Start with a drill bit close to the dowel’s measured diameter, then test the bit and dowel together in scrap that matches your project wood and grain direction. For a glued joint, the right hole lets the dowel slide in by hand with noticeable friction—not loose, and not so tight that it must be driven into place.
How to gauge the right dowel-hole size
- Measure the dowel. Use calipers if available; a dowel’s labeled size is only a starting point.
- Choose a candidate bit. Select one close to the measured diameter. A brad-point bit can help start accurately in wood, but the bit’s nominal size does not guarantee the finished hole size.
- Drill a test hole. Use scrap matching the project material and grain orientation, and keep the drilling setup the same.
- Check the fit by hand. The dowel should slide in with friction without hammering or forcing. If it feels loose, test a smaller bit; if it binds, test a larger bit or adjust the dowel.
- Repeat for different conditions. Test again if the project changes substrate or grain orientation, then use the tested bit and setup on the workpiece.
This practical test is more dependable than assuming a bit and dowel with matching nominal sizes will fit. The finished hole can vary with material and grain direction, and there is no established universal clearance that covers every wood species, substrate, moisture condition, bit, dowel tolerance, and adhesive.

Why the same bit may make a different-size hole
Wood and wood-based materials do not necessarily respond to drilling in the same way. Fine Woodworking notes that one bit may produce different-size holes in face grain and end grain. Excel Dowel likewise says an 8 mm bit can produce four different finished hole sizes in particleboard, MDF, plywood, or solid wood. These examples are why a test hole should match both the project material and the direction of the grain.
The target also depends on the joint. A glued, fixed joint needs a snug fit that can still be assembled by hand. A moving or clearance fit has a different purpose, so do not apply the friction-fit target automatically when the dowel must move.

Choose dowel diameter separately from hole clearance
Dowel diameter is a stock-design choice; it does not tell you how much clearance to drill around the dowel. WOOD Magazine’s March 4, 2025 guidance recommends dowels about half the stock thickness, with examples of 3/8-inch dowels for 3/4-inch stock and 1/4-inch dowels for 1/2-inch stock. Fine Woodworking’s “All About Dowels and Biscuits” gives a rule of about one-third the material thickness. Treat these as rules of thumb, not hole-size specifications.
For edge joints specifically, WOOD Magazine says to space dowels roughly 10 inches apart. That advice is for the edge-joint context and should not be treated as a spacing rule for every dowel joint.

- COMPLETE 5-PIECE WOODWORKING SET: Get the five most essential sizes for professional woodworking in one convenient package. This set includes 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16", and 1/2" bits, equipping you for a wide range of joinery, hardware, and doweling tasks.
- PRECISION STARTS, NO WANDERING: Each bit features a sharp, precision-ground brad point tip that bites into wood on contact. This prevents bit wandering, ensuring your holes are placed exactly where intended, a critical need for fine woodworking and accurate assembly.
- FLAWLESS, TEAR-OUT-FREE HOLES: Engineered with sharp outer spurs that slice wood fibers cleanly before the main cutting edge removes material. This advanced design delivers an exceptionally smooth, professional-grade hole in both hard and soft woods, minimizing follow-up sanding.
- JOB SITE & WORKSHOP VERSATILITY: Designed for reliable performance in both portable handheld drills for on-site work and stationary drill presses for the shop. This flexibility allows you to achieve consistent, workshop-level precision with every bit in this set across all your applications.
- ENGINEERED FOR PROFESSIONAL DURABILITY: Constructed from a robust steel alloy, each bit is built to withstand the demands of daily professional use. The durable material maintains its sharp cutting edge through repeated drilling, ensuring a long service life and consistent value.
Leave room for glue in blind holes
A blind hole needs enough depth for the dowel and adhesive, plus a way for excess glue to escape. WOOD Magazine advises drilling each hole about 1/16 inch deeper than half the dowel length in its example. Wolfcraft’s “Guide to Wood Joints” illustrates a 2 mm glue-space allowance. These are examples tied to their respective arrangements, not values to combine blindly; set depth for the dowel length and joint you are making. Fluted dowels can also provide channels for excess glue, as Fine Woodworking notes.

When a jig helps—and what it cannot do
A doweling jig with bushings can help keep holes perpendicular, aligned, and repeatable. It improves registration, but it does not guarantee the desired hole diameter in a particular material. Test the bit and dowel in representative scrap even when using a jig.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A note on numeric clearance advice
A historical Fine Woodworking article, “The dowel joint,” says the dowel should be several thousandths of an inch smaller than the mortise for water-based emulsion glues. That is context-specific historical guidance, not a universal modern clearance specification. For a particular glued joint, the representative scrap test remains the practical check when no tested clearance value is specified for the exact material and adhesive.
