Its core uses thin, uniform 1/16-inch birch veneers assembled with a two-step lamination process. The result is a solid hardwood veneer core intended to provide an attractive exposed edge, consistent thickness, high strength and clean machining for furniture, cabinetry, fixtures and architectural interiors.
How ApplePly is constructed
ApplePly uses 1/16-inch birch inner plies rather than a conventional thick-block core. States Industries first laminates those inner plies into a blank. Surface knots or splits are puttied, and the blank is sanded to a calibrated tolerance. Face and back veneers are then applied.
This two-step sequence is intended to improve surface smoothness and thickness consistency compared with a conventional one-step layup. Because the core is made from thin, uniform hardwood veneers, the panel can be machined while retaining a visually clean edge.
What makes the edge distinctive
Most plywood edges reveal a stack of core layers that may need edge banding or a separate treatment. ApplePly is specified for an exposed edge: its closely spaced birch plies create a regular, furniture-like striped appearance. Designers can leave that edge visible, ease or profile it, or finish it as part of the design.

The visible edge is still a plywood edge, not solid lumber. Seal or finish it according to the coating manufacturer’s instructions, and make a sample first if the edge will be a prominent architectural feature.
Is ApplePly the same as Baltic birch?
No. ApplePly is a States Industries product and brand with a stated 1/16-inch birch-veneer core and two-step lamination process. “Baltic birch” is a broader plywood designation used by many suppliers. Some performance characteristics may overlap, but the names do not establish identical construction, grading, face species, adhesive system or thickness tolerance.

For a project that calls for ApplePly, verify the manufacturer, product line, grade, species and thickness rather than substituting a panel solely because it is marketed as Baltic birch. Conversely, if the specification only calls for Baltic birch, ApplePly may be a premium alternative, but confirm acceptance with the architect, engineer or owner.

For floors, shear walls, roof assemblies, rated diaphragms or other load-bearing uses, follow the exact ApplePly product sheet, applicable grading or certification, project code and the design professional’s requirements. Do not treat an attractive veneer-core panel as structural plywood without that documentation.
