Fish emulsion is a soluble liquid fertilizer made from fish-processing byproducts. It supplies plant nutrients, especially nitrogen, but its nutrient ratio and directions vary by product. Check the container’s guaranteed analysis and label before mixing or applying it.

What fish emulsion is and how it is made

Fish emulsion is made from leftover liquid from the fish meal and fish oil industry. In a University of Illinois Extension explanation, solids are strained out and the pH is adjusted to help prevent spoilage in the container; the finished material is mostly liquefied fish. University of Illinois Extension

What nutrients it provides

Fish emulsion is commonly used as a nitrogen source, but there is no single nutrient ratio for every product. Extension references give different typical analyses: Colorado State University Extension lists 5-2-2, University of Illinois Extension gives a 2-4-1 example, and NC State Extension also lists 5-2-2. These are reference examples, not guarantees for a particular container. Use the product’s guaranteed analysis to see its nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content. Depending on the product, fish emulsion may also contain calcium, magnesium, sulfur, chlorine, and sodium, according to NC State Extension. The label analysis is the practical guide to what a specific formulation supplies. NC State Extension

How gardeners use fish emulsion

Fish emulsion is a liquid concentrate mixed with water for application. Colorado State Extension provides a generalized mixing example, but dilution and application frequency differ among products. Follow the current label for the product and intended crop rather than treating a general example as a universal rate. Colorado State University Extension

Liquid fish fertilizer may help establish seedlings and transplants, according to University of Maryland Extension. Its soluble nutrients can leach more readily than nutrients in dry or granular fertilizers, which can make it less convenient for feeding plants over a long season. University of Maryland Extension

How to choose a rate and avoid problems

Use soil-test results to guide fertilizer choices, then follow the package directions. Utah State University Extension warns that liquid fertilizer can burn leaves when directions are not followed. There is no responsible universal dosage: the correct dilution and frequency depend on the formulation, crop, growing conditions, and label. Utah State University Extension

  • Read the guaranteed N-P-K analysis and confirm that it fits the crop’s needs.
  • Use the labeled dilution and application method; do not assume rates transfer between products.
  • Apply in light of soil-test results to avoid unnecessary fertilizer.

What fish emulsion can—and cannot—be assumed to do

Do not assume that fish emulsion improves germination, yield, flavor, or disease resistance unless evidence supports that outcome for the product and use in question. NC State Extension reports that initial studies did not support soaking seeds in fish or sea products to increase germination. The page identifies the underlying work as a 2004 thesis project and says the publication has not been updated, so that finding should be understood narrowly rather than as a verdict on every product or use.
