The best general-purpose answer is stainless steel screws. Use 304/18-8 stainless for ordinary outdoor moisture and 316/A4 stainless for coastal, marine, salt, pool, hot-tub, or other chloride-heavy exposure. No metallic screw is guaranteed never to corrode, so the grade must be matched to the environment and the joint.
The best general-purpose answer is stainless steel screws. For ordinary outdoor moisture, rain, humidity, garden use, exterior trim, and many woodworking projects, Type 304 stainless steel—often sold as 18-8—is the practical choice. For coastal air, saltwater, de-icing salts, pools, hot tubs, or other chloride-heavy conditions, choose Type 316 stainless steel, also commonly called A4.
No screw is guaranteed to remain corrosion-free in every environment. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not invulnerable: it can develop pitting or crevice corrosion, and it can accelerate corrosion in a dissimilar metal connected to it in a wet environment. The right choice depends on the exposure, the joint, the required strength, and the fastener specification.

Quick choice: which screw material should you buy?
| Project or environment | Usually appropriate choice | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor repairs and ordinary household use | Stainless steel, zinc-plated steel, or another suitable fastener | Choose based on strength, appearance, and moisture exposure. |
| Exterior woodworking, trim, garden projects, and ordinary rain | 304 stainless steel or 18-8 stainless steel | Confirm the screw is designed for exterior wood and the intended load. |
| Decking away from severe salt or chemical exposure | 304 stainless exterior or decking screws | Treated wood, sprinklers, pools, foliage, and wet service can increase corrosion risk. |
| Coastal air, salt spray, marine work, or frequent chloride exposure | 316 stainless steel or A4 stainless steel | 316 improves chloride resistance but is not a guarantee of unlimited service life. |
| Chemically treated lumber | Manufacturer-approved stainless or coated connector system | Do not assume that a generic zinc-plated screw is compatible. |
| Structural, high-load, high-temperature, or pressure service | An engineered fastener meeting the specified standard | A consumer stainless wood screw is not a substitute for a code-approved structural fastener. |
Why stainless steel resists corrosion
Stainless steel contains at least approximately 10.5% chromium. When exposed to oxygen, the chromium forms a very thin protective surface layer that helps prevent further corrosion. The layer can repair itself when the surface is clean and oxygen is available, which is why stainless steel performs well in many wet and outdoor applications.
That protection has limits. Dirt, salt deposits, stagnant moisture, tight crevices, chemical exposure, surface damage, and contamination from ordinary carbon-steel tools can all contribute to staining or localized attack. “Rust-proof,” “永久 rust-free,” and “never corrodes” are therefore misleading descriptions for any metallic screw.

304 versus 316 stainless steel
304 stainless steel: the sensible default
Type 304 is the usual choice for general outdoor construction and household work. It is commonly sold as 18-8 stainless steel, a trade description referring approximately to 18% chromium and 8% nickel in a 300-series stainless alloy.
Use 304 stainless screws for applications such as:
- Exterior trim and non-structural woodworking
- Garden structures and outdoor furniture
- General exterior repairs
- Decking in ordinary, non-coastal exposure
- Areas exposed to rain, humidity, and occasional wetting
There is an important distinction between the terms. “18-8” is not a complete engineering specification and does not, by itself, prove that a product meets every requirement for Type 304. For a critical application, look for a clearly stated alloy, fastener standard, dimensions, and mechanical properties rather than relying on a marketplace title.

