Before you buy a ticket, verify two separate risks: whether the work changes aircraft operations and whether it changes your route through the terminal or your ability to reach the airport. Check the airline’s exact flight, the airport operator’s construction and access notices, and—when traveling in the United States—the FAA’s current NOTAM information. A construction notice by itself does not prove that your particular flight will be delayed or canceled.
Why airport construction can affect a trip
Construction is not one uniform condition. A project may close or restrict a runway, taxiway, gate area, security checkpoint, roadway, rail connection, parking facility or terminal corridor. Each type of work creates a different risk for a traveler.

The FAA says on its Runway and Taxiway Construction page that “Runway construction projects present hazards to aircraft and air traffic control operations.” A changed runway or taxiway configuration can alter how aircraft arrive, depart and move on the ground. That may affect an airport’s operating capacity, but the existence of work alone does not establish an outcome for an individual passenger flight.
Terminal and access projects can create problems even when the airfield remains fully usable. A temporary entrance, security checkpoint, shuttle, parking lot or train route may add walking time or require a different drop-off plan. Airport-specific instructions are therefore as important as the airline’s flight status.

Check the airline’s exact flight before booking
Search the flight number and date, not only the route
Use the airline’s website or app to look up the exact flight number, travel date, origin, destination and connection points. A general route search can show that seats are being sold, but it does not tell you whether a particular departure has an operational notice, a schedule adjustment or a current disruption.
Record the scheduled departure and arrival times, each flight number, the operating carrier and the airports used for connections. If a codeshare is involved, identify which airline operates each segment and check the status with the airline responsible for that segment.
Ask what is known and what is not
The FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center advises travelers to check flight status with the airline. An airline can explain the status of your reservation and any options it is currently offering. It is the appropriate source for the passenger-specific question: “Is my booked flight operating as scheduled?”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not treat a normal booking display as a guarantee that construction will have no effect. Conditions can change, and a flight may still be subject to a later delay, gate change or cancellation. Conversely, a construction project can be active without affecting your particular flight.
Read the airport operator’s construction and traveler notices
Find the airport’s current project page
Go to the airport operator’s official website and look for pages labelled construction, capital projects, travel alerts, terminal updates, passenger information or getting to the airport. Check the page for the airport you will actually use, including connection airports. A notice for one airport does not establish that another airport has the same restrictions.

Look for four kinds of information:
- Passenger routing: closed entrances, relocated check-in areas, temporary security checkpoints, terminal shuttles, blocked corridors and changed gate routes.
- Ground access: road closures, lane shifts, altered rideshare pick-up areas, parking changes, bus diversions and rail or people-mover interruptions.
- Project timing: start and end dates, overnight work, weekend closures and the hours when a restriction is expected to be active.
- Required actions: arriving earlier, using a specified entrance, taking a shuttle, following temporary signs or asking airport staff for assistance.
Use the airport’s directions for the day you travel
Denver International Airport’s construction guidance illustrates the practical approach: “Check flydenver.com before you head to DEN,” follow signs and ask airport staff for help. That is Denver-specific advice, not a claim about conditions at every airport. Apply the same principle locally by checking the operator’s update shortly before leaving home and again if your ground-transport plan changes.
Save a screenshot or note the relevant instructions after you book. Construction pages can be updated, and a saved note helps you remember a temporary entrance or shuttle instruction without assuming the page will look identical later.
Understand FAA NOTAMs without overreading them
What a NOTAM tells you
The FAA defines a NOTAM as “a notice containing information essential to personnel concerned with flight operations but not known far enough in advance to be publicized by other means.” NOTAMs describe abnormal or temporary conditions in the National Airspace System. Examples include runway closures and changes that affect arrival or departure procedures.
For some airports, the Federal NOTAM System also provides airport-specific Closure/Restriction Notice Diagrams. These diagrams and notices are designed primarily for pilots, dispatchers, airport authorities and air-traffic managers. They can confirm that a restriction exists, but their abbreviations and operational detail may not explain what a ticketed passenger should do.
Use FAA information as a supplement
The FAA Command Center’s runway and equipment summary is not a complete list. The page directs readers to current NOTAMs for complete information. Treat a summary status page as a quick additional check, not as a substitute for the airport’s own passenger instructions or the airline’s flight-specific status.

When a technical notice is unclear, ask the airline or airport operator to translate it into a traveler consequence: Is my runway in use? Is my terminal open? Has the check-in location moved? Should I allow extra time for a shuttle or road detour? Do not infer that a NOTAM automatically means your flight will be canceled.

