case, ask how the bathroom or room will dry after use.
Ventilation for a sauna
Check the cabin and heater manuals for fresh-air intake, exhaust location, airflow, and clearances. The Auroom installation guidance calls for adequate room ventilation and a fresh-air supply to the sauna and directs installers to the heater’s own instructions for heater installation. Do not block vents with insulation, benches, storage, or decorative panels. Confirm that the surrounding room can dissipate heat and humidity without damaging finishes.
Ventilation and drying for a steam shower
A steam enclosure should contain vapor during a session, but the bathroom still needs a way to dry afterward. Discuss exhaust-fan location, run time, door-opening practice, and makeup air with the designer and installer. The goal is to remove residual moisture without placing an exhaust grille where it immediately pulls steam out of the enclosure during operation.
Sauna-specific checks
Choose the heat type from the actual use case
Traditional and infrared cabins differ in heat, controls, electrical demand, maintenance, and installation details. Decide how many people will use the sauna, how often, and whether you want a heater-and-stone experience or direct radiant heat. Then compare the dimensions, capacity, controls, and manual for the exact model. Category-level assumptions are not a substitute for those documents.

Confirm heater clearances and protection
Read the heater manual before framing or placing benches. Verify side, rear, top, and front clearances, required guards, mounting height, and service access. Make sure the heater cannot be contacted accidentally and that combustible materials are outside the stated zones. If the cabin is prefabricated, confirm that its supplied layout matches the heater instructions rather than assuming every heater fits every cabin.

Use the specified stones and loading method
Traditional heaters depend on the right stones and airflow through the stone compartment. The Auroom manual states, “Using the heater without the stones is not allowed.” Buy only the type and quantity specified for the heater, inspect stones for damage, and load them exactly as instructed. Incorrect loading can restrict airflow, damage the heater, or create an unsafe surface temperature.
Plan wood care and moisture control
Wipe benches and other surfaces regularly, remove standing water from wood, and follow the manufacturer’s schedule for inspection and care. Keep water from pooling beneath the cabin and prevent the exterior from remaining in excessive humidity. Ask who is responsible for replacing damaged boards, inspecting fasteners, and servicing the heater after the warranty period.
Review warranty and service terms
Obtain the current warranty, installation manual, technical specifications, and service procedure before purchase. Check coverage length, exclusions for self-installation or improper ventilation, who pays travel and labor, and where replacement parts are sourced. A warranty that requires authorized installation can change the project cost and contractor selection.
Steam-shower-specific checks
Build a genuinely enclosed steam room
The enclosure must contain vapor, not merely shower spray. A manufacturer installation manual for steam systems states: “Steam room must be completely enclosed, with full walls, door, floor and ceiling.” Treat that as a design principle and then follow the current manual for the selected generator. Plan water-resistant, non-corrosive wall and ceiling surfaces, a door with an effective seal, a waterproofed floor, and a floor drain.
Review every penetration for the steam head, controls, lights, shower fittings, and door hardware. Vapor can travel through small gaps and condense inside assemblies that were designed only for ordinary shower use. Your waterproofing and enclosure contractor should specify compatible membranes, sealants, substrates, and transitions rather than relying on surface caulk alone.
Size the generator to the enclosure
Generator output depends on the enclosure volume and construction details, not simply on the number of shower heads. Use the manufacturer’s sizing method and include ceiling height, glass area, material type, exterior walls, and other factors listed in the manual. An undersized generator may struggle to reach the intended condition; an oversized one can increase cost and may not suit the controls or electrical service.

Locate the generator where it can be serviced
Place the generator in a dry, accessible location with the clearances required for plumbing, electrical work, and maintenance. Do not bury it permanently behind tile or a fixed cabinet. Confirm the maximum distance and routing for the steam line, provide access to valves and drains, and protect the unit from freezing or excessive heat as specified by the manual.

