CarbonCure is a concrete-plant technology, not a product that a homeowner pours into a mixer. A participating producer injects a measured dose of captured carbon dioxide (CO2) into fresh concrete. CarbonCure says the CO2 reacts with cement and mineralizes into calcium carbonate, which stays embedded in the hardened concrete. The resulting strength benefit may allow the producer to reduce cement while meeting the required performance.

The company reports typical savings of 15–25 lb (7–11 kg) of CO2 per cubic yard of ready-mix concrete, but those figures are portfolio claims, not a guarantee for every mixture. The credible number for a building is the global-warming-potential (GWP) result for its actual mix, supported by a product-specific Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), project testing and the concrete supplier’s records.

What CarbonCure concrete is

CarbonCure is an equipment-and-controls system installed at a concrete production plant. The producer receives captured CO2, meters it through the plant’s batching system and injects it into fresh concrete during mixing. CarbonCure describes the reaction as mineralization: the gas reacts with cement chemistry to form solid calcium carbonate particles that become part of the concrete matrix. See the producer-side explanation at CarbonCure’s carbon-utilization page.

That distinction is important for specifications and purchasing. There is no universal “CarbonCure bag” for a contractor to add to a wheelbarrow mixer, and a site crew cannot reproduce the process simply by bubbling gas into a batch. The technology depends on plant equipment, calibrated dosing, an approved mix design and quality-control records. A project therefore buys CarbonCure-enabled concrete from a participating ready-mix, precast, masonry or other producer.

The exact environmental result depends on the cementitious content, the injected quantity, the source and accounting treatment of the CO2, the supplier’s process and the project’s performance requirements. A technology label alone does not establish a particular slab, wall or precast member’s carbon footprint.

How the mineralization process works

  1. Captured CO2 is delivered to the plant. CarbonCure says the gas is captured and supplied to the concrete producer; the source and eligibility of that gas should be documented for the project’s carbon accounting.
  2. The plant doses the gas during mixing. A retrofit or installed CarbonCure system connects to the batching controls and injects a precisely measured amount into fresh concrete. The dose is selected for the approved mix rather than guessed at the job site.
  3. The CO2 mineralizes. CarbonCure says the injected gas reacts with cement to form calcium carbonate. The mineral is embedded in the concrete instead of remaining as free gas.
  4. The mix may use less cement. According to CarbonCure, the mineralization reaction improves compressive strength. That margin can let a producer lower cementitious content while still meeting the specified strength, durability and workability requirements. Whether a reduction is possible is a mix-design decision, not an automatic feature of every order.
  5. The producer verifies the finished concrete. Batch records, strength tests and the approved submittal establish whether the delivered concrete meets the project specification. Those records also identify the mix and dose used to support an EPD or other GWP calculation.

CarbonCure’s technical explainer states that mineralization can enable lower cement content “without compromising the concrete’s quality.” That is a company statement; the engineer of record and testing laboratory still have to verify compliance for the actual project. The company’s technical archive includes a Type S admixture datasheet referencing ASTM C494, updated October 2024, as well as material on measuring mineralization and carbonation: technical information archive.

How this can reduce embodied carbon

Embodied carbon is the greenhouse-gas impact associated with producing, transporting, installing, maintaining and eventually disposing of a material, rather than the energy a building uses while occupied. For concrete, cement manufacture is usually a major contributor because producing clinker requires high-temperature processing and releases process CO2.

CarbonCure identifies two mechanisms behind its claimed reduction:

  • Mineral storage: some post-industrial CO2 is converted to calcium carbonate and remains in the concrete.
  • Cement reduction: the strength contribution from mineralization may allow less cementitious material in the mix, avoiding emissions associated with that material.

Global warming potential (GWP) is the life-cycle-assessment measure used to add up greenhouse-gas effects. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified document that reports those impacts under stated rules, boundaries and declared units. CarbonCure explains the relationship in its GWP explainer.

For a design decision, compare EPDs for the actual products rather than applying a headline percentage to the whole building. The EPDs must use compatible life-cycle stages, declared units and product scopes. A cubic-yard result for one ready-mix formulation cannot be transferred directly to a precast element, a different strength class or a project in another electricity and transport region.

