Use the installation instructions for your specific swing and rope, and assess the whole setup—not just the knot. The support, hanger, rope, clearances, and landing surface all affect safety.
Why there is no universal best knot
A knot that works in one installation is not automatically suitable for another. Rope material and construction, the swing’s attachment points, and the way the hanger moves all matter. The available sources do not compare tire-swing knots in controlled tests or establish a universally safest choice.
Exmark lists the double bowline, swing hitch, and rolling hitch as possible knot options in its DIY tire swing article. Those examples are not a safety ranking or proof that any one knot suits every rope, branch, or swing design. Follow the instructions supplied for your particular equipment instead.
Follow the swing’s installation instructions
A manual for an M&M Sales Enterprises tire swing gives one product-specific method: pass a rope loop over a tree limb, run the rope through that loop, pass the end through the swing’s loop, and tie at least two tight knots at the tire. These steps describe that manufacturer’s product; they are not universal instructions for other swings or ropes. Read the full installation manual and check the rope manufacturer’s requirements before installing.

Inspect the entire attachment system
The knot is only one part of the load path. Check the support structure, hanger or attachment hardware, rope, and swing for compatibility, correct installation, and signs of wear. A product listing for tire swing hardware shows that purpose-made components are available, but a rope listing or hardware product alone does not establish that a particular combination is compatible or safely installed.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) specifically warns about tire swing hanger maintenance in its Handbook for Public Playground Safety: “Pay special attention to maintenance of the hanger mechanism because the likelihood of failure is higher for tire swings due to the added stress of rotational movement and multiple occupants.” Although this handbook addresses public playgrounds, the warning highlights why a tire swing’s moving hanger deserves attention.

Account for clearance, entrapment, and the landing area
Check that the swing has adequate space to move without striking obstacles, and consider the hazards created by ropes, openings, and the surrounding structure. CPSC’s home playground guidance addresses installation, maintenance, hazards, and protective surfacing. The clearance measurements in the public-playground handbook are for its stated public-playground context; do not treat them as universal dimensions for every residential setup.
A CPSC report on playground-equipment incidents from 2009 to 2014 describes rope swings as a single rope attached to a tire, disc, or ball. Among the rope-swing incidents examined in that report, entrapment was the most common reported hazard: 13 reports, or 59 percent. That figure describes the incidents included in the report, not the general likelihood of injury on a tire swing. Review the CPSC report for its scope and findings.

Before anyone uses the swing
- Read the swing and rope manufacturers’ installation and use instructions.
- Confirm the rope, hanger, swing, and support are intended to work together; do not assume a product listing proves compatibility or installation safety.
- Inspect the rope, knots, hanger, and support for damage, movement, or wear, and maintain them according to their manufacturers’ directions.
- Check the swing’s travel area for obstacles and entrapment hazards, and provide appropriate protective surfacing for the installation.
