What the Roborock S8 Does That Older Roombas Can’t—and What Newer Models Can

The Roborock S8’s sonic mop, carpet-aware lifting and detailed mapping distinguish it from many older Roombas—but newer models have closed much of the gap.

The original Roborock S8 combines active sonic mopping, automatic mop lifting over carpet, dual rubber rollers, structured-light obstacle avoidance and detailed room mapping. Those features set it apart from many older Roombas, but the headline claim is not true of every Roomba in 2026: the Combo j7+ and newer models offer several comparable capabilities. The S8’s biggest catch is its upkeep—the base model does not automatically empty its bin or wash and dry its mop.

First, which Roborock S8 is this?

This comparison is about the original Roborock S8, not the S8+, S8 Pro Ultra, S8 Max Ultra or S8 MaxV Ultra. The standard S8 is a robot vacuum and mop with a conventional charging dock. Roborock’s support documentation distinguishes its VibraRise system from the upgraded dual-vibration arrangement on the S8 Pro Ultra (Roborock’s S8-series mopping-system guide).

Do not assume that the base S8 washes its mop, dries it, refills its water or empties its bin automatically. The S8+ adds automatic dirt disposal; Ultra-family docks provide more extensive mop and water handling. The suffix matters when comparing convenience and price.

What the S8 does differently from many older Roombas

It scrubs with a vibrating mop

The S8’s VibraRise mop vibrates against hard floors rather than simply dragging a damp cloth. That active motion can help with light marks during routine cleaning, but it is not a substitute for hand-scrubbing dried, greasy or heavy spills. The original S8 has one mop pad, a limited water supply and no automatic mop washing, so the owner must clean the pad to avoid spreading accumulated dirt.

The 30 adjustable water levels help the robot vacuum cleaner adapt to all floor types, from delicate hardwoods to tiles. The 10mm lift feature allows it to seamlessly transition to low-pile carpets, ensuring no wet messes and complete cleaning versatility.

It lifts the mop when it detects carpet

Roborock says the S8 can automatically lift its mop after detecting carpet (Roborock’s carpet-mopping support guide). That can make mixed hard-floor-and-rug homes easier to manage than older hybrids that required a mop attachment change, separate missions or manually defined no-mop areas.

Lifting is not the same as retracting the pad completely onto the robot’s top. On some rugs, especially thick pile, the raised pad may still be too close to the fibers. Test carpet crossings while present; if detection or clearance is unreliable, set a no-mop zone around the rug.

It uses depth-oriented obstacle sensing

The S8’s Reactive 3D system combines structured light and infrared imaging to detect objects, rather than relying only on a bumper to discover them. Roborock describes the system as designed to work in bright and dark rooms (Roborock S8 product page). It can reduce encounters with ordinary floor clutter, but it is not a guarantee that every cable, dark object, reflective surface or low obstacle will be recognized.

Roborock’s product information reports detection of objects around 5 cm wide and 3 cm high in internal testing; treat that as a manufacturer test claim, not a promise for every home (Roborock S8 product information). Clear cords, small toys, tassels, liquids and pet waste before cleaning. Obstacle avoidance is useful insurance, not permission to leave hazards in the robot’s path.

Brushes, suction and what they mean on carpet

The S8 has two counter-rotating rubber rollers, which Roborock calls DuoRoller. The design is intended to agitate debris and handle hair with less tangling than some bristle-heavy arrangements, though hair can still wrap around roller ends and bearings. Roomba j-series models also use dual rubber brushes, so two rollers are not an S8-exclusive advantage (Roomba j7 product page).

Roborock advertises 6,000 Pa of suction for the S8 (Roborock S8 specifications). That is a manufacturer rating, not a standardized cross-brand cleaning test. Airflow, brush contact, seals, dustbin design, floor type and cleaning mode all affect pickup. iRobot’s relative “Power-Lifting Suction” claims use different baselines, so they cannot be compared directly with the S8’s Pa figure. A larger number alone does not prove better carpet cleaning.

On low- and medium-pile carpet, the rollers and higher suction settings can make the S8 a credible everyday cleaner. Thick shag, loose weaves, fringe and deeply embedded pet hair are harder cases for any compact robot. Its mop should lift over detected carpet, but the clearance may not protect every rug. A round robot can also leave some residue at edges and inside corners, where its side brush cannot reach completely.

