“Salty refrigeration” is the informal name for ionocaloric refrigeration—a laboratory cooling technology that uses salt-derived ions to control a material’s melting point. The concept is real and may avoid high-global-warming-potential gaseous refrigerants, but it is not currently a refrigerator or air conditioner that consumers can buy.
The system demonstrated by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley used sodium iodide and ethylene carbonate. Under laboratory conditions, it produced a temperature span of about 25°C using an applied potential of approximately 0.22 volts. Those results are promising, but they do not yet prove that a complete ionocaloric appliance would be more efficient, cheaper, safer, or greener than today’s commercial systems.

The short answer
- Is salty refrigeration real? Yes. It is a published laboratory demonstration called ionocaloric refrigeration.
- Does it use ordinary table salt? No. The reported experiment used sodium iodide with ethylene carbonate.
- Does salt itself create cold? No. Changing ion concentration reversibly changes the material’s melting point, allowing a phase change to absorb and reject heat.
- Is it commercially available? No. Berkeley Lab lists the technology as laboratory-validated, patent pending, and open to licensing or collaborative research.
- Is it proven greener than a conventional refrigerator? Not at whole-appliance lifecycle scale. Its environmental advantages remain prospective.
The original popular explanation appeared in Hackaday’s January 6, 2023 article, “Salty Refrigeration Is Friendly To The Environment.” The underlying research was published in Science as “Ionocaloric refrigeration cycle.”
Why look beyond conventional refrigeration?
Most household refrigerators and air conditioners use vapor compression. A compressor circulates a refrigerant through an evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion device. The refrigerant absorbs heat while evaporating at low pressure, then releases that heat when compressed and condensed at higher pressure.

This is a mature, powerful, and widely deployed system. However, its climate impact depends on more than electricity consumption. Important factors include the refrigerant’s global-warming potential, leakage during operation, recovery at end of life, manufacturing emissions, appliance efficiency, and the carbon intensity of the electricity supply.
Modern refrigeration has already moved among different refrigerant classes, so it would be inaccurate to suggest that every current refrigerator uses an especially damaging gas. Ionocaloric refrigeration is attractive because its proposed working materials remain in condensed phases rather than circulating as a volatile, high-pressure refrigerant gas. Berkeley Lab describes the approach as a possible route to low- or zero-global-warming-potential cooling.
How ionocaloric refrigeration works
The key idea is not simply “salt makes things cold.” Salt changes the behavior of another material, and an electrochemical system controls that change reversibly.
- Ion concentration is changed. An electrochemical system moves or separates ions through ion-selective components.
- The melting point changes. With more ions mixed into the solvent, the mixture’s effective melting point can be depressed.
- The material melts and absorbs heat. During melting, the material takes in latent heat from the space or fluid being cooled.
- The ions are redistributed. The system changes the ionic composition again.
- The melting point rises. The material can crystallize at a higher temperature.
- Heat is rejected. Crystallization releases heat on the opposite side of the cycle.
- The cycle repeats. Repeated mixing, melting, separation, and crystallization provide refrigeration.
This is broadly related to other “caloric” technologies, but the control variable is ionic composition. Magnetocaloric systems use magnetic fields; electrocaloric systems use electric fields; elastocaloric systems use mechanical strain; and barocaloric systems use pressure. Ionocaloric refrigeration instead uses electrochemically controlled changes in salt concentration.
What role does the salt play?
The familiar analogy is salt spread on an icy road. Dissolved salt lowers water’s freezing point, helping ice melt at temperatures where pure water would remain solid. That is passive melting-point depression: the salt is mixed into the water and left there.
Ionocaloric refrigeration applies the same underlying phase-behavior principle in a controlled cycle. It does not merely add salt once. It actively changes the concentration and distribution of ions so that the working material can melt at one condition and crystallize at another.

The demonstrated material pair was:
- Sodium iodide (NaI): the salt supplying the ions.
- Ethylene carbonate (EC): the phase-change solvent whose melting behavior is controlled.
The choice of materials matters. “Salt-based” does not automatically mean environmentally harmless. Climate impact, toxicity, corrosion, sourcing, manufacturing, and disposal depend on the specific salt-solvent combination and the finished system.
What did the laboratory experiment achieve?
The reported EC–NaI system produced several notable results under experimental conditions:
| Reported result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pure ethylene carbonate melting point: approximately 36.4°C | The temperature at which the unmixed material changes phase under the reported conditions. |
| Eutectic transition: approximately 6.4°C | A composition at which the mixture reaches a particularly low transition temperature. |
| Latent heat of fusion: approximately 204.6 J/ml | The heat absorbed or released during the phase change per unit volume. |
| Temperature span: approximately 25.76°C | A measured laboratory temperature lift, not necessarily a 25°C drop throughout a refrigerator compartment. |
| Cooling power density: approximately 5.75 W/L | The demonstrated cooling output per unit volume of the tested system. |
| Performance: approximately 29.5% of the Carnot limit | A prototype-cycle result, not the coefficient of performance of a complete household appliance. |
| Applied potential: approximately 0.22 V | The electrochemical potential reported in the experiment; voltage alone does not determine electricity consumption. |
The temperature span is significant for a laboratory caloric system, but it should not be confused with proof that the technology can freeze food, cool a building, or maintain a commercial cold store economically.
Why the environmental promise is conditional
The strongest potential environmental benefit is the possibility of avoiding a conventional volatile refrigerant with a high global-warming potential. The research paper characterizes the EC–NaI system as having favorable properties including zero GWP, nonflammability, low toxicity, and environmental benignity. Those descriptions apply to the studied material system and are not a blanket guarantee for all electrolytes or salt-based cooling technologies.

