Most rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol diluted with water, usually to 70%, but the two names are not interchangeable on every label. The reliable way to tell what you have is to read the active ingredient and concentration printed on the bottle. Rubbing alcohol is for external use only and is not the same as drinking alcohol.
What each term means
Isopropyl alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol, also called isopropanol, is a single chemical compound. It is one of several alcohols used in industry and in household products. Because it is a named ingredient, it appears on labels by that name, and its concentration is stated as a percentage of the solution.
Rubbing alcohol
Rubbing alcohol is a common product term for alcohol-containing liquids intended mainly for use on the outside of the body. The term describes how a product is used, not which chemical it contains. Rubbing alcohol commonly uses isopropyl alcohol, but a product sold under that name may use a different formulation or strength. That is why the same bottle label can answer the question for you, while the name on the shelf cannot.
Typical strengths
Strength is the detail most people miss. The two references reviewed for this article describe typical products as follows:

These are descriptions of common products, not a survey of the market, and they do not establish one best concentration for every task. Higher is not automatically better. Follow the directions on the specific label you are using.
Is rubbing alcohol the same as drinking alcohol?
No. Beverage alcohol is ethanol. Isopropyl alcohol is a different alcohol, and rubbing alcohol is not made for drinking. Poison Control and Poison Control’s rubbing alcohol guidance both make clear that drinking it is dangerous. Rubbing alcohol can be toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin, and it is flammable.

How to check what is in your bottle
- Find the product name and the line labeled active ingredient. Confirm it names isopropyl alcohol (or isopropanol) if that is what you expect.
- Find the concentration, usually printed as a percentage such as 70%. Do not assume it matches the common strength.
- Read the directions and warnings for intended use, such as the statement that the product is for external use only.
- If the label is missing, smudged, or does not list an active ingredient, do not use the product. Dispose of it according to local rules rather than moving it into an unlabeled container.
Label accuracy is not guaranteed. An FDA warning letter dated 2021-01-26 describes a case in which a product labeled as 70% isopropyl alcohol did not match that claim when the agency tested it. That is one documented enforcement case, not evidence that mislabeling is common, but it is a reason to read the label rather than rely on the product name.
If someone has been exposed
Swallowed or possibly swallowed
Seek medical help or contact poison control promptly. MedlinePlus advises not to induce vomiting unless poison control or a healthcare professional tells you to do so.
