Germany’s main framework for low-voltage electrical installations is the DIN VDE 0100 series, titled Errichten von Niederspannungsanlagen (“Erection of Low-Voltage Installations”). It is not a single wiring-code booklet: it is a large set of standards and related documents, and the relevant parts depend on the installation and work involved. [DKE]
What does DIN VDE 0100 cover?
The series addresses planning, installation and verification of low-voltage electrical installations operating at up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. DKE describes its aim as achieving safety and proper function for the intended use. It applies across settings including residential, commercial, public, industrial, agricultural, temporary, medical and photovoltaic installations. It also applies to additions and alterations to existing systems insofar as the work affects them. [DKE]
The series comprises roughly 60 standards, pre-standards, application rules and supplements, according to DKE. Its parts address different aspects rather than repeating one general set of wiring instructions.
- Group 400: protective measures.
- Group 500: equipment selection and erection.
- Group 600: initial verification.
- Group 700: special locations and installations.
- Group 800: functional and system aspects.
Which part concerns wiring systems?
DIN VDE 0100-520 concerns selection and erection of wiring systems. The DIN Media catalogue listing inspected identifies DIN VDE 0100-520:2023-06 as the current edition at that time. Its listed topics include wiring methods, environmental conditions, conductor cross-sections, voltage drop, fire prevention and cable fire behavior. Check the live catalogue for current status before relying on an edition date. [DIN Media]

Another relevant part, DIN VDE 0100-510, gives common rules for selecting and erecting electrical equipment, including safety measures, satisfactory operation for intended use and foreseeable external influences. DIN Media’s inspected listing identifies the 2014-10 edition as current at that time; catalogue status can change, so verify it directly. [DIN Media]
Does DIN VDE 0100 apply to every electrical system?
No. Some systems are excluded from the general series or governed by specialized provisions. DKE identifies areas such as railways, vehicle electrical equipment, ships, aircraft, mining and the electrical equipment of machines as examples. For a project in one of these categories, determine which specialist rules apply rather than assuming the general low-voltage series is sufficient. [DKE] [DKE]

Can you get the German wiring standards in English?
Do not assume that an English title means the complete normative text is available in English. DIN Media lists DIN VDE 0100-520:2023-06 as a German-language publication, although its catalogue entry also supplies an English translation of the title. [DIN Media]
DKE lists E DIN VDE 0100-100:2024-04 as a German-and-English draft based on prHD 60364-1:2023. The entry labels it a draft, not an adopted current standard. Its proposed subject matter includes protection against electric shock, thermal effects, overcurrent and fault-current protection, as well as planning, equipment selection, installation and testing. This draft does not establish that complete English editions of all DIN VDE 0100 parts are available. [DKE]

- Classify the installation. Identify its use and setting, and check whether it falls under a specialized area rather than the general low-voltage rules.
- Identify the work. Wiring systems, equipment selection, protective measures and initial verification are addressed in different parts of the series.
- Check publication status. Distinguish a published standard from a draft, and confirm the latest edition in the relevant catalogue.
- Confirm language and document type. A translated catalogue title is not the same as a full English-language standard. Establish whether you need the normative text or an explanatory guide.
DKE recommends VDE 0100 und die Praxis: Wegweiser für Anfänger und Profis, a practical guide explaining requirements with examples for planning, construction and testing. Such a reference can help readers navigate the subject, but it supplements rather than replaces the applicable standard text. [DKE]

DIN VDE 0100 is the central German standards framework to identify when dealing with low-voltage building installations, but the applicable requirements depend on the specific installation, task and relevant edition. Catalogue summaries describe a standard’s scope; they are not a substitute for its complete normative requirements. This is a standards-identification overview, not wiring instructions: conductor sizing or installation methods should not be chosen from a general summary without the applicable standard, project conditions and qualified review.
