For most greenhouse plants grown in containers, use a quality soilless growing medium suited to the crop and irrigation system. Peat- or coconut-coir-based mixes with perlite or vermiculite are common starting points because they can balance moisture retention, air space and drainage. The best choice depends on what you are growing: seedlings, established container plants and hydroponic crops can need different media.
What “soil” usually means in a greenhouse
In container production, greenhouse “soil” often means a prepared root medium rather than soil dug from a garden. Many potting mixes are soilless, which helps avoid soilborne diseases and supports drainage, according to Penn State Extension. Greenhouse media may contain peat, perlite, vermiculite, sand, bark, coconut fiber (coir) or compost, as described by the University of Missouri Extension.
Choose a medium by how it behaves around roots: it should hold enough water for the crop, retain air space, drain at an appropriate rate and provide nutrients in a manageable way. A mix that stays wet too long may not suit a crop or watering routine that needs faster drainage; a very open mix may need more frequent irrigation.
Choose a medium for the crop and growing system
Seed starting and young seedlings
Penn State gives one seed-mix recipe of 50–75% sphagnum peat and 25–50% vermiculite, with lime and nutrient amendments. That is a published example, not a universal formula. Seedlings need a medium that supports early root growth, and slow-release organic nutrients can be harder to manage at this stage.

General container growing
A commercial soilless potting mix, or a peat- or coir-based blend with perlite or vermiculite, is a practical starting category for many greenhouse containers. Check the ingredient list and whether fertilizer is already included before deciding how to feed plants. Adjust the medium and watering routine to the crop’s needs.
Hydroponic containers
Hydroponic substrates can include perlite, coir, rockwool, potting mix, gravel and expanded clay pellets. The right option depends on the system: the medium affects irrigation frequency, and organic options such as potting mix may require more active root-zone pH management. See Missouri Extension’s greenhouse-media guidance for context.

Organic production
Do not assume that every commercial mix or wetting agent is approved for organic production. Penn State advises checking ingredients and confirming a product’s organic listing or approval with the relevant certifier.
Can you use garden soil in a greenhouse?
Garden soil is not automatically forbidden in every greenhouse use, but it is not interchangeable with a formulated container medium. Soilless mixes are common because they help avoid soilborne disease and promote drainage. For greenhouse containers, consider whether the material will drain and aerate appropriately and whether its nutrient and pH characteristics suit the crop. The guidance available does not establish a blanket rule for every garden-soil use or greenhouse system.

Check pH, salts and nutrients with the right test
There is no single pH or nutrient target for every greenhouse crop. Missouri Extension notes that desirable pH, soluble-salt and nutrient levels vary with the crop and management. Penn State reports the following benchmark for premium potting mixes tested by the saturated-paste method recommended for greenhouse media; it attributes the figures to Warncke (1995). Treat them as method-specific reference values, not universal targets.
| Measure | Penn State benchmark for premium potting mixes |
|---|---|
| pH | 5.5–6.5 |
| Soluble salts | 1.5–3 mmhos/cm |
| Nitrate nitrogen | 75–150 mg/L |
| Phosphorus | 5–20 mg/L |
| Potassium | 150–300 mg/L |
| Calcium | 100–200 mg/L |
| Magnesium | 50–100 mg/L |
| Sodium | Below 160 mg/L |
If a mix is unfamiliar or a new batch arrives, use a greenhouse soilless-media analysis rather than submitting it as an ordinary soil sample. Penn State says the greenhouse analysis measures pH, soluble salts (electrical conductivity) and nutrients; ordinary soil-test results for soilless media may not make sense. A small bioassay—growing cress, oats, beans, lettuce or another fast-germinating crop—can also screen for poor germination or weak seedling growth. Handheld EC meters are another available way to check electrical conductivity.

Water matters too. Penn State explains that growing-media pH influences nutrient availability, while water alkalinity—the capacity to neutralize acids—can affect how media pH changes over time. A suitable starting mix can therefore behave differently depending on irrigation water and management.
