Choose your lane before entering a multi-lane roundabout by reading the advance direction sign and the arrows painted in your approach lane. Then follow the signs, arrows and lane lines through the junction. An arrow guides lane choice; a give-way sign or line controls entry priority. These are different instructions, and posted markings take precedence over a guessed “left for left, right for right” rule.
This guide focuses on UK road markings and signs, with a short comparison to official guidance in Australia. Roundabout rules vary by jurisdiction, so follow the instructions posted at the junction and the local rules that apply where you are driving.

How to read a multi-lane roundabout
Read the advance direction sign while you still have time to choose a lane safely. Check the arrows painted in your lane as you approach, then keep following the lane lines and signs through the roundabout. Do not choose a lane solely from a familiar convention or from a generic diagram: the layout and markings at the specific junction determine how its lanes are intended to be used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThink of the markings as a sequence of instructions. The advance sign helps you plan your position; arrows in your approach lane tell you which movement that lane serves; and lane lines in the circulating area show how traffic is channelled onward. A separate give-way sign or line addresses whether you may enter in the face of traffic already on the roundabout. Reading these features together is more useful than trying to interpret one arrow in isolation.

- Read the advance sign. Look for the destinations, exits and lane indications that match your intended route.
- Check the arrows in your approach lane. They show which movement or movements that lane serves at the junction.
- Follow the lane path. Continue in the lane shown by the markings and signs around the circulating carriageway.
- Respond separately to entry controls. Give-way signs and transverse lines tell you about priority at the entrance; they do not assign your lane.
In the UK, the Department for Transport’s Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 5 describes direction arrows as advance indications of the correct lane at busy multi-lane junctions, including roundabouts. The Department for Transport’s guidance on direction signs on all-purpose roads also allows signs showing appropriate lanes for turning movements on roundabout approaches.
The manual says arrows normally appear as two in sequence in each lane, and sometimes three. Seeing a series rather than a single arrow is a reminder to make the lane choice in advance and keep checking what is marked as you approach. Do not wait until the entry to decide based on where other drivers appear to be going.
What the signs and road markings tell you
Advance direction or lane signs
An advance sign may show the junction layout, destinations, or which lane is associated with a particular movement. Use it early enough to position safely rather than making a sudden move at the entry. UK directional signs can indicate the appropriate lanes for turning movements on a roundabout approach.
Match the lane indication to your intended destination or exit, not simply to the apparent direction of the road on a map. A sign may make clear that a lane serves a particular movement even if your usual expectation would put that movement somewhere else. When signs and painted arrows both appear, use the instructions posted for that junction and look for the lane path they establish.
Painted lane arrows
An arrow indicates the movement or movements permitted or expected from that lane at the junction. It is a lane-use instruction, not a signal that you have priority over traffic already in the roundabout. The UK road-marking manual says arrows provide advance indication of the correct lane at busy multi-lane junctions; it normally calls for two arrows in sequence in each lane, and sometimes three.

Read the arrow in your own lane. An arrow in a neighbouring lane does not tell you that you can move into that lane, and an assumed left, straight-ahead or right-turn convention should not override arrows posted for the junction. If a lane’s arrow indicates more than one movement, it identifies the movements served by that lane; it does not mean that the lane is available for every possible exit.
Arrows and entry controls answer different questions. The arrow helps answer, “Which movement does this lane serve?” The give-way control answers, “When may I enter?” Do not infer from an arrow that you can enter immediately, or that other traffic must give way to you.

Lane lines through the roundabout
Lines in the circulating area can channelise traffic and show which lane to use at and through the roundabout. Follow the lane path indicated by those lines. Avoid an unnecessary lane change in the circulating carriageway; if you are uncertain, do not make a sudden manoeuvre that cuts across another vehicle’s path.
These markings are important because the approach lane alone may not describe the entire route. A lane can be guided around the circle toward a particular exit, and the lines show how traffic is intended to stay channelled. Look ahead for the continuation of your lane rather than treating the centre of the roundabout as a point where you can choose a new path without regard to other vehicles.
If the lines show a path that differs from what you expected, follow the marked route rather than trying to force your expected route. Do not assume that a lane change is appropriate just because the next exit is close. The UK manual describes circulating-area lane markings as a way to channelise traffic and indicate the lane to use at and through roundabouts.

Give-way signs and transverse lines
A give-way sign or transverse road marking concerns priority at the entry. The UK Highway Code lists the marking for giving way to traffic from the right at a roundabout in its road-markings guidance. This is separate from the arrows that tell you which lane serves your intended movement: the arrow does not itself grant priority.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →In practical terms, identify the give-way control as you approach and treat it as an entry instruction, not as another lane arrow. A marked lane does not remove the need to comply with the entry control, and a give-way line does not tell you which circulating lane to use. Both may be present at the same entrance because they serve different purposes.
Chevron markings and splitter islands
Some conventional UK roundabouts separate a left-turn lane from the circulating traffic using a splitter island or a marked area. An advance direction sign may show that separate lane. The Department for Transport’s road-markings guidance explains that where chevrons are bounded by continuous lines, vehicles must not enter the marked area except in an emergency. Treat a segregated lane as a distinct layout, not as an invitation to join the circulating lanes.
A separated left-turn lane may take you around the outside of the main circulating lanes rather than into the circle with them. The advance sign is useful because it can show this separate route before you reach the island. Do not mistake the bypassing path for a lane that can be entered or left wherever convenient: the boundary markings tell you where the route is separated, and continuous chevron boundaries are not to be crossed except in an emergency.
Why lane rules differ by jurisdiction
Do not treat a lane convention from one country or state as a universal rule. For any roundabout, consider the signs and arrows at that junction, the local default lane and signalling rules, and any special layout such as a bypass lane, spiral markings or lane-specific exits.

