TIG welding—also called gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)—uses an arc between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the workpiece. Shielding gas protects the weld pool, and the welder adds filler metal separately when the joint requires it. The process offers precise control and clean-looking welds, but it is slower and more demanding than many other arc-welding methods.
How TIG welding works
A constant-current power source creates an arc between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece. The arc melts the base metal into a weld pool. Shielding gas, usually argon, flows around the electrode and weld zone to limit contamination from the atmosphere.
The welder can feed a separate filler rod into the pool or, where the joint and application allow, fuse the base metal without filler. Torch angle, arc length, travel speed and current control all affect the puddle and finished bead. Gas continues flowing briefly after the arc stops to protect the hot metal and electrode; use the machine manual and applicable procedure for the correct sequence and settings.
The American Welding Society defines GTAW as an arc-welding process using a non-consumable tungsten electrode to establish a weld pool, with shielding gas and without applied pressure; filler metal may or may not be added. See the AWS Welding Handbook chapter listing.

What equipment is required for TIG welding?
A TIG station needs more than a power source. Its components must be compatible with the material, current range and work environment.
- Constant-current power source: Select a machine with the required output and polarity. An AC/DC TIG welder covers a broader range of materials than a DC-only unit, including aluminum work that requires AC.
- TIG torch: Choose one rated and cooled for the intended amperage range.
- Tungsten electrode: Type, diameter and tip preparation depend on material, current and machine.
- Shielding-gas supply: A cylinder or other supply, regulator/flowmeter and compatible hoses deliver gas to the torch.
- Work clamp and current control: Connect the work circuit as the manual directs. Current may be controlled at the machine, with a foot pedal or with fingertip control, depending on the setup.
- Filler rod, when needed: Match its chemistry to the base metal and service requirements.
- Protective equipment: Use suitable eye and skin protection, gloves and flame-resistant clothing, and plan for ventilation and fire prevention.
Match the power source to the electrical supply, connect the torch, gas, remote control and work clamp according to the owner’s manual, and read that manual before operation. Miller’s TIG welding basics guide describes tungsten options such as 2% ceriated for AC and DC use, 2% lanthanated for DC precision applications, and pure tungsten as a legacy choice that may start poorly on some modern inverter machines. These are manufacturer examples, not universal specifications; verify the electrode classification and setup for the job.

| Material or setup | General guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel, stainless steel and many alloys | DC electrode negative (DCEN) is commonly used; a DC-only TIG machine may be suitable. | Confirm polarity and parameters for the specific alloy, joint and procedure. |
| Aluminum and magnesium | AC is commonly used for oxide-cleaning action while maintaining penetration. For aluminum GTAW, AWS specifies an AC-capable machine and 100% argon. | Set up for the particular alloy and work. Clean aluminum oxide with a dedicated stainless-steel brush or suitable chemical etchant before welding. |
| Shielding gas | Argon is the common choice. Helium or argon/helium mixes can increase heat input and penetration in some thicker-material applications. | Gas selection and flow depend on the procedure and setup. |
A DC-only machine can cover many steel applications, but it does not provide the AC capability commonly used for aluminum and magnesium. AWS’s aluminum welding guide discusses AC capability, argon, oxide preparation and safety.

When is TIG welding a good fit?
TIG is useful when fine control of heat and puddle size, low spatter and bead appearance matter. It is used on thin materials and non-ferrous alloys, as well as visible or quality-critical work. AWS lists applications including aerospace, automotive and motorsports, sanitary piping and high-end fabrication.
The trade-off is productivity and coordination. TIG generally deposits metal more slowly than GMAW (MIG) or FCAW, takes more setup, and asks the operator to manage the torch, arc length, travel and—when used—the filler rod, sometimes while controlling current with a foot pedal. For heavy sections or high production rates, another process may be more appropriate, depending on the job requirements.

TIG or another process?
Compare the processes against the actual job rather than treating any one method as universally best.
- Material and thickness: Check that the process and machine suit the metal and section.
- Appearance and cleanliness: TIG often suits work where precise control and a clean bead are priorities.
- Productivity: GMAW and FCAW generally offer higher deposition rates.
- Skill and access: Consider the coordination required and whether the operator can reach and control the joint.
- Requirements: Follow the specified welding procedure or code where one applies.
For aluminum, AWS characterizes GTAW as a clean, precise option for thin or delicate work, while GMAW can be faster and better suited to thicker material or production. This is general guidance; alloy, joint and job conditions matter.

It can be challenging for beginners because several actions have to stay coordinated: holding a consistent torch position and short arc, controlling travel, watching the puddle and feeding filler when required. Current control adds another coordination task when using a pedal or fingertip control. Practice helps build consistency, but training and the correct procedure matter for work where quality or code compliance is required.

Miller’s beginner guidance suggests a torch angle of roughly 70–80 degrees and a short arc of about 1/16–1/8 inch, while cautioning against tungsten contact with the work. It also recommends practicing a steady puddle and consistent filler feeding. These are teaching tips from the manufacturer, not code-qualified instructions.

Start troubleshooting with the fundamentals rather than changing several settings at once. Contamination, moisture, gas leaks or poor coverage, incorrect polarity, unsuitable tungsten or poor electrode preparation can contribute to porosity, discoloration, an unstable arc or electrode burnback.
- Check that base metal and filler are clean and dry.
- Check gas connections and shielding coverage for the setup.
- Confirm polarity and tungsten type, size and preparation against the manual and procedure.
- Maintain a short arc and a sound work circuit.
- If a fault persists—or raises a safety concern—stop and consult the machine manual or a qualified instructor.
Miller’s troubleshooting guidance associates contamination or gas problems with porosity and poor bead color, and setup issues with unstable arcs or electrode burnback. Its example ranges are manufacturer starting points, not universal settings. Amperage, gas flow, AC balance and tungsten size depend on alloy, thickness, joint, torch and cup, machine, environment and procedure.

What safety precautions matter?
TIG has low spatter compared with some processes, but it is not risk-free. Arc light, hot metal, electrical energy, compressed shielding gas, welding fumes and fire hazards all require controls.
- Wear suitable eye and skin protection, gloves and flame-resistant clothing.
- Provide ventilation and exposure controls appropriate to the task and location. Welding fumes and gases can be hazardous; aluminum welding also raises ozone and other fume concerns.
- Keep flammable materials clear and control hot work and fire hazards.
- Follow the specific machine instructions and applicable workplace rules. A helmet or a single ventilation product alone does not establish that a workspace is safe.
AWS’s aluminum safety guidance addresses ventilation, eye protection, gloves, flame-resistant clothing and keeping flammables clear. OSHA’s welding health hazards and safety practices fact sheet covers welding-fume exposures and protective measures. For workplace compliance, check the requirements applicable to your location and task.
