Lloyds’ Perth appliance auction was a short-lived sale that launched on 25 August 2025, not an opportunity that is still open. PerthNow reported that it included ovens, dishwashers and range hoods, with bidding starting at $1. That was a starting bid—not a guarantee of a $1 purchase—and Lloyds says a buyer’s premium is added to the winning bid.
What was in the Perth auction?
PerthNow reported on 26 August 2025 that Lloyds Auction House had announced 11 auctions around Australia featuring $12 million worth of appliances. The Perth event had launched the previous day, and the listed items were available only until Wednesday that week. The Perth report named ovens, dishwashers and range hoods among the items, but did not provide a complete lot list or final sale results.
The report said the sale attendees were offered appliances at a minimum 80% off retail. As one example, it cited a new DeLonghi oven in its packaging: a typical white-goods store retail price of $3,600 and a Perth auction price of $47. Those are figures reported at the time, not independently audited comparisons or current prices. PerthNow’s 26 August 2025 report is the source for the sale details and quoted comments.
Why the $1 starting bid did not mean a $1 final price
Lloyds’ general buyer guidance says a lot normally has a reserve unless its description says it is unreserved. An unreserved lot sells to the highest bidder, even if the bid is $1. A starting bid is therefore not a promise that the winning price will remain at that amount. Lloyds also adds a buyer’s premium to the winning bid; the premium varies by auction.

For a future sale, check the individual auction listing and its terms before bidding. Lloyds says those details cover the buyer’s premium, payment, inspection times, pickup deadlines and location. Its general guidance recommends inspecting items where possible; online lots have photos and written descriptions, and online bidding requires an account. What to check before bidding on an appliance
A low bid can still lead to a worthwhile purchase, but the bid alone does not show the total cost or whether an item suits your home. For any future appliance auction, work through these checks against the specific listing:

- Calculate the likely total: account for the winning bid and the auction’s stated buyer’s premium. Do not assume a premium from another Lloyds sale applies.
- Read the lot description: confirm the stated condition, what is included and whether the lot is unreserved. The 2025 report described its DeLonghi example as new and in packaging, but that does not establish the condition of every item in the sale.
- Inspect when possible: use the inspection opportunity, photos and written description to assess the particular appliance. Ask questions through the auction’s stated process if information is unclear.
- Check collection logistics: verify the location, payment rules and pickup deadline in that auction’s terms. Also consider practical costs such as transport and installation before deciding what you can bid.
- Compare like with like: compare the total auction cost with a current retail price for an equivalent appliance, taking its condition and included parts into account. The $3,600 and $47 oven figures were PerthNow’s 2025 example, not a current benchmark.
The cost-of-living context
Anglicare Australia’s 2025 Cost of Living Index reported that its modeled full-time minimum-wage worker had $33 left each week after rent, food and transport. In the same index, a modeled single parent on minimum wage had $1 left even with government assistance, while a family with two full-time workers and two children had $5 remaining each week. PerthNow quoted Good360 founder Alison Covington describing households without basic furnishings and appliances, and saying that people need more than shelter to live with dignity. The report did not quantify those comments as findings. Lloyds chief operations officer Lee Hames said the auction’s appliances were “brand new, completely unreserved, and starts at just $1 — so we’re sure every appliance will sell.” Hames also said families were increasingly treating auctions as a first stop for white goods and described shoppers as more comfortable with online auctions. These are comments attributed to Hames in PerthNow’s report, not independently measured findings about buying habits.