Official Australian state guidance illustrates the difference. Queensland says drivers should use the left lane for a left turn, the right lane for a right turn, and either lane to go straight ahead unless arrows indicate otherwise. NSW and Victoria also direct drivers to follow the signs and markings, while describing their own general turn-lane guidance. Those state instructions are not UK rules, and they should not be combined into a single cross-jurisdiction rule.
The practical lesson is to separate two things: the specific instructions at the roundabout in front of you, and the default rules of the jurisdiction where you are driving. A general lane convention may help explain a typical layout, but it cannot replace a posted arrow or sign. Nor should a driver carry a default lane rule from one Australian state, or from Australia to the UK, and assume it applies unchanged elsewhere.
- NSW Government roundabout guidance says: “On multi-lane roundabouts, you must follow the direction of the arrows or signs on the road.” This is NSW guidance, not a universal rule.
- Queensland Government roundabout guidance sets out Queensland’s general lane advice and qualifies it where arrows indicate otherwise.
- Transport Victoria roundabout guidance tells drivers to follow signs and arrows, stay in lane and use the turn directions applicable in Victoria.
What to do if the markings do not match your expectation
At a busy or unfamiliar junction, the advance sign and the painted arrows may assign lanes differently from what you expect. Follow the posted instructions rather than trying to apply a generic rule. If you realise too late that you are in a lane that does not serve your destination, do not cut across lanes or enter a hatched area to correct it. Continue only in a way that is safe and permitted by the markings, then choose a safe route to turn around or reroute after leaving the junction.
Pay particular attention to continuous lines around chevrons and to lane lines that continue through the circle. A lane that is physically separated from circulating traffic may have its own exit path; do not cross its boundary simply because the intended turn appears close.
If the layout is unfamiliar, slow down your decision-making by reading signs while you still have room to position, rather than leaving the choice until the entry. If you miss the intended lane, the markings still matter: a late correction across a lane or a continuous chevron boundary is not a safe substitute for following the marked route. The guidance here does not establish one universal recovery manoeuvre for every roundabout; follow the local rules and continue only where the markings permit and it is safe.

Quick checks before entering
- Have you read the advance sign and matched your destination to a lane?
- Do the arrows in your approach lane confirm the movement you intend to make?
- Can you follow the lane lines through the roundabout without an unnecessary lane change?
- Have you identified the give-way control separately from lane directions?
- Does a splitter island or continuous chevron boundary separate a turn lane from circulating traffic?
- Are you applying the rules for the jurisdiction where you are driving, rather than importing a convention from elsewhere?
For UK drivers who want a printed reference, the Department for Transport’s Highway Code page says a physical book may be ordered; the Code is also available to read online. A book is a convenience, not a requirement for understanding the markings at a particular junction. Check that any edition or marketplace listing is current if you choose to buy a copy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which lane should I be in at a multi-lane roundabout?
Use the advance direction sign and the arrows painted in your approach lane to choose. Then follow the lane lines and signs through the roundabout. Do not rely on a generic left/straight/right convention when the junction’s posted instructions show a different lane assignment.
What do the arrows on the road at a roundabout mean?
They indicate which movement or movements are permitted or expected from that lane at the junction. In UK guidance, arrows provide advance indication of the correct lane at busy multi-lane junctions. They do not give you priority to enter.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do lane arrows mean I have priority over traffic on the roundabout?
No. An arrow is a lane-use instruction. Give-way signs and transverse markings concern entry priority and should be read separately from the arrows.
Can I change lanes while I am on a multi-lane roundabout?
Follow the lane lines and markings through the circulating area, which can channelise traffic and indicate which lane to use. Avoid unnecessary lane changes, and do not make a sudden move across another vehicle’s path to reach an exit.
What does a continuous line around a chevron area mean?
In UK guidance, vehicles must not enter a chevron area bounded by continuous lines except in an emergency. Some roundabouts use such areas with a splitter island to separate a left-turn lane from circulating traffic.
Are roundabout lane rules the same everywhere?
No. Posted instructions and local default rules vary. For example, Queensland’s general advice is left lane for left, right lane for right, and either lane for straight ahead unless arrows indicate otherwise. NSW and Victoria also direct drivers to follow signs and markings under their own guidance.
The Bottom Line
For a multi-lane roundabout, read the advance sign, choose using the arrow in your lane, and follow the marked lane path. Treat give-way controls as entry-priority instructions, not lane assignments. Where a separate lane or continuous chevron boundary is marked, follow that layout. Local rules differ, so posted signs and the jurisdiction’s guidance—not a guessed universal convention—should guide you.
