What Is Jet A-1 Fuel and How Is It Different From Other Aviation Fuels?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jet A-1 is a kerosene-type aviation turbine fuel used by many civil aircraft. Its defining difference from the closely related Jet A grade is the colder maximum freezing-point specification: −47°C for Jet A-1 versus −40°C for Jet A in the cited fuel specifications. Those figures are specification limits, not temperatures at which every sample suddenly freezes. Both grades are controlled by detailed requirements for volatility, combustion, corrosion, thermal stability, contaminants and permitted additives, rather than being interchangeable simply because both are called jet fuel.

The current ASTM authority, ASTM D1655-26, defines minimum requirements for Jet A and Jet A-1 and lists acceptable additives for civil and military engines and aircraft. Other designations, including Jet B, JP-8 and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), describe different specifications, military requirements or production pathways and must be assessed under their own approvals.

What Jet A-1 fuel is

Jet A-1 is a petroleum-derived, kerosene-type aviation turbine fuel. Turbine engines atomize the fuel, mix it with compressed air, burn the mixture continuously and use the expanding gases to drive the compressor and produce thrust. The fuel therefore has to remain pumpable at very low temperatures, ignite safely, burn cleanly and resist damaging deposits or corrosion.

Those needs are expressed as a specification rather than a single chemical formula. Jet A-1 is a mixture of hydrocarbons refined to meet limits on composition, volatility, fluidity, combustion performance, corrosion, thermal stability, contaminants and additives. ASTM’s current page describes D1655-26 as defining the minimum property requirements for Jet A and Jet A-1 and listing acceptable additives. A fuel certificate or batch document demonstrates conformance at production; it does not by itself describe every quality-control procedure after the fuel enters the distribution system.

Jet A-1 is widely encountered outside the United States, while Jet A is common in the United States. That geographic pattern is useful context, not a rule that aircraft can accept any locally available product. The aircraft flight manual, operator procedures, airport fuel system and applicable release documentation determine what may be uplifted.

Jet A versus Jet A-1: the key difference

The clearest distinction supported by the cited material is the maximum freezing point. A lower maximum allows Jet A-1 to remain fluid at colder certified limits, which can matter on long flights at high cruise altitudes or on routes exposed to severe winter conditions.

Grade Maximum freezing point in cited material What the number means
Jet A-1 −47°C The fuel must meet a specification ceiling no higher than −47°C; it is not a claim that every batch freezes at exactly that temperature.
Jet A −40°C The fuel must meet a specification ceiling no higher than −40°C under the cited specification comparison.

The seven-degree difference is a specification comparison, not a universal ranking. An aircraft’s approved fuel list, route, expected fuel temperature, tank-management procedures and local supply certification still govern the decision. Do not infer that Jet A-1 is automatically better for every mission or that Jet A is unsuitable for every cold-weather operation.

The freezing point is also not the same as the fuel’s pour point or the temperature at which an aircraft will immediately lose thrust. Ice crystals can begin to form as fuel cools, and aircraft systems and operating procedures are designed around certified margins. The relevant question is whether the fuel and aircraft combination remains within approved limits throughout the flight.

Jet A-1 properties readers commonly see

The International Civil Aviation Organization’s Sustainable Aviation Fuels Guide includes a typical Jet A-1 property table. The table cites ASTM International (2015) and ARAC (1998), so its figures should be read as a historical reference table rather than a complete transcription of the current D1655-26 text.

Property Jet A-1 value in the ICAO guide table Why it matters
Density at 15°C 775–840 kg/m³ Mass available for a given tank volume and a factor in fuel-load calculations.
Flash point Minimum 38°C A safety-related measure of the temperature at which vapour can form an ignitable mixture under the test method; it is not an in-flight combustion temperature.
Maximum aromatics 25% by volume Controls part of the hydrocarbon composition, which affects combustion and material compatibility.
Maximum sulfur 0.30% by mass Limits sulfur-containing material and associated combustion and corrosion concerns.
Net heat of combustion 42.8 MJ/kg Indicates the energy released per kilogram under the table’s test definition.

These values describe specification properties, not a guarantee that every shipment has the same density or composition. Testing uses prescribed methods, and acceptance depends on the applicable edition, certificate and quality system. A lower or higher measured value within the permitted range is not, by itself, evidence that one batch is safer or more efficient than another.

How Jet A-1 differs from Jet B

Jet B is a wide-cut aviation turbine fuel, meaning its formulation spans a broader boiling range than a kerosene-type fuel. The current ASTM D1655-26 page states that wide-cut aviation turbine fuel (Jet B) is no longer included in that standard and directs users to ASTM D6615 instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That reference boundary matters. It is not accurate to copy Jet A-1 limits onto Jet B or to claim that the two grades are interchangeable without checking the current Jet B specification, aircraft approval and local handling requirements. Jet B’s designation alone does not establish a particular freezing point, flash point, additive package or operational approval in the circumstances a reader may have in mind.

How military fuels such as JP-8 should be understood

Military turbine fuels use military specifications, additive requirements and logistics rules that can differ from civil fuel practice. A Boeing presentation hosted by ICAO in February 2009 labels JP-8 “same as Jet A1” in one comparison. That historical shorthand is not a complete, current equivalence statement: it does not establish that every modern JP-8 batch, additive package, test requirement or aircraft authorization is identical to civil Jet A-1.

JP-8 and related military designations therefore require the current controlling military standard and the aircraft or operator’s authorization. A civil airport’s Jet A-1 certificate should not be treated as proof that the fuel meets a military contract, and a military fuel label should not be treated as proof of civil acceptance without the applicable documentation.

