Start with comfortable walking shoes that can be removed quickly, then add a hat, sunscreen, weather layers, water, and only the belongings allowed by the venue. Before leaving, read the specific show’s current visitor information for boarding rules, bag searches or storage, accessibility, and family guidance.
The essential boat-show packing list
The right kit is small but deliberate. Use this checklist as a starting point, then adjust it to the forecast and the event’s own rules.

| Bring | Why it matters | How to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Comfortable walking shoes | Outdoor shows involve extended walking on docks, paths, and hard surfaces. | Choose supportive footwear that is easy to slip on and off. Follow each boat’s instructions about removing shoes or using shoe covers. |
| Light jacket or weather layer | Marinas can feel cooler or windier than expected, and conditions can change during a long visit. | Check the local forecast and dress in layers. Add a compact rain layer when rain is possible. |
| Sun hat and sunscreen | Much of the event may be exposed to direct sun. | Use a hat that stays secure in wind and apply sunscreen before arrival; reapply according to its label. |
| Sunglasses | Glare from water and bright decks can make viewing uncomfortable. | Pack them in a protective case so they are available without adding loose items. |
| Water and personal necessities | Walking, heat, and waiting to board can make hydration and routine needs easy to overlook. | Carry only what the venue permits, and confirm whether outside drinks or containers have restrictions. |
| Small, manageable bag | Large bags may not have storage available and can be subject to security checks. | Use a compact bag that leaves both hands free when climbing steps or holding a rail. |
Newport International Boat Show’s FAQ puts the core advice plainly: “Bring a light jacket, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes that are easily slipped on and off as some boat displays will ask you to remove your shoes before boarding.” That is useful general guidance, but the show you attend may set different conditions.
Choose shoes for walking and boarding
Prioritize support over appearance
Boat-show footwear has two jobs: keep you comfortable while walking the grounds and let you comply quickly when an exhibitor asks you to board barefoot or in covered shoes. Select a pair you have already worn for long walks. A stable sole, adequate cushioning, and a secure fit matter more than a formal nautical look. Avoid footwear that rubs, slips on wet surfaces, or becomes difficult to remove after your feet swell during a long day.

Make removal simple
Some exhibitors ask visitors to remove shoes before entering a boat to protect the interior. Easy-on, easy-off shoes reduce queues and prevent you from balancing on one foot while others wait. Slip-ons are convenient, but any shoe with a simple closure can work if you can remove and replace it without stopping at the companionway. Keep socks in good condition because you may be asked to step aboard in them.
Follow the individual boat’s rule
Instructions can differ from one display to the next. One boat may require bare feet, another may provide or require shoe covers, and another may allow shoes that meet its own cleanliness rule. Ask an attendant before stepping onto a swim platform, ladder, or deck. Do not assume that a rule used by one exhibitor applies to the entire show.
Plan for wet and uneven surfaces
Marina paths, ramps, and dock surfaces can be damp or uneven. Choose traction appropriate to the conditions without bringing a bulky second pair unless the forecast or the venue makes it necessary. If rain is expected, pack a way to keep your walking shoes and socks dry after a boat visit.

Dress in layers for the local forecast
Check the forecast for the venue, not just your town
Waterfront weather can differ from conditions a short distance inland. Look at the forecast for the show’s location and the hours you expect to be there. Note temperature, wind, rain probability, and sun exposure. The event’s own policy also matters: Miami and Fort Lauderdale describe their shows as operating rain or shine, so a wet forecast is not necessarily a reason to expect cancellation.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Use a light, removable layer
A lightweight jacket or overshirt is easier to carry than a heavy coat once the day warms up. Wear a base layer that remains comfortable under a jacket and choose materials that dry reasonably quickly if mist or spray reaches you. A compact rain jacket is a sensible addition when showers are possible; it is practical preparation, not a guarantee that every show requires one.
Prepare for wind and sudden showers
Wind can make a mild temperature feel cold on an exposed dock. A hood or brim that stays secure, plus a layer that blocks wind, can be more useful than an insulated garment. Keep a rain layer accessible rather than buried under other items. If you bring an umbrella, verify that the venue permits it and that it will not obstruct crowded walkways or neighboring visitors’ views.
Keep clothing boat-friendly
Wear clothing that lets you climb short ladders, step over coamings, and sit or crouch briefly without snagging on hardware. Avoid long, loose accessories that can catch on rails. A layer that can be tied or packed leaves your hands free when you use a gangway or hold a handrail.
Protect yourself from sun and glare
Pack a hat and sunscreen
Outdoor boat shows expose you to reflected light from the water and bright fiberglass decks. Bring a sun hat and apply sunscreen before entering the grounds. Reapply as directed on the product label, especially after sweating or contact with water. A hat with a secure fit is preferable on a breezy dock; a loose one can become a hazard or be lost overboard.

Add sunglasses and practical skin coverage
Sunglasses are included in a 2026 Palm Beach show guide and are useful wherever glare is strong. Carry them in a case when boarding so they do not fall from a pocket. Long sleeves or lightweight trousers can provide additional coverage when the forecast calls for strong sun, while still allowing comfortable movement.
Carry less: bags, security, and storage
Check the venue’s bag policy first
Storage and entry rules are not standardized. Miami and Fort Lauderdale state that they do not provide storage for large bags, and Fort Lauderdale says all bags are subject to security search. Those policies make a small day bag the safer default. Read the current visitor instructions for the exact show because a rule at one waterfront venue does not establish the rule at another.
Pack an organized, hands-free bag
Choose a compact backpack, cross-body bag, or similar carrier that does not interfere with climbing steps or holding a rail. Put frequently used items—phone, ticket, sunscreen, sunglasses, and weather layer—where you can reach them without emptying the bag. Keep valuables minimal, and do not bring tools, oversized containers, or other items that the event may prohibit.

