Egg-and-dart molding is decorative trim with a repeating row of rounded, egg-shaped forms alternating with narrow, pointed ornaments called darts. The pattern appears on architectural moldings and other decorative pieces; it is an ornament, not a particular material or molding size.

What does egg-and-dart molding look like?

Look for a regular sequence of oval shapes separated by slimmer, pointed forms. The alternation is the defining feature: a row of ovals alone, or a pattern of beads, is not egg-and-dart. The Asheville Art Museum describes the design as bas-relief ovals alternating with narrow, pointed, dartlike carvings (Asheville Art Museum).

The motif is also called egg-and-tongue, egg-and-arrow, or egg-and-anchor in the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus (Getty Research Institute). It is often associated with an ovolo, a convex molding profile, but the ornament and the profile are not the same thing. Designs can differ in their cross-section, spacing, depth, and scale.

Where does the motif come from?

Egg-and-dart is a classical ornamental pattern. The Metropolitan Museum of Art documents it on a marble architectural fragment from Attica, associated with the Erechtheum on the Athenian Acropolis and dated circa 421–409 BCE. On that fragment, the egg-and-dart row is framed above and below by bead-and-reel ornament; the Met notes that the piece would originally have been painted (The Metropolitan Museum of Art).

Where is egg-and-dart molding used today?

It is used as decorative trim on architectural features and in interior woodwork or furniture. Available product forms include wall and panel molding, crown molding, and insert molding. The pattern does not dictate what the trim is made from: current examples include wood, plaster, high-density urethane, and composition materials.

How do you match egg-and-dart trim?

When replacing or extending existing trim, compare the actual profile and intended application—not just the pattern name. Check these details before ordering:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Profile: Compare the cross-section, height, and projection so the new piece meets adjacent trim correctly.
  • Pattern scale: Check the size and spacing of the eggs and darts against the existing molding.
  • Material: Match the existing material where practical, and consider how the new piece will be finished and installed.
  • Location: Verify whether the product is specified for interior or exterior use. For example, Chadsworth recommends its plaster moldings primarily for interior components, while Pearlworks describes its panel product for interior and exterior use. Confirm the current vendor specifications for the exact item.
  • Availability: Check whether the piece is offered in stock lengths or made to order. Product availability and ordering details depend on the supplier.

Because egg-and-dart describes the ornament rather than a standard dimension or substrate, no single material or profile is best for every project. Choose the option that fits the existing trim, location, and installation requirements.
