What Size Circuit Breaker Do I Need for an Air Conditioner?

Air conditioner breaker size is model-specific. Use the nameplate’s MCA and MOCP/MOP, check any minimum rating, and verify panel compatibility and local code.

There is no single breaker size for every air conditioner. Use the exact unit’s nameplate and installation instructions: MCA helps determine the minimum conductor ampacity, while MOCP or MOP sets the maximum permitted fuse or breaker size. The correct rating also depends on any marked minimum protection, the electrical panel, and local code. Without the unit model and panel details, a specific ampere rating cannot be determined.

Read the air conditioner’s nameplate first

Locate the data plate on the outdoor unit and the installation manual for that exact model. Record the required voltage, MCA, MOCP or MOP, and any separate minimum fuse or circuit-breaker marking. Some manufacturer documentation also lists electrical data in factory order or submittal information; Johnson Controls describes those locations in its 2024 rooftop-unit guide.

Do not choose a breaker from the air conditioner’s tonnage alone. Electrical requirements vary by model, even among products in the same product family. For instance, an archived International Comfort Products specification sheet lists outdoor model 09J1A with 9.0 A MCA and 15 A MOCP, while model 24J2A is listed with 24.6 A MCA and 30 A MOCP. These are model-specific examples, not a sizing chart for other equipment; the sheet also notes that specifications may change (ICP specification sheet).

Understand MCA versus MOCP/MOP

MCA: minimum circuit ampacity

MCA is used to determine the minimum ampacity required for the supply conductors, subject to applicable wiring and installation rules. It is not the breaker size. The conductors must be suitable for at least the equipment’s marked MCA under the rules that apply to the installation.

MOCP or MOP: maximum overcurrent protection

MOCP or MOP is the upper limit for the fuse or circuit breaker protecting the equipment. Do not install a protective device with a rating above that marked maximum. If the nameplate also gives a minimum fuse or breaker size, the selected device must respect that lower limit too. Mitsubishi Electric Sales Canada describes MOCP as “the maximum allowable circuit breaker size” for properly disconnecting power under anticipated fault conditions in its MCA and MOCP guidance.

Why HVAC breaker sizing is not a simple wire-gauge calculation

Air conditioners contain motors and compressors with starting-current and overload-protection considerations. As a result, HVAC short-circuit and ground-fault protection may not follow the same relationship between conductor size and breaker rating as an ordinary general-purpose circuit. The equipment marking and applicable electrical code govern the installation; do not recalculate the unit’s breaker rating from a generic formula.

IAEI’s 2017 discussion illustrates the distinction with a manufacturer example showing 24 A minimum supply-circuit ampacity and 40 A maximum fuse or circuit breaker. That example explains how the markings can differ; it is not a recommendation for an unknown air conditioner or a substitute for current locally adopted code (IAEI, “Air-Conditioning Equipment Installations”). A Johnson Controls guide for specified commercial rooftop equipment describes one MCA calculation as 125% of the largest motor’s rated-load amps plus 100% of other included loads. That is equipment-specific technical guidance, not a homeowner instruction for recalculating a nameplate value (Johnson Controls, 2024).

How to choose the right protection for your installation

  1. Identify the exact equipment. Read the outdoor unit’s data plate and get the installation manual for that model.
  2. Check the electrical requirements. Note voltage, MCA, MOCP/MOP or maximum fuse/breaker, and any minimum fuse/breaker marking.
  3. Size conductors using MCA and applicable wiring rules. MCA is a conductor-ampacity value, not permission to select an arbitrary breaker.
  4. Keep overcurrent protection within the marked limits. Follow the minimum and maximum ratings and the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Verify panel and local-code compatibility. The breaker must be listed for the specific panel and appropriate for the circuit configuration and voltage. Local code adoption and amendments vary. Johnson Controls’ guide states, “All wiring must conform to the NEC and all local codes that may be in addition to the NEC.”

The cited technical examples include U.S. NEC-oriented material and Canadian manufacturer guidance. IAEI’s explanatory articles date to 1999 and 2017, so they help explain the principles but do not establish the code currently adopted in your jurisdiction. For an installation, use the unit’s exact instructions and have the locally applicable requirements verified.

If the breaker keeps tripping

Do not increase the breaker rating beyond the air conditioner’s marked maximum to stop repeated trips. Tripping can indicate an equipment problem or electrical fault; the protective device should not be bypassed by oversizing. Have a qualified electrician or HVAC technician diagnose the cause.

When to call an electrician

If the nameplate is missing or unreadable, the manual does not match the unit, the panel’s breaker compatibility is uncertain, or the required rating falls outside what the panel can support, ask a qualified electrician to assess the installation. A specific breaker cannot be selected responsibly without the unit’s electrical data and the panel information.