CarbonCure’s reported savings by product line

The following ranges are reported by CarbonCure on its producer and end-user pages. They are not independently established guarantees for every supplier or mix.

Product line CarbonCure-reported reduction How to use the figure
Ready mix 15–25 lb CO2 per cubic yard (7–11 kg per cubic meter) Use only as an indicative company range; obtain the supplier’s mix-specific GWP.
Precast 20–30 lb CO2 per cubic yard (12–18 kg per cubic meter) Precast geometry, curing and mix design can change the result; verify the element’s documentation.
Reclaimed-water technology 10–25 lb CO2 per cubic yard (5–11 kg per cubic meter) This is a separate CarbonCure product-line claim that may be combined with other measures where the producer supports it.
Masonry 1 lb CO2 per 30 standard blocks (0.5 kg per 30 blocks) Apply only to the stated block count and the producer’s documented product.

CarbonCure says most ready-mix producers in its global portfolio enable a 3–5% reduction in CO2 emissions, with savings that may reach 10% or more when its reclaimed-water technology is stacked with the concrete system. Those are vendor-reported portfolio figures, not a universal percentage for a project.

A CarbonCure case study about PanUnited reports 15 kg of CO2 savings per cubic meter (25 lb per cubic yard) and a 4–6% reduction in GWP. It describes 45,000 cubic yards produced over eight months using a 5% binder reduction and an optimized CO2 dose. These numbers come from that company case study, available at the PanUnited case study; they should not be presented as a benchmark that every project will achieve.

What the savings numbers do—and do not—prove

A claimed pounds-per-yard reduction is an intensity figure. To estimate a project total, a team would need the actual volume, the approved mix, the supplier’s dose and the accounting boundary used for the calculation. Multiplying a portfolio range by total concrete volume without checking those inputs can materially overstate or understate the result.

Likewise, “CO2 mineralized” is not the same as “the concrete is carbon neutral.” Cement manufacture, aggregate production, electricity, transport, water, reinforcing steel and construction activities still contribute to life-cycle GWP. A lower-carbon mix can be valuable without eliminating all emissions.

Percentages also depend on the baseline. A 5% binder reduction compared with one supplier’s conventional mix is not automatically a 5% reduction compared with another supplier’s low-clinker cement, supplementary cementitious materials or locally sourced aggregate. Require the baseline and calculation method alongside the percentage.

Standards, EPDs and performance evidence

Verra’s VM0043 CO2 Utilization in Concrete Production, version 1.1 provides a methodology for accounting for waste CO2 incorporated into concrete and permanently embedded. It is an accounting framework for the activity; it does not certify the GWP, strength or durability of every CarbonCure mix.

For structural or durability-critical work, the controlling evidence remains the project’s specification and testing. The design and quality-control team should check:

  • the proposed mix proportions and cementitious-material breakdown;
  • specified compressive strength at the required age;
  • durability exposure classes, permeability or other project limits;
  • batch records showing the CO2 dose and production date;
  • strength, air-content, slump and temperature tests required by the specification; and
  • an EPD or life-cycle calculation covering the delivered mix and declared unit.

No independent, project-specific comparative test report or comparative EPD is established by the materials cited here. Ask the producer and engineer for that evidence before quoting a precise reduction in a bid, sustainability report or planning submission.

How to specify and procure CarbonCure concrete

1. Confirm local supply before changing the design

Start with CarbonCure’s end-user guidance at Reduce Embodied Carbon, then contact producers serving the project’s delivery area. Availability is local and project-dependent. A supplier may support ready mix but not precast or masonry, or may offer the technology only at selected plants.

2. Define the performance requirements

Give the producer the required strength class, placement method, exposure conditions, finish, schedule and any limits on cementitious materials or supplementary cementitious materials. The producer can then propose a CarbonCure-enabled mix that is tested against the same requirements as the conventional alternative.