Type 316 contains molybdenum, which gives it better resistance to chloride-related corrosion than 304. Chlorides are present in seawater, salt spray, de-icing salts, some pool environments, and other contaminated moisture.
Choose 316—or A4 in much metric and European hardware terminology—for:
- Coastal construction and salt-air exposure
- Marine hardware and saltwater-adjacent work
- Frequent contact with de-icing salts
- Pool and hot-tub areas where splash and chemical exposure are likely
- Wet locations where replacing a failed fastener would be difficult
- Some chemical or industrial environments, after checking compatibility
316 is not necessarily “stronger” in the way a project may require. Its principal advantage in this decision is improved corrosion resistance in chloride-heavy conditions. If the joint needs a particular tensile, shear, temperature, or fatigue rating, verify those requirements separately.
What to look for when buying screws
For a normal outdoor woodworking project, start with stainless steel exterior screws or stainless steel decking screws. The product description should identify more than just “stainless.” Check the following before ordering stainless steel screws:
- Grade: 304/18-8 for ordinary exposure or 316/A4 for severe chloride exposure.
- Dimensions: Correct diameter, length, thread length, and head size for the material and joint.
- Head and drive: Select a head style and drive recess that suit the tool and required finish. A good bit fit reduces stripped heads.
- Point and thread: Wood, self-tapping, sheet-metal, machine, and structural screws have different geometries. Do not substitute one type because its alloy looks suitable.
- Application rating: Confirm that the screw is intended for exterior use, decking, treated lumber, sheet metal, masonry accessories, or another specific application.
- Strength and standard: For engineered joints, verify the manufacturer’s load data and applicable standard.
- Quantity and consistency: Avoid mixing unknown grades in a joint or buying an assortment whose individual sizes and materials are not identified.
Decks, treated lumber, and exterior structural connections
Deck and treated-wood projects need more care than a simple “stainless versus galvanized” choice. Preservative treatment, moisture, salts, foliage, sprinklers, ponds, pools, and hot tubs can all create elevated corrosion conditions. A location does not need to be oceanfront to be corrosive.
Follow the decking, connector, and preservative-treatment manufacturer’s requirements. Where a joist hanger, post base, hold-down, or other connector is involved, use the fasteners approved for that connector and exposure category. A generic zinc-plated screw may have inadequate coating thickness or chemistry even if it looks similar to the recommended product.

Stainless steel is often recommended for high-corrosion-risk exterior connections, but coated steel can be appropriate when its specific system is approved for the exposure. Hot-dip galvanizing protects steel differently from stainless steel and can work well in many atmospheric conditions. It is not automatically suitable for submerged or buried service, and a light electroplated zinc finish should not be treated as equivalent to a specified hot-dip or engineered coating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen stainless steel is not enough: galvanic corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when dissimilar metals are electrically connected while an electrolyte—usually water containing dissolved salts—is present. The less-noble metal can corrode faster. For example, connecting stainless hardware to mild steel in a wet assembly can put the mild steel at greater risk.
Before combining materials, consider:
- The metals in the screw, washer, nut, bracket, insert, and substrate
- Whether the joint will stay wet or receive salt-contaminated water
- The relative exposed areas of the two metals
- Whether a coating, gasket, sealant, or isolating washer can reduce electrical contact
- Whether the manufacturer has approved the combination
Do not focus only on the screw. A stainless screw in a corroding steel bracket can leave the assembly unsafe even if the screw itself still looks good.
Machine screws, bolts, and threaded inserts
Machine screws and bolts require a more complete specification than exterior wood screws. Match the screw, nut, washer, and threaded insert by alloy, thread form, dimensions, strength, and environment. A 316 screw paired with an unsuitable nut or insert does not create a fully 316-rated joint.
For a safety-critical, high-load, high-temperature, or pressure application, specify the applicable standard and strength requirement. ASTM F593 covers stainless steel bolts, hex cap screws, and studs intended for applications requiring general corrosion resistance and includes multiple alloy groups. ASTM A193 applies to particular high-temperature or high-pressure service applications. These standards are not interchangeable labels for every stainless screw.

Search for ASTM F593 stainless fasteners when the joint needs standards-based hardware rather than a generic consumer screw. The supplier still needs to confirm the exact grade, property class, dimensions, and service conditions.
Installation: prevent stripped heads, seizure, and galling
Stainless fasteners have a specific installation hazard called galling. Under pressure and friction, mating stainless threads can cold-weld or seize. Once that happens, the nut may lock to the bolt before the joint reaches its intended preload, and removal can become difficult or impossible.

