Japandi is an interior style that brings together Japanese restraint and Scandinavian warmth. It uses functional furniture, open space, natural materials and careful craftsmanship to create rooms that feel calm and welcoming—not empty for its own sake.
What Japandi means—and where it comes from
“Japandi” is a modern label for a Japanese–Scandinavian design blend. Its sensibility draws on Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian simplicity, often associated with wabi-sabi—an appreciation of natural imperfection—and hygge, the Danish idea of comfort and coziness. The label developed in the 2010s, but the affinity it describes is older: Japanese and Danish designers and makers have long shared an interest in pragmatic simplicity and skilled making.
As Wallpaper* design editor Jens H. Jensen explains, “Japanese [and Danish] design isn’t simple to try to be minimalist. The principles that make a room feel Japandi
Let function guide the plan
Start with what the room needs to support: conversation, rest, cooking, work or a clear route through the space. Choose furniture for useful proportions and straightforward construction, not merely for a minimalist look. Architect and Mim Concept founder Anh Ly describes her approach as focusing on “intentional, human-centered functionality and natural materials.”

Treat open space as part of the design
Clear floor area, uncluttered walls and breathing room on shelves are deliberate choices. A room does not become more Japandi by filling every corner with another accessory. Keep circulation easy and let a few well-chosen pieces hold attention.
Use material and craft instead of decoration
Wood grain, woven fibers, stone, handmade ceramics and the gentle variation of natural finishes give a restrained room depth. Favor useful objects with honest construction and keep decorative pieces that have a purpose or meaning. Craftsmanship—not elaborate ornament—does the visual work.

Balance restraint with comfort
Japanese spareness can feel austere if it is not balanced with warmth. Add tactile textiles, welcoming light and comfortable seating, while keeping the palette and number of objects controlled. The aim is a room that feels both composed and lived in.
Japandi colors, materials and furniture
Build the palette from warm whites, cream, beige, taupe and soft gray. Muted green or clay can add subdued color; charcoal and black work best as restrained accents. Keep saturation low and create contrast through material and wood tone rather than vivid pattern.

Pale oak, ash and birch bring lightness associated with Scandinavian interiors. Walnut or darker, charred finishes can add depth. Pair wood with tactile materials such as linen, wool, rattan, stone, ceramics, paper, glass, lacquered metal or marble. Let their grain, weave and finish remain visible.
Look for low-profile seating and storage, clean-lined tables and simple cabinetry. Choose shapes that show proportion and material rather than relying on elaborate detailing. A piece should be comfortable and useful as well as visually quiet.

How Japandi differs from Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian style
Japandi is not a strict historical category or a fixed checklist. It sits between two design traditions, combining Scandinavian usability and coziness with Japanese restraint, asymmetry and attention to materials. The balance varies by room and by the objects chosen.

These are tendencies, not rules: individual rooms can combine the traditions in different proportions. Wabi-sabi and hygge are useful reference points, but Japandi does not require a room to express either in a prescribed way.

How to bring Japandi into each room
Living room
Anchor the space with a low sofa or lounge chair and a simple wood table. Add one textured rug and a small number of ceramics or branches. Keep the route across the room clear and preserve open sightlines; avoid adding furniture just to fill unused floor area.
Bedroom
Start with a low bed, a calm wall color and natural bedding. Use warm, layered lighting and concealed storage to keep visual clutter down. Linen, wool and wood can provide texture without requiring a crowd of accessories.
Kitchen and dining area
Choose quiet slab or frame cabinet fronts, wood or stone surfaces and as much useful daylight as the room allows. Keep a few durable objects in view and give the rest purposeful storage. The goal is a workable kitchen, not an empty one.
Entry or work area
Provide one useful landing surface and keep movement through the space unobstructed. A woven or ceramic accent—or a single handmade object—can add character without crowding the area. For a work zone, prioritize a practical layout and clear surface space.

A practical way to make the style your own
- Decide what the room must do. List its main activities and the circulation space they require.
- Keep only what earns its place. Retain furniture and objects that are useful, comfortable or meaningful; plan storage for the rest.
- Choose a quiet base. Use a restrained, warm palette and let natural light and material variation create interest.
- Bring in texture selectively. Combine wood with a few tactile materials, such as linen, wool, stone or handmade ceramics.
- Check the balance. If the room feels cold, add comfort through lighting or textiles. If it feels busy, remove objects or simplify the visual field rather than adding another accent.
