Its 1200°F rating is the manufacturer’s stated product rating—not independent comparative proof or a guarantee that the coating will remain flawless wherever flames make prolonged direct contact.
Which paint is suitable for a fireplace firebox?
Choose a coating whose manufacturer explicitly identifies it for firebox use and for your firebox’s substrate. Rutland says its 1200°F Hi-Temp Brush-On Paint can be used inside a masonry firebox. The manufacturer describes it as flat black and says no primer is needed.
Rutland states that the paint resists peeling and blistering up to 1200°F. That is the product’s published rating; it is not an independent comparison with other brands or a promise of equal durability at every point in a firebox. Rutland cautions that prolonged direct flame contact can blister or crack the coating over time, so those areas may need repainting.
Check the firebox before painting
Paint is for coating a suitable surface, not repairing damaged masonry. If you find chipped firebrick, cracked masonry, or damaged joints, address the repair before treating the job as a paint-only project.

These are repair materials, not paint substitutes, and their curing requirements differ from the paint’s. Follow the directions for the specific repair product before applying a coating.
How to prepare and paint a masonry firebox
- Make the firebox inactive and cold. The fire must be completely out, and Rutland directs users to apply the paint only to a cold surface.
- Prepare the surface. Remove loose or scaly material. Sand rusty spots with fine sandpaper. Rutland says to remove polish or wax with lacquer thinner.
- Stir the paint until uniform. Do not thin it.
- Apply the coating. Rutland’s product page recommends one layer. However, its FAQ recommends two coats, with one hour of drying after the first and 24 hours after the second. Because those official instructions differ, check the current can label or confirm the directions with Rutland for your product version rather than assuming one coat count applies to every can.
- Let it dry fully before using the fireplace. For best results, Rutland recommends 24 hours of air drying before heat curing the paint to 500°F. The manufacturer says heat curing is not required.
- Ventilate during the first firing. Rutland says some smoke and odors occur during that firing.
What to expect from the finished coating
The product is intended to provide a flat-black finish on a masonry firebox, but areas exposed to prolonged direct flame may blister or crack over time. Those spots may require reapplication. The manufacturer’s heat rating should not be read as a guarantee against this wear or as independent evidence that it outperforms competing products.