3. Request comparable carbon documentation

Ask for the product-specific EPD, declared unit, life-cycle stages and baseline assumptions. Confirm whether the stated reduction includes mineralized CO2, avoided cement, transport changes or all of those items. Compare documents using aligned scopes; otherwise the apparent difference may be an accounting artifact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Review the submittal with the engineer

The engineer of record should approve the mix design, test data and any proposed substitution. A sustainability consultant can review the EPD and GWP calculation, while the contractor confirms that dispatch, pumping, curing and inspection procedures work with the proposed concrete.

5. Preserve delivery and verification records

Keep the approved mix, plant batch tickets, CO2-dosing records, test results and EPD with the project closeout documents. Those records support certification, future claims and troubleshooting if the delivered concrete differs from the submittal.

How to compare CarbonCure with another low-carbon concrete

CarbonCure should be evaluated as one option in a mix-and-supply decision, not as a substitute for comparing actual products. Use the following checklist:

Comparison question Evidence to request Why it matters
What is the product-specific GWP? Current EPD with declared unit and life-cycle boundaries It converts a technology claim into a comparable impact for the delivered product.
What creates the reduction? Cementitious-content table, CO2 dose and baseline mix Separates avoided cement from mineral storage and prevents double counting.
Does the mix meet performance requirements? Approved submittal and strength/durability test results Carbon savings cannot compensate for a mix that fails structural or durability criteria.
How is mineralization accounted for? CO2 source, quantity, allocation and accounting method Different boundaries can produce different reported reductions for similar concrete.
Can the project obtain it reliably? Plant location, lead time, delivery capacity and contingency plan Transport and supply interruptions can erase practical or environmental advantages.
What will it cost? Producer’s delivered-concrete quotation and any testing or documentation fees There is no universal CarbonCure price; local mix, freight, volume and specification determine the commercial result.

Common misconceptions and failure points

“I can add it to concrete on site.”

Not in the way the technology is designed. The injection system, dosing controls and mix approval belong at the production plant. Order the concrete from a participating producer rather than purchasing an unverified additive.

“Every CarbonCure load saves the same amount.”

No. The company’s ranges vary by product line, and the dose, binder reduction, strength class and baseline determine the result. Treat the ranges as orientation until the supplier provides mix-specific evidence.

“A Verra methodology certifies my concrete automatically.”

VM0043 v1.1 supplies an accounting methodology for CO2 utilization in concrete. It does not replace the project’s EPD, mix approval or performance testing.

“A lower GWP means no other specification review is needed.”

Concrete still has to satisfy strength, durability, workability, curing and placement requirements. Involve the engineer and quality-control team before approving a substitution.

Bottom line

CarbonCure reduces potential concrete embodied carbon through plant-controlled CO2 mineralization and, where the mix permits, lower cement content. The technology is credible as a production approach, but its 15–25 lb-per-cubic-yard ready-mix range, percentage reductions and case-study results are company-reported. For a defensible project claim, select a local supplier, approve the actual mix, compare compatible EPDs and retain testing and dosing records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a homeowner use CarbonCure in a small site-mixed project?

CarbonCure is installed at participating concrete plants and is supplied through those producers. It is not a consumer product intended for adding to a small on-site mixer.

Does mineralized CO2 remain in the concrete?

CarbonCure says the injected gas reacts into solid calcium carbonate embedded in the concrete. Verra’s VM0043 methodology addresses permanent embedding for accounting, while a project should still document the specific source and calculation boundary.

Is CarbonCure concrete carbon-neutral?

No automatic carbon-neutral designation follows from using the technology. The concrete still has emissions from cement, aggregates, energy, transport and construction; an EPD or life-cycle assessment is needed to quantify the net GWP.

What should be requested from a supplier before specifying it?

Request the proposed mix design, performance test results, CO2-dose and batch documentation, a product-specific EPD with declared unit and boundaries, and confirmation of plant capacity and delivery availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can CarbonCure be used in structural concrete?

A CarbonCure-enabled mix can be considered where the producer and engineer demonstrate compliance with the project’s strength, durability and applicable specification requirements. The technology label does not replace that approval.