The 2009 comparison is available in Boeing’s Detailed Requirements of Aviation Turbine Fuels presentation. Its date is important because fuel standards and additive controls can change.

What sustainable aviation fuel means

Sustainable aviation fuel is not one additional grade with one universal formula. SAF describes fuels made through approved production pathways, each with its own feedstocks, processing, chemical characteristics, sustainability rules and qualification limits. The relevant question is not simply whether a product is marketed as sustainable, but which pathway and specification authorize it for the intended aircraft and blend ratio.

ICAO explains that a drop-in SAF blend is compatible with conventional jet fuel when blended and can be used without adapting the aircraft or engine fuel system or the existing fuel-distribution network. “Drop-in” does not mean every SAF can be used neat, nor does it remove blending, certification or chain-of-custody requirements. The approved pathway and applicable rules determine the permitted blend and use.

SAF benefits and eligibility also depend on how the fuel is produced and accounted for. Avoid treating the term as a guarantee of one emissions result or as evidence that a particular unblended product is approved for a specific aircraft. Operators should rely on the fuel’s release documentation, the governing specification and the aircraft manufacturer’s or authority’s approval.

Why low-temperature behavior matters in flight

At cruise altitude, fuel tanks can become much colder than the air temperature measured at the airport. The fuel specification’s freezing-point limit provides a defined margin against wax-crystal formation and loss of pumpability. Dispatch planning, route latitude, cruise altitude, duration and expected fuel temperature all influence whether that margin is adequate.

Jet A-1’s −47°C maximum and Jet A’s −40°C maximum do not predict the exact temperature in an aircraft tank. Actual fuel temperature changes with outside air temperature, aircraft speed, tank location, solar heating, residual fuel and time at altitude. Flight crews and dispatchers use the aircraft’s approved procedures and fuel-temperature indications rather than substituting a generic internet table for operational data.

Specification compliance is only one part of fuel quality

ASTM notes that D1655 can describe fuel quality from production through delivery to the aircraft, but the standard itself does not define all downstream quality-assurance testing and procedures after batch certification. Storage tanks, hydrant systems, refuelling vehicles, filtration, water control, sampling and documentation are separate parts of the supply chain.

For a practical acceptance check, an operator or fuel provider should confirm:

  • The exact grade and applicable specification are identified on the release certificate.
  • The certificate, batch number and delivery documents are traceable to the fuel actually delivered.
  • Storage and refuelling equipment has the required inspection, filtration and water-control records.
  • Any additives, including static dissipater or icing-inhibitor products where authorized, are documented and within permitted limits.
  • The aircraft’s approved-fuel list and operating procedures match the grade and blend being offered.

A clean-looking sample is not proof of specification compliance. Conversely, a production certificate does not prove that contamination or water has not entered the fuel later in the logistics chain. Both points must be controlled.

Jet fuel is not the same as aviation gasoline

Jet A and Jet A-1 are turbine fuels. Piston-engine aircraft commonly use aviation gasoline, a different fuel category with different volatility, combustion and engine requirements. A fuel’s use in an aircraft does not make it suitable for every aircraft engine. Any comparison involving avgas needs the aircraft’s approved fuel grade and the current aviation-authority or manufacturer documentation.

How to identify the right fuel for an aircraft

  1. Read the aircraft documentation. Check the flight manual, type certificate data, placards and operator procedures for approved fuel designations and additive restrictions.
  2. Check the delivery paperwork. Match the grade, specification edition, batch or certificate number and supplier documentation to the fuel being uplifted.
  3. Confirm temperature and route margins. For a cold-soak route, use the aircraft’s approved fuel-temperature calculations and the grade’s certified freezing-point limit.
  4. Verify the supply-chain controls. Confirm that the airport or operator has current filtration, water checks, sampling and tank-maintenance records.
  5. Resolve discrepancies before uplift. If a label says Jet B, JP-8, SAF or another designation not listed in the aircraft documentation, stop and obtain the controlling approval rather than assuming equivalence.

Quick comparison of the designations

Designation or concept Supported description What must not be assumed
Jet A-1 Kerosene-type turbine fuel; cited maximum freezing point −47°C; ICAO reference-table values include 38°C minimum flash point and 775–840 kg/m³ density at 15°C. The reference-table figures are not a full current D1655-26 transcription, and every batch is not identical.
Jet A ASTM D1655 civil fuel grade; cited maximum freezing point −40°C. That Jet A is unsuitable for every cold route or that Jet A-1 is automatically preferable for every aircraft.
Jet B Wide-cut aviation turbine fuel now referred from D1655-26 to ASTM D6615. Jet A-1 limits or interchangeability without the current D6615 and aircraft approval.
JP-8 and other military fuels Military designations with their own standards, additives and logistics requirements; a 2009 Boeing comparison used “same as Jet A1” as shorthand. Complete, current equivalence with civil Jet A-1.
SAF A category of approved production pathways; ICAO describes qualifying drop-in blends as usable with conventional fuel without aircraft-system or distribution-network changes. That all SAF is one grade, approved neat, or usable at any blend ratio.

Bottom line for operators and readers

Jet A-1 is a tightly specified kerosene-type turbine fuel, not a generic name for every fuel burned by a jet engine. Its best-supported distinction from Jet A is the colder maximum freezing-point limit, −47°C versus −40°C in the cited comparison. Jet B follows a separate wide-cut-fuel standard, military fuels such as JP-8 require current military and aircraft authority, and SAF refers to qualified production pathways and blends rather than a single replacement grade. Safe use depends on the approved fuel, current documentation and quality controls all the way from refinery batch to aircraft tank.
