A sports facility is an air-supported dome when controlled air pressure inside the occupied space holds a flexible membrane enclosure in shape. The pressure system, membrane, perimeter anchoring, access design and backup provisions work together as the structure; it is not simply a conventional building with a fabric roof.
What “air-supported” means
NFPA 101’s 2021 edition defines an air-supported structure as one maintained in shape by air pressure, with occupants inside the elevated-pressure area. That elevated pressure tensions the membrane and helps it retain its intended form. A sports dome therefore depends on maintaining pressure during operation, not just on the strength of the fabric. This differs from an air-inflated structure. In that arrangement, pressure in cells or tubes supports the enclosure while occupants are outside the pressurized supporting area. The informal phrase “inflatable dome” may not distinguish between the two structural systems. For a particular project, verify the code edition adopted by the jurisdiction and any local amendments rather than treating a general definition as an approval determination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe distinction is about where the pressure acts and how it supports the structure—not whether the building looks like a dome or uses fabric. If you are comparing proposals, ask the designer to identify the structural system clearly. A name such as “inflatable” by itself does not tell an owner whether the occupied interior is the elevated-pressure area. The definition also does not, on its own, specify the facility’s capacity, dimensions, pressure requirements or approvals; those require project-specific documentation.

How the dome stays in shape
Air supply and control keep interior pressure above outdoor pressure, maintaining tension in the membrane. The perimeter anchoring and foundation or ground interface secure the enclosure and transfer its forces to the site. These parts are interdependent: a membrane without a suitable anchoring strategy, or a pressure system without reliable controls, does not make a functioning facility. AirDomePro’s sports-dome overview
Typical system planning includes the following elements, although equipment and configuration vary by design:
- Membrane: the flexible enclosure that forms the roof and walls.
- Anchoring and foundation interface: the perimeter connection between the membrane and the site.
- Air supply: blowers or inflation units that provide the pressure needed to support the enclosure.
- Controls and monitoring: equipment and procedures for managing pressure and recognizing operating problems.
- Backup planning: standby power or another project-specific means of addressing interruption to normal air supply.
- Access, lighting and supporting spaces: operational systems that must be coordinated with the pressurized enclosure and intended use.
A 2019 Yeadon Play More operator manual lists a fabric membrane, anchoring system, inflation unit, standby power, pedestrian doors, airlock doors and lighting among its system components. It describes continuously operating fans and pressure-drop and power-failure safeguards. Those details illustrate one manufacturer’s arrangement; they are not a universal specification for every dome. Yeadon Play More operator manual

This is why the air-handling equipment should be understood as part of the building’s structural operation, not merely as ordinary ventilation equipment. The owner needs a defined plan for normal operation and for responding to a pressure or power problem. The cited sources do not provide one universal equipment size or backup duration: plant capacity, electrical needs, redundancy and procedures must be established for the actual dome and its operating conditions. A supplier’s manual can describe its own system, but it should not be used as a substitute specification for another manufacturer’s facility.
Why doors and emergency exits need special attention
Opening a large door directly to the outdoors can release pressure from the occupied volume. Airlocks or revolving doors reduce that pressure loss during ordinary entry by avoiding a direct, unrestricted opening between the dome and outside. The Yeadon manual describes both approaches, alongside emergency exits for emergency situations. Yeadon Play More operator manual
Routine entry design and emergency egress solve different problems. An airlock is not a substitute for a separate life-safety and exit plan. Door arrangements, occupant loads and emergency provisions must be reviewed against the requirements that apply to the facility and its jurisdiction.
In planning, consider how people will enter during regular use as well as how they will leave in an emergency. The operating plan should account for access management so ordinary movement does not repeatedly create an unrestricted opening to the outside. At the same time, pressure retention cannot be treated as a reason to disregard emergency exit requirements. The exact arrangement depends on applicable life-safety rules and the project; the cited operator manual is an example of one system’s access components, not a code prescription for every facility.

What determines the facility’s size and layout
Start with the activities and operations the dome must accommodate, then establish its footprint and clear height. A playing surface alone is not a complete space plan: run-off, circulation, entrances, player and spectator areas, equipment storage and support areas may also affect the enclosure. Required overhead clearance depends on the sport and intended use. AirDomePro’s sports-dome overview
Operating decisions belong in the same planning exercise. Season, operating hours, staffing, expected occupancy and maintenance capability affect the operating plan and the services needed to support the building. The project team also needs to confirm plant capacity, electrical needs, controls, monitoring and the approach to backup or redundancy; these are project-specific decisions, not values that can be assumed from a generic dome description. Apollo planning guide
A practical brief should therefore describe more than the sport and field or court dimensions. It should say how the space will be used, when it will be operated, who will occupy it and what support functions need to fit inside or alongside the enclosure. Circulation and spectator or player areas can influence the footprint just as the playing area does. Similarly, the intended operating season and hours matter to planning the facility’s services and staffing. The cited sources do not give standard dimensions or occupancy figures, so these should be derived from the project rather than copied from a generic example.
Climate, comfort and condensation
Site conditions must inform the engineering criteria. Wind, snow where relevant, temperature range, heavy rain and exposure are among the conditions to consider before design is finalized. Generic climate assumptions should not be transferred from one location to another; the applicable requirements and approvals need to be established for the actual site. Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Interior comfort also depends on the membrane and operating conditions. A thin, single-layer membrane can develop condensation on its interior surface in cold weather when that surface reaches the dew point. Insulated or multi-layer membrane systems and management of interior conditions may help address condensation and comfort, but results depend on the system and climate; they are not guaranteed by choosing a particular configuration. ACE Building Envelope Designs, August 5, 2026
These considerations are related but distinct: the site’s wind, snow, rain and temperature conditions inform engineering and approvals, while condensation is an interior-surface and operating-condition concern. A choice such as a multi-layer membrane may be worth discussing where condensation or comfort is a concern, but it is not a blanket guarantee. Ask how the proposed membrane and operating approach respond to the actual climate and use pattern, and review that answer against project engineering rather than assuming a generic dome will behave the same everywhere.
How to evaluate an air-supported dome for a project
There is no universally best sports-building form. Compare options against the project’s actual requirements rather than treating “clear span” or “weather protection” as a complete decision.

