As a general guide, smaller TVs often use M4, medium TVs commonly use M6, and larger TVs often use M8. However, screen size is only a starting point—not a safe way to choose hardware.
The correct screw must have the right diameter, thread pitch, length, washers, and spacers for both your television and wall mount. Check the TV’s model-specific manual before installing it, and never force a screw that binds or stops prematurely.

The short answer: M4, M6, or M8
Sony’s general mounting guidance gives these approximate starting points:

| 45 inches and larger | M8 | Exact pitch, length, and rear-panel clearance |
These ranges are useful only as a first check. A 55-inch television is not automatically an M8 television, and M5 hardware is also used on some models. Sony describes its table as general guidance, while Samsung directs owners to the exact user guide for the required bolt size and length.

Sony’s mounting guide and Samsung’s mounting instructions both support the same practical rule: identify the model before buying replacement screws.
What “M8 × 1.25 × 20 mm” means
A complete metric screw description contains more information than just “M8”:
- M8 is the approximate outside diameter of the threaded portion—about 8 mm.
- 1.25 is the thread pitch: the distance between thread crests, measured in millimeters.
- 20 mm is the nominal screw length, measured from beneath the head to the tip.
Thus, M8 × 1.25 × 20 mm is an 8 mm-diameter screw with a 1.25 mm pitch and a 20 mm nominal length. “M8” alone is incomplete: the diameter may be correct while the pitch or length is wrong.
Samsung documentation for cited TV families identifies a 1.25 mm pitch with M4, M6, and M8 diameters, but that information should not be generalized to every Samsung model. The model-specific manual remains the controlling source.
VESA size is not screw size
The VESA pattern is the horizontal-by-vertical distance, in millimeters, between the TV’s threaded mounting holes. Common patterns include:

- 600 × 400 mm
- 800 × 400 mm
For example, 400 × 400 describes hole spacing. It does not mean the TV takes M4 screws, nor does it specify screw length. A mount must support the TV’s VESA pattern, weight, screen size, rear clearance, and mounting-hole arrangement.
Samsung’s VESA guidance lists several common patterns, including 100 × 100, 200 × 100, 200 × 200, 400 × 400, and 600 × 400 mm.
How to find the exact screw specification
- Find the full TV model number. Look on the rear label, original packaging, receipt, settings menu, or the manufacturer’s support-registration page.
- Open the manufacturer’s support site and search for that exact model.
- Download the owner’s manual or wall-mounting guide.
- Search the PDF for “wall mount,” “VESA,” “mounting screw,” “bolt,” “screw size,” or “screw length.”
- Check the wall mount manual for its supported VESA patterns, bracket thickness, washers, spacers, and supplied screw options.
- Compare both manuals before installing.
If the TV manual and mount manual specify different hardware, do not improvise. Contact the TV or mount manufacturer, or use a mounting system that clearly supports the television.
How to choose the correct screw length
Length depends on more than the threaded hole. Account for:
- Bracket thickness
- Washer thickness
- Spacer thickness
- Factory-installed stand-offs or adapters
- The depth of the TV’s threaded insert
- A recessed, curved, or irregular rear panel
If the manual supplies a permitted thread-engagement range, the basic calculation is:

- PACKAGE INCLUDES: 1 x WALI UVSP Package, User Manual
Required screw length ≈ bracket thickness + washer thickness + spacer thickness + permitted thread engagement.
This is only a way to understand the measurement. It does not authorize exceeding the manufacturer’s maximum insertion depth. Samsung describes the relevant permissible dimension as the minimum and maximum bolt length measured from the rear cover through the bracket and into the internal threads.
Some Sony instructions for particular 2024 BRAVIA models specify an 8–12 mm extension from the bracket’s attachment surface. That is a model-specific instruction, not a universal Sony or TV rule.
Why a recessed back may need spacers
If the VESA holes sit below the surrounding rear housing, the bracket may require spacers, longer screws, or a supplied adapter plate. The bracket should sit flat and be supported evenly. Do not bend the bracket against the TV or use a longer screw without the specified spacer arrangement.
Universal hardware packs may include spacers such as short and long stand-offs, but their presence does not prove that a particular spacer is correct for your television.