For stainless machine screws, bolts, nuts, and threaded inserts:
- Keep the threads clean and inspect them for damage before assembly.
- Start nuts and screws by hand so cross-threading is detected early.
- Avoid excessive speed, impact driving, and repeated tightening and loosening.
- Use the manufacturer’s recommended assembly lubricant or an appropriate stainless steel anti-seize where the application permits it.
- Keep lubricant off surfaces where it would compromise a seal, bonding system, electrical connection, or specified friction requirement.
- Use the manufacturer’s torque guidance for the exact fastener, finish, lubricant, and joint.
There is no universal stainless-steel torque value. Friction changes substantially with lubricant, surface finish, thread condition, and assembly method. Do not copy a torque number from an unrelated table for a safety-critical joint.
For ordinary wood screws, the main practical concerns are a properly fitting bit, controlled driving speed, correct pilot holes where needed, and avoiding overdriving the head. Stainless screws can be less forgiving than hardened construction screws, so predrilling dense hardwoods and using the correct driver setting can prevent broken or stripped fasteners.
Coated and galvanized screws versus stainless steel
Stainless is not always the best answer. Coated or galvanized steel may offer greater strength, lower cost, or better availability. The choice depends on the environment and on whether the coating is an engineered system with a stated exposure limit.
Use caution with broad labels such as “weather-resistant,” “rust-resistant,” or “outdoor.” Ask what coating was used, how thick or qualified it is, and whether it is approved for treated lumber, marine exposure, burial, immersion, or the particular connector. A coating can be damaged during driving or cutting, exposing the underlying steel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Visible rust on a stainless screw: what happened?
Orange staining does not automatically prove that the screw alloy is unsuitable. Stainless hardware can be contaminated by carbon-steel particles from fabrication, storage, wire brushes, cutting tools, or nearby grinding. Those particles can rust on the surface.
Other possibilities include:
- The product was a lower-grade alloy than advertised.
- The environment caused localized pitting or crevice corrosion.
- Salt or chemical deposits remained on the surface.
- The screw was paired with a corroding dissimilar metal.
- Moisture was trapped beneath a washer, in a recess, or inside a joint.
Clean contamination with a method approved for the alloy and finish; do not scrub stainless with ordinary carbon-steel tools. If a structural or marine fastener is corroding, investigate the material, joint design, exposure, and metal pairing rather than simply painting over the evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
What screws are best for ordinary outdoor use?
Use 304 stainless steel, commonly sold as 18-8, for ordinary rain, humidity, garden projects, exterior trim, and many non-coastal woodworking applications. Verify that the screw is specifically intended for exterior use and the required load.
Should I use 304 or 316 stainless screws near the coast?
Choose 316 stainless steel, also called A4 in much metric and European hardware terminology, for coastal air, salt spray, marine work, de-icing salts, pools, hot tubs, and other chloride-heavy conditions. It improves corrosion resistance but is not immune to every corrosion mechanism.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Are stainless steel screws completely rust-proof?
No. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not permanently rust-free. It can suffer pitting or crevice corrosion, surface contamination, and galvanic corrosion when connected to dissimilar metals in a wet environment.
Is 18-8 the same as a fully specified Type 304 fastener?
Not automatically. “18-8” is a broad trade description and is not a complete fastener specification. For structural, high-load, high-temperature, or pressure applications, verify the alloy, dimensions, mechanical properties, applicable standard, and manufacturer’s load data.
How do I stop stainless screws from seizing?
Stainless machine-screw and bolt threads can gall or seize when friction and pressure cause mating surfaces to cold-weld. Keep threads clean, avoid excessive speed, follow the manufacturer’s guidance, and use a compatible anti-seize or assembly lubricant when permitted.
The Bottom Line
For most outdoor projects, buy clearly labeled 304/18-8 stainless exterior screws. For coastal, marine, salt, pool, hot-tub, or de-icing-salt exposure, use 316/A4 stainless. Neither is universally corrosion-proof, and neither replaces an engineered, standards-compliant fastener where strength or safety is critical.