If you have more than one itinerary, compare the options against the same four questions. The sources do not establish that one itinerary is universally best; the right choice depends on the project, schedule and your tolerance for disruption.
| Decision factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Where the work is | Airfield (runway or taxiway), terminal, checkpoint, gate area, roadway, parking or transit connection | Airfield work can affect aircraft and air-traffic operations; terminal and access work can affect your journey inside or to the airport. |
| When it is active | Project dates, daily hours, overnight periods, weekend phases and your scheduled departure, arrival and connection times | A restriction that ends before your flight may pose a different risk from one active during your travel window. |
| Itinerary design | Nonstop versus connecting travel, connection airport, connection length and terminal changes | A connection adds another airport and another opportunity for a routing or access problem to affect the trip. |
| Your flexibility | Ability to travel on another date or time, work or event commitments, and the consequences of a missed connection | A traveler with no scheduling flexibility may value a different itinerary from someone who can move the trip. |
Nonstop and connecting flights
A nonstop itinerary uses one airport departure and one airport arrival. A connecting itinerary requires you to pass through an additional airport, so check construction notices for every airport in the itinerary—not just the origin and final destination.
For a connection, examine the scheduled interval between flights and the terminals involved. Construction may lengthen the walk, require a shuttle or change the route to security. The published connection time is not a promise that a construction-related transfer will be easy; decide whether the interval leaves room for the airport’s stated routing.
Timing against the work schedule
Match the project’s active hours to each part of your itinerary. Overnight runway work may not overlap a midday departure, while a road closure scheduled for the morning commute could affect your trip even if the aircraft operation is unchanged. If a notice gives only a broad date range and no reliable daily hours, treat the timing as uncertain and seek clarification from the airport or airline.

A booking-time verification procedure
- List every airport and segment. Write down the origin, destination, connection airports, flight numbers, operating carriers and scheduled times.
- Check each airline segment. Search the exact flight and date. Save the current status and read any schedule or operational message attached to the reservation.
- Check each airport operator. Review construction, passenger-impact, terminal-map and ground-access updates for the dates and times you will be there.
- Check FAA information when applicable. For U.S. airports, review current NOTAM information or closure/restriction diagrams if you need to understand an airfield restriction. Do not rely on a summary page as the complete record.
- Translate technical notices into actions. Identify whether you need a different entrance, more time, a shuttle, another parking option or assistance from airport staff.
- Compare alternatives. Apply the four decision factors—location, timing, itinerary design and flexibility—to each available flight.
- Save the plan. Keep the airline confirmation and the airport’s relevant instructions where you can find them on travel day.
Recheck after buying the ticket
Construction schedules, operating configurations and passenger routes are volatile. Recheck the airline’s exact flight and the airport’s current notices before leaving for the airport. A practical pattern is to check when you book, again as the travel date approaches, and once more on the day of departure; also check after receiving a schedule-change notification or learning that a project phase has changed.
On departure day, allow time for the airport’s stated detours, shuttles or relocated facilities. Follow temporary signs rather than an old memory of the terminal layout. If signs conflict or you cannot find the correct route, ask airport staff for help, as Denver’s traveler guidance recommends.
For a connection, check the next airport while you are still at the origin. A normal first flight does not eliminate a terminal or access issue at the connecting airport. Keep the airline’s notification and support channels available in case the operating status changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming construction means cancellation
A construction announcement describes work, not the outcome of every flight. Verify the individual flight with the airline before changing plans.
Checking only the airline
An airline status page may not describe a closed entrance, road diversion or temporary security route. Pair it with the airport operator’s passenger and access information.

Checking only a general FAA status page
The FAA states that its runway and equipment summary is incomplete and points readers to current NOTAMs for full information. Use the appropriate FAA notices for U.S. aviation information, then obtain a traveler-focused explanation from the airline or airport when needed.
Applying one airport’s advice to another
Denver’s instructions are specific to DEN. Other airports may use different terminals, shuttles, signs and access arrangements. Read the operator’s own current notice for each airport in your itinerary.
Assuming ticket remedies are universal
Change, refund and rebooking terms depend on the carrier and itinerary. The construction and NOTAM guidance does not establish a construction-specific passenger entitlement or a universal delay forecast. Read the conditions attached to your booking and ask the airline what applies to your reservation if the flight changes.

Book when you can identify the active project, understand its timing, know how to reach and navigate the airport, and have verified the exact flight with the airline. If a notice remains ambiguous, treat that uncertainty as a decision factor: choose an itinerary with more schedule flexibility, a simpler airport path or a connection that leaves practical time for the published routing. That is a risk-management choice, not a guarantee that one option will operate without disruption.
