In the United States, speed tables are generally identified by white pavement markings on the raised feature. Optional advance warnings may include white transverse lines, BUMP or HUMP pavement lettering, and warning signs. A speed table designed to serve as a raised crossing for pedestrians, bicyclists, or equestrians must also have crosswalk markings. The exact layout depends on the feature’s function and the requirements adopted by the state or local road authority.

Start with the feature’s purpose

A speed table is a raised roadway feature intended to manage vehicle speeds. Its signs and markings are traffic-control devices: they alert road users to the change in the road and help identify where it is. In contrast, the table’s physical dimensions and spacing are engineering-design matters, not specifications established by the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) directs readers to engineering guidance, including material from the Institute of Transportation Engineers, for physical-design criteria. See the FHWA’s general MUTCD FAQs.

Before choosing a marking pattern, determine whether the raised feature is simply intended to slow vehicles or is also designed to provide a crossing. A raised crossing is not just a speed table that happens to be near a crosswalk: the feature must incorporate a pedestrian, bicycle, or equestrian crossing and function as a raised crosswalk. That distinction affects the markings required on the feature.

This purpose-first distinction prevents a common mix-up: there is no single package of signs and markings that every speed table must use. Markings on the feature, optional warnings on the approach, and crosswalk markings serve different functions. The road authority needs to identify the feature’s role before deciding which provisions apply.

Which markings go on the raised feature?

Under MUTCD Section 3B.29, when speed-hump markings are used, white markings on the feature identify its location. If the feature also functions as a crosswalk or speed table, the markings follow one of the patterns shown in Figure 3B-27. Where a speed table specifically incorporates a crossing and functions as a raised crosswalk, crosswalk markings are required. The appropriate on-feature pattern therefore depends on the design and role of the raised feature, not just on whether it has a flat top.

The MUTCD section addresses how traffic-control devices identify the feature; it does not set the table’s height, width, length, or spacing. FHWA explains that these are physical roadway features rather than traffic-control devices in its MUTCD FAQ. A marking plan should not be treated as a substitute for engineering design or for confirming the road authority’s standards.

Think of the feature markings as identification, not as a complete design specification. They help drivers recognize the raised surface and its location. Figure 3B-27 is the relevant MUTCD reference for the applicable pattern when the feature also functions as a crosswalk or speed table. The drawing should be checked directly rather than paraphrased into a generic layout, especially when the feature has a crossing function.

Crosswalk markings are a separate requirement when the feature is designed to accommodate a pedestrian, bicycle, or equestrian movement and functions as a raised crosswalk. They are not automatically required simply because a speed table is close to an existing crossing or because people might cross there. The key question is whether the raised feature itself incorporates the crossing and serves as a raised crosswalk.

What advance warnings may be used?

Advance markings are optional under MUTCD Section 3B.30. They may be used when additional visibility is desired or when the vertical deflection could be unexpected. If used, the MUTCD specifies a sequence of eight white transverse lines in each approach lane. Each line is 12 inches wide; the lines become longer and are spaced closer together as drivers approach the feature.

The pattern is intended to give drivers a visual warning before they reach the raised surface. Its count, color, line width, lane coverage, and progression are all part of the specified treatment, not details to casually adjust when describing a compliant installation. If the agency decides the advance markings are appropriate, it should verify the sequence against Section 3B.30 and the current applicable manual.

BUMP or HUMP pavement words may also be used before the raised feature. They may appear by themselves or together with the advance transverse lines. Appropriate advance warning signs may also be used under Section 2C.27. These are options for a road authority to consider under the applicable standard and engineering judgment, not a checklist that every installation must use in full.

The options can be thought of as complementary rather than interchangeable rules: on-feature markings identify the raised feature; advance transverse lines and pavement words can provide an additional approach cue; and an advance sign can provide warning through a traffic-control device. The MUTCD permits consideration of these advance treatments, but it does not establish a universal combination, spacing, or location for every site.

Device Where it goes What the MUTCD says
White speed-hump markings On the feature When used, they identify its location; the pattern depends on whether it functions as a crosswalk or speed table.
Crosswalk markings Across a raised crossing Required when the feature incorporates a crossing and functions as a raised crosswalk.
Transverse advance markings On the approach Optional; if used, eight white 12-inch lines in each approach lane, growing longer and closer together toward the feature.
BUMP or HUMP pavement words On the approach May be used alone or with advance markings.
Advance warning sign On the approach Appropriate signs may be used; selection and placement depend on the applicable standard and site.

How speed-hump warning signs fit

The MUTCD’s SPEED HUMP warning sign, W17-1, is associated with a vertical deflection designed to limit traffic speed. The sign family may use a SPEED BUMP legend. An advisory-speed plaque may accompany the warning sign. For a series of features close together, the MUTCD allows the advisory-speed plaque to be omitted from later signs after the first.

These provisions do not mean every speed table must have the same sign, plaque, or spacing. A sign layout must be checked against the current MUTCD language and the relevant state or local requirements; the presence of a raised feature alone is not enough to determine a universal installation plan.

In particular, do not assume that an advisory-speed plaque is required at each feature in a series. The MUTCD allows it to be omitted from later signs after the first when features are close together. That is a specific allowance, not a general instruction to omit plaques in every setting. The sign selection and any plaque treatment should be confirmed against the current revision and local practice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, the fact that W17-1 is the warning sign associated with a vertical deflection does not settle all installation details. The sign family and plaque options are described, but exact distances, sign spacing, or a single site plan are not prescribed here. Those details depend on the applicable provisions and the road authority’s decision.