- Set the activity requirements. Define playing area, run-off, clear height, circulation, occupancy and support spaces.
- Establish the site design basis. Identify the applicable climate conditions, exposure, anchoring and foundation interface, and approval requirements.
- Test operational capability. Confirm that the owner can support air supply, controls, monitoring, access management, maintenance and a suitable backup strategy.
- Plan access and life safety. Coordinate normal entry arrangements with separate emergency-egress requirements and the code rules that apply locally.
- Compare environmental and operating needs. Consider intended season, comfort, humidity, condensation, maintenance capacity and expected operating continuity.
- Obtain project-specific engineering. Confirm the final geometry, membrane system, plant capacity, electrical needs and operating procedures for the proposed facility.
These checks help reveal whether the owner’s operating model matches the structural approach. In particular, pressure support makes continuity planning, monitoring, access and maintenance part of the suitability question. If the owner cannot support the required operating systems and procedures, the clear-span advantages alone do not settle the choice. Conversely, a dome may be worth evaluating where a large unobstructed sports area and weather protection are important and the operating approach is workable.
An air-supported dome may merit consideration when a large clear-span sports area, weather protection, flexible interior planning and continuous air-supported operation fit the project. Another building system may better suit a different permanence or operating model. Those are planning considerations, not a determination that a dome is suitable for a specific site. AirDomePro’s sports-dome overview
Useful comparison questions include how each option carries structural loads, whether it can provide the required clear span and height, what operating continuity it demands, and how its foundation and access arrangements fit the site and approvals. Compare environmental performance and maintenance capability too. The aim is not to declare one building type universally superior, but to establish which approach is compatible with the sport, site, operating season and owner’s capacity to manage it. Final geometry and engineering remain project-specific.
Maintenance is part of keeping the system operable
Membrane inspection and repair procedures depend on the actual material and manufacturer. The 2019 Yeadon manual calls for regular inspection and prompt repair of fabric tears, rips, holes and grazes. It describes minor heat-sealed repairs using a hot-air blower and seam roller, and recommends that a Yeadon service technician handle major repairs. That procedure should not be applied to another membrane unless its manufacturer approves it. Yeadon Play More operator manual
For an owner, the practical takeaway is to keep the supplier’s inspection, repair and operating instructions with the facility’s maintenance records. Do not assume that a tool or repair method suitable for one membrane is compatible with another.

Before buying equipment or attempting work, confirm the membrane material and repair method with the dome supplier. The manual’s advice to use a service technician for major repairs is especially important: a visible defect may require more than a minor patch, and the manufacturer’s instructions govern.
What the term does not tell you
Calling a building an air-supported dome identifies its structural principle, but does not establish its capacity, energy use, cost, climate performance or suitability for a particular sport or site. Those outcomes depend on the engineered design, local requirements, selected systems and operating plan. The cited guidance does not establish a universal performance or cost figure, so a project should be evaluated using its own requirements and documentation.

Is an air-supported dome the same as an air-inflated building?
No. In the NFPA 101 (2021) distinction, occupants in an air-supported structure are within the elevated-pressure area. In an air-inflated structure, pressure in cells or tubes supports the enclosure while occupants remain outside that pressurized supporting area. Check the applicable code edition and local amendments for a real project.
Why does an air-supported sports dome use an airlock?
An airlock or revolving door can reduce pressure loss during routine entry by avoiding a direct, unrestricted opening between the occupied space and outdoors. It does not replace emergency exits or the facility’s separate life-safety and egress planning.
Can any fabric repair kit be used on a dome membrane?
No. The Yeadon manual describes a hot-air blower and seam roller for certain minor heat-sealed repairs to its system, but membrane materials and supplier procedures differ. Confirm compatibility and the approved method with the facility’s manufacturer; major repairs may require a service technician.
How much does an air-supported sports dome cost?
The cited sources provide no universal cost figure. Cost depends on project-specific design and selected systems, and the sources do not support a general price or performance number. Request a project-specific scope and estimate rather than applying an assumed typical cost.
What should be checked before choosing a dome?
Start with the sport’s playing area, run-off and clear-height needs; site climate, exposure and anchoring; occupancy, access and approvals; and the owner’s ability to operate and maintain air supply, controls, monitoring and backup systems. Include comfort, humidity, condensation and intended operating season in the comparison with other building approaches.