Researchers have also suggested that ethylene carbonate could potentially be produced using captured carbon dioxide. If such a supply chain were genuinely developed and retained carbon in the product lifecycle, it might reduce the material’s embodied emissions. That is a possible future pathway—not evidence that the laboratory prototype itself was carbon-negative.
A fair environmental assessment would need to include:

A system with a low-GWP working material could still have a substantial climate impact if it consumes significantly more electricity or requires energy-intensive components. “No harmful refrigerant gas” is therefore an important potential advantage, not a complete lifecycle verdict.
Does less than one volt mean it uses almost no energy?
No. The low electrical potential is attractive, but voltage is not the same as power or energy consumption.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTotal electricity use also depends on current, electrical resistance, cycle frequency, membrane losses, pumping, heat-transfer losses, controls, and the amount of heat being moved. The approximately 0.22-volt result was recorded under the experiment’s test conditions. Berkeley summaries describe the demonstration as using less than one volt; neither statement means that a future refrigerator would consume only a tiny amount of electricity.
The main engineering challenges
Membrane resistance
Ionocaloric systems require ion-selective membranes or comparable separation components. Resistance in those membranes can reduce power output and efficiency. The research paper identifies improved membrane performance as a route to higher cooling power, but proposed improvements are not the same as demonstrated commercial performance.
Separation speed and efficiency
The cycle depends on moving or separating ions quickly enough to provide useful continuous cooling. A process that works in a small laboratory cell may be too slow, energy-intensive, or expensive when scaled to a refrigerator or air-conditioning system.
Cooling power and heat exchangers
A practical appliance would need pumps, heat exchangers, electrodes, membranes, seals, sensors, controls, and a way to reject heat reliably. The working liquid may be easier to circulate than a rigid solid caloric material, but liquid handling does not remove the rest of the engineering problem.

Durability
Commercial equipment must operate through many cycles while resisting contamination, vibration, temperature changes, corrosion, membrane degradation, electrode wear, and seal failure. Ethylene carbonate has favorable stability and cycling characteristics reported in the research, but additional work is needed to establish long-term suitability for cooling applications.
Scale-up and cost
Cooling a laboratory test volume is fundamentally different from maintaining a refrigerator compartment, freezer, supermarket case, data center, or building. Scale-up must demonstrate adequate watts of cooling, fast startup, continuous operation, manageable heat rejection, affordable manufacturing, and acceptable maintenance requirements.
System-level safety
Material safety claims do not automatically establish appliance safety. A finished device would also contain electrical components, membranes, electrodes, pumps, seals, wiring, and possible degradation products. Flammability, toxicity, corrosion, pressure, electrical hazards, and regulatory compliance would all require independent validation.

Products using lower-GWP refrigerants, efficient conventional vapor compression, thermoelectric cooling, heat pumps, or natural refrigerants may be available today, but they are alternatives to ionocaloric refrigeration—not implementations of the Berkeley research cycle.
What would prove that it is genuinely greener?
Before calling ionocaloric refrigeration environmentally superior, developers would need to show a complete device that delivers competitive performance over a long service life. The important evidence would include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Whole-appliance coefficient of performance, including pumps, membranes, separation, controls, and heat rejection
- Cooling capacity at refrigerator, freezer, HVAC, and industrial operating temperatures
- Thousands of reliable cycles with measured degradation
- Manufacturing and maintenance costs compared with mature vapor-compression systems
- Material sourcing, toxicity, corrosion, and end-of-life data
- A transparent lifecycle greenhouse-gas assessment
- Independent safety and regulatory testing
Until those results exist, the most accurate description is “promising low-impact cooling concept,” not “proven environmentally friendly replacement.”
Bottom line
Ionocaloric refrigeration is a real, inventive laboratory approach that uses sodium iodide ions to reversibly control the melting point of ethylene carbonate. It demonstrated an approximately 25°C temperature span and roughly 30% of the Carnot limit under laboratory conditions, while avoiding the need for a conventional high-GWP gaseous refrigerant in the tested cycle.
Its environmental promise is credible at the materials-and-concept level, but its practical climate benefit, efficiency, durability, affordability, safety, and scalability remain unproven. For now, “salty refrigeration” describes an important research direction—not a product ready to replace the refrigerator or air conditioner in your building.