Check the edition adopted where the road is located

FHWA identifies the current federal manual as the 11th Edition with Revision 1, dated December 2025. The 11th Edition took effect in January 2024, and Revision 1 took effect March 5, 2026. Consult FHWA’s current-edition page and the applicable state manual or supplement before specifying devices. States and local highway agencies select and install traffic-control devices, and local adoption affects implementation.

The FHWA 11th Edition MUTCD PDF is a source for the cited Sections 2C.27, 3B.29 and 3B.30 and Figure 3B-27. Because Revision 1 postdates the original 2023 edition, verify relevant provisions in the current Revision 1 material as well as any state supplement; an older printed manual may not reflect the latest federal revision.

FHWA summarizes why these details belong in the manual: “The pavement markings and signs used to warn road users of the physical features of the road, such as signs and markings for speed humps, are TCDs and are therefore covered by the MUTCD.” That scope does not make every federal provision a complete nationwide construction plan. State adoption, supplements, and local requirements still matter to the actual project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reference copy, FHWA makes PDFs available on its site, and hard copies are available through AASHTO, ITE, and ATSSA. A printed copy should be checked for Revision 1 currency. The relevant question is not just whether a project team has a MUTCD on hand, but whether it is consulting the current edition and the version adopted by the jurisdiction.

A practical review sequence for a project

  1. Confirm the design intent. Establish whether the raised feature is solely for speed management or is also designed to function as a pedestrian, bicycle, or equestrian crossing. The crossing function determines whether crosswalk markings are required.
  2. Identify the governing standards. Check the current federal MUTCD and the state or local manual, supplement, or project requirements that apply to the road. Do not assume the federal manual alone settles every placement decision.
  3. Choose the on-feature pattern. Where speed-hump markings are used, apply the pattern appropriate to the feature’s role, using MUTCD Figure 3B-27 where applicable. Include crosswalk markings for a feature that functions as a raised crosswalk.
  4. Assess whether advance warning is warranted. Consider the optional transverse markings, BUMP or HUMP pavement words, and an appropriate advance sign under the applicable provisions. If transverse markings are selected, follow the specified count, color, width, lane coverage, and progression toward the feature.
  5. Coordinate the sign details with the road authority. Confirm the sign legend, any advisory-speed plaque, and treatment of later signs in a series against the current manual and local practice. Avoid treating an example layout as a universal prescription.

That sequence separates three kinds of decisions that are easy to collapse together: what the feature is designed to do, which markings apply to that role, and which additional warnings are warranted on the approach. It also creates a clear point to check local adoption before a plan is specified or installed.

What the markings do not establish

Seeing white markings, pavement words, or a warning sign does not establish the physical dimensions of the speed table or prove that it meets a particular engineering design. FHWA distinguishes between traffic-control devices, which the MUTCD addresses, and the raised roadway feature itself, whose height, width, length, and spacing are outside the MUTCD’s scope. Those design questions need to be resolved through the responsible agency’s engineering criteria and project requirements.

FHWA puts the boundary plainly: “Speed bumps and humps are considered ‘physical features’ of a roadway rather than traffic control devices (TCDs), so the MUTCD does not address the height, width, length, or spacing of the actual humps and bumps.” A MUTCD marking or sign reference therefore cannot answer every engineering question about the feature.

Likewise, a federal manual reference is not an endorsement of a particular sign or marking product. FHWA says it does not approve individual devices as “FHWA Approved” or “MUTCD Approved.” Product documentation and agency acceptance requirements must be checked for the specific project rather than inferred from a product label.

The cited MUTCD provisions also do not supply a project cost estimate. Costs depend on a specific project and procurement, neither of which is addressed by these marking and sign rules. If materials are being purchased, confirm the agency’s specifications and product documentation rather than treating a supplier’s claim of federal approval as proof of compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Are speed-table markings required?

The MUTCD says that when speed-hump markings are used, white markings identify the feature. The section also provides patterns for a feature functioning as a crosswalk or speed table. The exact installation should be checked against the current manual and the applicable state or local standard; there is no universal layout for every site.

Are advance transverse lines mandatory?

No. MUTCD Section 3B.30 says advance speed-hump markings may be used where extra visibility is wanted or the vertical deflection is unexpected. If they are used, the described treatment is eight white 12-inch transverse lines in each approach lane, becoming longer and closer together as drivers approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can BUMP or HUMP pavement lettering replace the transverse lines?

The MUTCD allows BUMP or HUMP pavement words to be used alone or with advance transverse markings. Their use is optional, and the choice should be considered with the appropriate warning signs and local requirements rather than treated as a required package.

Does every speed table need a crosswalk?

No. Crosswalk markings are required when the speed table specifically incorporates a pedestrian, bicycle, or equestrian crossing and functions as a raised crosswalk. A table’s proximity to a crossing alone does not establish that role.

Does the MUTCD set speed-table dimensions or cost?

No. FHWA says the MUTCD covers the signs and markings used to warn road users, while the physical feature’s height, width, length, and spacing are outside its scope. There is no cost figure here; consult the responsible agency’s engineering criteria and project-specific procurement information.

The Bottom Line

Speed tables are identified with white markings when speed-hump markings are used; advance lines, BUMP or HUMP pavement words, and warning signs are options, not one universal package. A feature that functions as a raised crossing needs crosswalk markings. Check the current MUTCD with Revision 1 and the applicable state or local standard, and treat the table’s physical design as a separate engineering question.
