It can be a profiled sheet, a single-skin architectural panel, an insulated metal panel (IMP), or a metal composite material (MCM). Those options differ in construction and performance: a metal face alone does not necessarily provide the building’s full weather, air, insulation, or fire protection.
What metal cladding does—and what it does not
Metal cladding forms the visible exterior layer of a wall or roof. Depending on its type and the design, it may protect the assembly from weather, contribute to the building’s appearance, or include insulation as part of a factory-made panel.
Cladding should be designed as part of a complete envelope assembly. The metal surface is only one component; the build-up may also need a cavity, underlay, air barrier, weather barrier, insulation, fasteners, sealants, and flashings. The New Zealand Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Good Practice Guide: Profiled metal wall claddings explains that sheets are one part of the system used to manage air and water penetration.
Four common types of metal cladding
Profiled metal wall cladding
Formed metal sheets are fixed to a wall as part of a designed assembly. Profile and orientation affect how the system is arranged, while cavities, underlays, air barriers, fasteners, and flashings are among the details that need coordination. The cited New Zealand guide is specific to profiled metal wall claddings and its intended building context; project teams should confirm which local guidance and requirements apply to their own site.

Single-skin architectural metal panels
These panels are single metal sheets or coils rather than insulated sandwich panels. Substrates can include natural metals such as copper or zinc, stainless steel, and coated metal. The Metal Construction Association (MCA) notes that appearance expectations may go beyond code requirements, so visual acceptance should be made explicit in the architectural specification as well as the technical requirements.
Insulated metal panels (IMPs)
An IMP is a composite wall or roof panel with metal skins and an insulating foam core. Its factory-made construction differs from a single-skin panel, and its code compliance must be assessed for the project and site. MCA guidance states that IMPs must meet the building code applicable to the project.

Metal composite materials (MCMs)
An MCM is a factory-manufactured composite panel with metal skins bonded to both faces of a solid plastic core, as defined in the 2024 International Building Code (IBC) text reproduced in the MCA’s MCM certification document. The installed system may also include supporting extrusions, a weather barrier, insulation where required, fasteners, and sealants. It is therefore important to assess the complete assembly, not just the panel.
How to select and specify a system
Define the project conditions first
Start with the building’s location, use, exposure, design requirements, and applicable jurisdiction and code edition. These conditions shape material selection, structural design, weather detailing, and the evidence required for approval.

Compare the panel and its supporting assembly
For steel cladding, MCA identifies thickness, yield strength, coatings, and finish systems as variables that affect performance. Gauge alone does not fully describe a panel’s performance. Specify material and finish against the project’s location and purpose.
For any cladding type, coordinate the assembly and interfaces. The specification and construction documents should address the relevant items, including:

Make the comparison project-specific
When multiple systems are viable, compare their build-up and core, material and finish, structural evidence, weather-management details, fire and code documentation, appearance criteria, and installation requirements. Cost, maintenance, and environmental performance also matter, but should be evaluated using comparable data for the actual project. The cited sources do not establish comparable installed-cost, lifecycle-cost, or quantified environmental results, so they do not support a universal ranking on those grounds.

Requirements depend on the panel type, building, location, adopted code edition, and local amendments. The 2024 IBC provisions reproduced in MCA’s MCM certification PDF address MCM systems specifically—not all forms of metal cladding. They cover applicable wind-load resistance, resistance to wind and rain, durability, and specified fire-related evidence under relevant conditions; detailed requirements vary with construction type, height, assembly, and other factors.

For an actual project, verify the code adopted by the jurisdiction, local amendments, authority having jurisdiction, and product-specific evaluation. Do not describe metal cladding as “fireproof” without evidence for the specified product and complete assembly. MCA guidance separately states that IMPs must meet the code in effect for the project and site.
What to put in the project specification
A useful specification identifies a complete, buildable system rather than naming a metal finish alone. Coordinate the architect’s appearance criteria with the technical requirements and the manufacturer’s installation information. Where visual acceptance matters, define the expected appearance and review process; code compliance by itself does not establish that a finished panel meets an aesthetic brief.
For product selection, consult the relevant manufacturer, fabricator, or supplier documentation and confirm the proposed system’s design, local code compliance, and installation instructions. Product suitability and availability must be checked for the specific project rather than assumed from a generic product description.