Have licensed trades verify the exact requirements for electrical service, cold-water supply, steam piping, drain connections, controls, and any filtration or shutoff equipment. A stated 240-volt circuit, water-pressure range, or drain size on a retailer page applies to the listed units, not to every generator. Record the model number on the plans so a future replacement will not be assumed to fit.
Control condensation and drainage
Provide positive drainage and slope surfaces so water does not remain on the floor or ceiling. The cited steam installation guidance requires a floor drain and notes that a sloped ceiling helps prevent condensate from dripping onto occupants. Coordinate ceiling slope, light locations, glass, door sweep, and the shower pan before waterproofing begins.
Assess an existing-shower conversion honestly
Conversion is possible only when the existing construction can be upgraded to a complete steam enclosure. Inspect framing, ceiling height, waterproofing, floor slope, drain condition, door fit, glass, wall finishes, and access for a generator and steam line. Price the demolition, membrane replacement, ceiling work, electrical changes, and ventilation before buying a kit. If the enclosure must be rebuilt, compare the cost and disruption with a new steam-ready shower.
How to evaluate an existing shower conversion
- Document the existing enclosure. Photograph walls, ceiling, door, floor, drain, niches, lights, and access panels. Record dimensions and identify any open gaps.
- Verify the structure. Confirm that framing can support new finishes, a sloped ceiling, controls, and required backing. Locate plumbing and wiring before cutting.
- Test the water-management system. Have the installer assess the shower pan, waterproofing transitions, drain, and penetrations. Do not assume intact tile proves a steam-rated membrane.
- Design the generator route. Select a serviceable location, confirm electrical capacity, and plan water, drain, steam-line, and control routes.
- Obtain a written scope. Separate demolition, waterproofing, enclosure work, utilities, equipment, controls, commissioning, and final sealing so omissions are visible.
- Only then select the generator. Size it from the finished enclosure and the current manual, not from the old shower’s dimensions alone.
Compare shortlisted products on the same planning axes
A useful comparison is about installation risk and long-term serviceability, not just finishes or advertised heat output. Use one worksheet for every model.

Common buying mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Fix before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring only the finished room | The package or assembly path will not fit | Measure every doorway, turn, stair, and service opening; obtain package dimensions |
| Buying a generator for an ordinary shower | Vapor escapes and concealed assemblies can stay wet | Design a complete enclosed, waterproof steam room first |
| Using a generic circuit estimate | The panel or wiring may not meet the actual model requirement | Use the exact manual and a qualified electrician |
| Hiding the generator or service panel | Routine maintenance requires demolition | Reserve permanent, code-compliant access |
| Ignoring ventilation | Heat and moisture damage the room or cause poor operation | Design fresh-air, exhaust, and post-use drying paths |
| Skipping stones or loading them incorrectly | Airflow and heater operation are compromised | Use only specified stones and follow the loading diagram |
| Assuming a warranty covers installation | Improper work may void coverage | Read exclusions and document qualified installation |
| Comparing equipment prices alone | Trade and building work overwhelm the apparent saving | Compare complete, itemized installed scopes |
Use this pre-order checklist
- Exact model, manual, technical specifications, warranty, and service contact obtained.
- Finished footprint, ceiling height, clearances, and service zones drawn to scale.
- Complete delivery route measured, including package dimensions and handling plan.
- Base or floor verified level, stable, dry, and suitable for the load.
- Electrical capacity and connection approved by a qualified electrician.
- For steam: enclosure, waterproofing, vapor control, drain, generator location, steam line, and controls designed.
- For sauna: heater clearances, fresh-air supply, room ventilation, stones, guard, and wood-care plan confirmed.
- Ventilation and post-use drying plan agreed with the builder.
- Permits, inspections, and responsibilities assigned in writing.
- Itemized installed quote includes delivery, preparation, trades, labor, commissioning, and maintenance assumptions.
Questions to ask the installer
- Which current manual and revision are you using for the design?
- What must remain accessible after the walls and finishes are complete?
- What work is excluded from your price?
- How will you test electrical protection, leaks, drainage, controls, and ventilation?
- How will the room dry after use, and who is responsible if condensation appears?
- What maintenance can the homeowner perform, and what requires authorized service?
- What happens if the delivered package cannot pass the planned route?
Get the answers attached to the contract. Model changes, substitutions, and undocumented assumptions are common sources of cost overruns.
Plan commissioning and the first year of care
At handover, verify that the installer has tested the heater or generator, controls, water and drain connections, door seals, floor drainage, ventilation, and emergency shutoffs. Receive the manuals, wiring information, warranty registration instructions, maintenance schedule, and a list of service contacts.
After each sauna session, follow the ventilation and drying instructions, wipe benches, and remove standing water from wood. For a steam shower, run the bathroom exhaust and leave the enclosure able to dry as designed. Inspect seals, drains, stone condition, wood, and accessible connections at the intervals stated by the manufacturer. Early correction of a loose seal, blocked vent, or drain issue is less disruptive than repairing concealed moisture damage.
The practical buying decision
Buy only after the site, route, utilities, enclosure or cabin, service access, and installed budget have been documented for the exact model. A sauna purchase is ready when the heater, clearances, ventilation, base, stones, and care plan are resolved. A steam-shower purchase is ready when the enclosure can contain vapor, the generator is sized and accessible, utilities and drainage are designed, and the bathroom can dry afterward. If any of those conditions is uncertain, pause the order and obtain a revised design from qualified local trades.