The S8’s underside mop lift and the j7+’s top-mounted retraction are different approaches. The latter moves the pad fully away from the floor, which may offer better clearance for some carpet crossings. The S8’s vibration and mapping remain meaningful distinctions, but neither makes it categorically more capable than every Roomba.

iRobot’s July 7, 2026 announcement introduced the Roomba Max 715 vacuum robot and Roomba Plus 575 Combo among a newer generation (iRobot’s announcement). Their capabilities vary by model, so compare the specific product and dock rather than assuming all new Roombas share every advertised feature.

Mapping and room-by-room control

The S8’s LiDAR-based maps and app controls let owners direct cleaning by room or zone, set schedules, and create invisible walls, no-go zones or no-mop zones. That is useful for a targeted pass around a dining table, keeping a robot out of a work area, or avoiding a rug if carpet detection is inconsistent. Room-specific vacuum and mop settings can help separate carpeted spaces from hard floors. Roborock’s exact controls can vary with app version, firmware and region, so consult the controls shown for your own device.

Room-level control is not unique to Roborock. iRobot lists room-specific preferences on the Combo j7+, including different vacuum and mop behavior by room (Combo j7+ product page). The useful comparison is how a particular model maps and lets you manage your home, not whether a brand has an app.

  • 𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟳-𝟵 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: With a 2.7L sealed dust bag, the RockDock Plus efficiently collects pet hair, dirt, and debris without the need for constant emptying. This means longer cleaning cycles and more time between maintenance, ensuring your home stays consistently clean.

  • 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗲: This advanced system combines vacuuming and mopping in one go, effectively capturing even the finest dust that traditional vacuuming may leave behind. With three adjustable water flow settings, you can tailor the cleaning power to meet your specific needs.

What you still have to do by hand

The base S8 can automate a cleaning run, but it does not automate all the work around that run. Expect to:

  • Empty the robot’s dustbin.
  • Refill its water tank and remove and wash the mop cloth.
  • Clear hair from the rollers, roller ends and side brush.
  • Clean sensors and charging contacts, and maintain the filter and other consumables.
  • Retrieve the robot if it becomes stuck or reports a navigation problem.

This is a substantial difference from an Ultra-style dock that handles more of the routine mop and water work. If you want less daily intervention, compare the full dock package and its maintenance—not just the robot’s cleaning features.

Who should buy the original S8?

It makes sense for mixed-floor homes that want routine mopping

Consider it if your home has substantial hard flooring, some low- or medium-pile carpet, and you want a vibrating mop with automatic carpet-aware lifting. The combination is most appealing when you value room and zone control and are comfortable washing the pad and emptying the bin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pet owners should plan for inspection

Dual rubber rollers and obstacle sensing can help in a shedding-pet home, but expect to check for hair wrapped at roller ends and to manage litter, food and pet bowls. Do not rely on the S8 to avoid pet accidents. iRobot advertises pet-waste avoidance coverage for the Combo j7+ subject to its terms; no equivalent blanket promise is established for the S8 (iRobot Combo j7+ details).

It is a poor fit for thick rugs or truly hands-free expectations

Choose a different setup if your home is dominated by thick shag, tassels, frequent spills or highly cluttered floors, or if you expect a robot to need almost no attention. The S8 cannot guarantee deep stain removal, corner cleaning or hazard recognition, and its base dock leaves recurring chores to you.

How to choose among the S8 family and Roombas

  • Original S8: Choose it when its sonic mop, underside mop lift and mapping suit your home and its live price is compelling; budget for hands-on bin and mop care.
  • S8+: Consider it for automatic dirt disposal while retaining the S8 platform. Do not mistake the plus dock for an Ultra dock that washes and dries the mop.
  • S8 Pro Ultra, S8 Max Ultra or S8 MaxV Ultra: Compare these separately if you want more dock automation; they are not simply the base S8 with a different name. Larger docks need more space and may not be worth the extra cost if you do not need automated mop care. Roborock’s S8 MaxV Ultra page describes a separate model.
  • Roomba Combo j7+: Consider it if top-mounted mop retraction, the iRobot app/ecosystem or the model’s stated pet-waste terms matter more to you than sonic scrubbing.
  • Roomba Combo i5: Compare it as a simpler hybrid, especially if the price is attractive and you are willing to manage removable mop hardware.
  • Newer 2026 Roomba: Compare the exact model, dock, mopping system and live availability. iRobot’s July announcement listed MSRPs of $699.99 for the Max 715 and $799.99 for the Plus 575 Combo; those are announced MSRPs, not necessarily current selling prices.

Current US prices and availability can change, and no dependable live price is established here for the original S8 or the j7+. Compare the actual checkout price, dock included, and replacement-part costs before buying.