Allow extra time if the show searches bags. Keep identification, tickets, and any required confirmations easy to present. If you are attending with companions, decide in advance who will hold the shared items while others board; this avoids leaving a bag unattended or blocking a narrow dock.

Prepare for the boarding process
Read the display signs and ask before entering
Boat access can be limited by capacity, staffing, weather, or a private showing. Wait for an invitation or follow the marked queue rather than stepping aboard when a deck appears open. Ask whether shoes must be removed, covered, or left at a designated location. Keep your belongings with you unless staff provide a secure place for them.
Use rails and take your time
Boarding often involves a step, ramp, or narrow passage. Face the step, use the handrail, and avoid carrying more than you can control. Wet decks require extra caution. If you are unsure whether a route is safe for you, ask an attendant for an alternative or skip that display.
Respect capacity and interior finishes
Follow staff directions about how many people may enter a boat at once. Do not place a wet jacket, sunscreen-covered bag, or sharp object on upholstery. Keep zippers and buckles from dragging across surfaces, and replace shoes or covers exactly where staff direct you before leaving.
Plan for marina access and mobility needs
Review the map and accessibility information
Show grounds can include long paths, ramps, floating docks, and narrow access points. Review the event map and accessibility page before travel, then contact the organizer with specific questions about parking, drop-off, rest areas, accessible toilets, and boarding assistance. Conditions can change with tides, weather, or temporary exhibits.

Account for ramps and tide conditions
Auckland’s visitor guidance notes that marina access can be narrow and that low-tide ramps may become too steep for manual wheelchairs. This is venue-specific information, but it illustrates why a general promise of accessibility is not enough. Ask about the route on the date and time you plan to arrive, including whether an accessible boat display is available.
Bring mobility aids that suit the surface
Use the aid that gives you the most stable control on the show’s paths and ramps. If you use a powered device, confirm charging, turning space, and any weight or width limits in advance. A companion should not attempt to push or lift a device on a steep ramp without staff guidance.
Make a family plan
Choose the right child carrier
Auckland recommends baby carriers for young children because pushchair space on the marina can be limited during busy periods. Treat this as advice for that venue, not a universal rule. Ask the show whether strollers are permitted on docks, where they can be parked, and which routes have enough turning room.
Recommended Free Tools
Pack child-specific essentials without overloading
Bring nappies, wipes, medication, snacks, and a change of clothing in a small, organized bag, subject to the venue’s entry policy. Dress children in sun protection and layers, and give them a simple rule for boarding: wait for an adult, hold the rail, and follow the crew’s instructions.
Set meeting and rest points
Large shows can separate a group quickly. Identify an information desk or another agreed landmark, and decide what to do if phones lose signal. Schedule breaks before children or older relatives become overtired; crowded docks are harder to navigate when everyone is rushing.
Use a pre-departure check
- Confirm the event details. Recheck the date, opening hours, entrance, parking or transit instructions, ticket requirements, and the latest visitor FAQ.
- Read the restrictions. Look specifically for bag size, security screening, storage, outside food or drink, photography, and boat-boarding rules.
- Check the forecast. Note rain, wind, temperature changes, and sun exposure for the full time you will be outside.
- Lay out your clothing. Wear broken-in walking shoes and pack a removable layer, rain protection when appropriate, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
- Plan the route. Study the map, identify accessible entrances and restrooms, and call the organizer about any accommodation that is not clearly described.
- Charge essentials. A charged phone helps with tickets, maps, weather updates, and contacting companions, but keep your bag light.
Adjust your kit to the conditions
| Forecast or situation | Adjustments | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Hot and sunny | Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, breathable layers, and water if permitted. | Shade, refill points, and indoor rest areas. |
| Cool or windy | Light insulating layer plus a wind-resistant outer layer; keep hands free for rails. | Whether exposed docks or ramps may close temporarily. |
| Rain possible | Packable rain jacket, quick-drying clothing, and a plan for wet footwear. | Rain-or-shine policy, covered areas, and any weather-related boarding changes. |
| Mobility or access concern | Use the most stable mobility aid and carry only a manageable bag. | Ramp gradients, tide-related access, dock width, accessible toilets, and assistance procedures. |
| Busy family visit | Baby carrier where the venue recommends it, compact supplies, and a meeting point. | Stroller rules, child facilities, and crowd-management guidance. |
What to leave at home
- Unworn footwear. A new pair can create blisters before you reach the first display.
- Oversized bags. They may have no storage option and can slow security screening or obstruct narrow docks.
- Loose accessories. Long scarves, dangling straps, and unsecured hats can catch on rails or blow away.
- Unverified equipment. Do not assume that umbrellas, tripods, drones, large coolers, or outside food are allowed; check the event’s current rules.
- Unnecessary valuables. Bring only what you need for identification, payment, communication, and personal care.
During the visit: a simple routine
At entry, note the location of information staff, restrooms, first aid, and the nearest sheltered area. Keep sunscreen and your weather layer reachable. Before each boat, pause at the sign or queue entrance to confirm boarding and footwear instructions. When moving between docks, walk at the pace that gives you secure footing rather than trying to keep up with a group. If conditions deteriorate, use the map to reach shelter and check staff announcements for changes.
The best packing decision is the one that matches the specific show. Official guidance differs among Newport, Southampton, Auckland, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Sausalito, and the 2026 Palm Beach event guide, and instructions can change from year to year. Use the general checklist above, then let the selected venue’s current FAQ determine what you actually carry and how you plan to board.