How to test-fit the screws safely
- Disconnect the TV from power and place it screen-down on a clean, padded, stable surface.
- Position the bracket and any specified spacer or adapter against the television.
- Start every screw by hand.
- Turn it gently for several rotations. A correct screw should engage smoothly.
- Stop immediately if it binds, cross-threads, or reaches a hard stop early.
- Do not use an impact driver or force a screw with a wrench or drill.
- Tighten only according to the mount manufacturer’s instructions and specified torque, if provided.
- Use a second person when lifting or positioning a large television.
A screw that enters only one or two turns is not automatically safe. It may provide too little thread engagement to hold the bracket securely.
Common problems and the correct response
| Problem | Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Screw will not start | Wrong diameter, pitch, or alignment | Stop and verify the complete specification. Do not force a larger screw. |
| Screw spins without tightening | Screw is too short or threads are damaged | Use the specified length and inspect the threaded insert. |
| Bracket remains loose | Screw is bottoming out, or a washer or spacer is missing | Recheck the length and the spacer arrangement. |
| TV back flexes | Bracket is pressing directly against the housing | Use the specified spacers or adapter; do not compress the panel. |
| Screw reaches a hard stop early | Screw is too long | Replace it with an approved shorter screw. |
| Mounting holes do not line up | Wrong VESA pattern or incompatible mount | Confirm the pattern, weight rating, and mount compatibility. |
Are TV mounting screws universal?
No. Many wall mounts include assorted M4, M5, M6, and M8 screws in several lengths, but there is no single universal TV screw. Even a screw with the correct diameter may have the wrong pitch, be too short, be dangerously long, or require a spacer that is not installed.
For example, SANUS sells a universal hardware pack containing multiple metric diameters, lengths, washers, and spacers. That assortment is useful because TVs vary; it is not a guarantee that every included screw is safe for every model.

The screws that attach the bracket to the television are normally metric machine screws that match the TV’s threaded inserts. Do not replace them with wood screws, drywall screws, self-tapping screws, or ordinary sheet-metal screws.

The hardware attaching the wall plate to the wall is a separate matter. Its selection depends on whether the wall contains wood studs, steel studs, masonry, concrete, brick, or only drywall. Sony notes that wall-fastening hardware varies according to wall material.
Best Value
- 【ALL IN ONE PACK】Our tv wall mount screws kit is packed in a box, so each component can be identified and kept in place when not in use. Includes M4, M5, M6, and M8 screws, plus washers and spacers, covering the common sizes used in TV/ monitor wall mount installation.
- 【WIDE TV COMPATIBILITY】Designed for TV wall mount applications and compatible with most TVs and monitors up to 80 inches. Works with common mounting patterns.
- 【MULTI-SIZE CONFIGURATIONS】Multiple screw lengths and spacer thicknesses are provided to accommodate different TV back panel depths and mounting configurations.
- 【EASY SIZE IDENTIFICATION】Each compartment in the storage box is labeled by screw size and component type, allowing quick identification during installation.
- 【MOUNTING HARDWARE KIT】Includes screws, washers, and spacers for use with compatible TV/monitor wall mounts. The soundbar or TV itself is not included.
Do not mount a heavy television to drywall alone unless the mount is specifically engineered and approved for that installation. The wall, fasteners, mount, TV weight, stud spacing, and installation method all affect safety.
Do all four VESA holes need screws?
Normally, yes. Use all four TV mounting holes unless the TV or mount manufacturer explicitly approves another arrangement. A universal bracket may contain slots for several VESA patterns, but that does not mean any convenient subset of holes is acceptable.
Samsung installation documentation recommends fastening all four VESA screws where the installation permits it. Never compensate for a short screw by leaving out mounting points.

Special cases that deserve extra caution
- Curved TVs: May need longer M8 screws, larger spacers, or manufacturer-specific adapters.
- OLED and ultra-thin TVs: Often have thin housings, recessed holes, or strict screw-depth limits.
- No-gap mounts: May use offset pieces or proprietary hardware rather than a simple screw-and-bracket arrangement.
- Some Sony BRAVIA models: May follow a VESA measurement while differing in hole number or depth from a conventional arrangement. Follow the model-specific instructions.
- Very small TVs and monitors: May use M4 or M5 hardware instead of the sizes common on full-size televisions.
- Manufacturer adapters: Some televisions require adapter plates, stand-offs, or supplied mounting hardware.
- Non-VESA televisions: May need a brand-specific mount, adapter, tabletop stand, or different mounting method.
- External connection boxes: Check that the mount leaves adequate room for cables and the separate box.
Should you buy individual screws, a universal kit, or a new mount?
Individual replacement screws
Best when you know the exact model specification. They are inexpensive and precise, but buying the wrong pitch or length is easy. Specify the complete size—for example, M6 × 1.0 × 12 mm—rather than asking for “TV screws.”
Universal hardware kit
Best when the original TV-side hardware is missing and you already have a compatible mount. Kits from brands such as SANUS and ECHOGEAR typically provide M4, M5, M6, and M8 options with multiple lengths, washers, and spacers.
Use a kit only after matching one specific combination to the TV manual. “Fits most TVs” is not proof that a particular screw is safe.
Replace the entire wall mount
Consider a new mount if the existing mount is damaged, lacks instructions, does not support the TV’s VESA pattern or weight, or has missing proprietary adapters. A complete mount may make compatibility easier to verify, but you still need to assess wall construction and installation safety.

Professional installation is sensible for very large or heavy TVs, steel-stud or masonry walls, high-value OLEDs, difficult cable routing, installations above fireplaces or furniture, or any situation where you cannot confidently identify the wall structure. Sony recommends qualified professionals for TV wall installations.
