The walls may be real adobe brick, or they may be stucco or other materials that imitate the look. “Adobe style” describes appearance, not construction, so the wall material has to be checked separately.
Adobe the material and adobe the style
Adobe is a building material first. Traditional adobe is sun-dried earthen brick made from soil or sand, clay, water, and a plant fiber such as straw or grass. Recipes and methods vary by place and practice. An architectural-style reference describes adobe as tightly compacted earth, clay, and straw shaped into bricks, and notes that construction varies with climate and local custom.

Over time the word also became a design label. House Beautiful’s explainer on adobe-style homes notes that contemporary materials may mimic the look of traditional brick. That means an “adobe-style” house can be built from adobe, or it can reproduce the visual language of adobe with other materials.
The City of Albuquerque’s Huning Highland Historic Overlay Zone Development Guidelines state the distinction directly: “The hallmark feature of the style is thick irregular rounded adobe walls, or alternatively, materials that simulate the effect.” In other words, the appearance is the defining feature, and the material is allowed to vary.

A working definition
An adobe-style house is a home whose design draws on Southwestern adobe and Pueblo or Spanish-Pueblo Revival forms, whether its walls are made from adobe or from materials that simulate it. Use this definition when you are describing a house to a designer, a realtor, or a builder. Do not use it to conclude what the walls are made of.
How to recognize the style
No single feature settles the question. The style is identified by a cluster of cues, and a house usually shows several of them together.
Walls and massing
The most distinctive cue is the wall itself. The City of Albuquerque’s guidelines describe thick, irregular, rounded walls, with earth-tone wall masses. House Beautiful lists cream, tan, yellow, and pink as typical exterior colors, and notes rounded edges throughout the building.

Roofs and parapets
Flat roofs are a common feature in both the City of Albuquerque guidelines and the ePlans catalog’s Adobe/Southwestern category. The City describes rounded or irregular parapets, which are wall extensions above the roofline. The ePlans category adds that some walls rise above the roof.
Exposed beams and porches
Exposed vigas are the most recognizable interior and exterior detail. The City guidelines describe exposed lintels, projecting viga ends, and timber posts and corbels. In porch ceilings, vigas support latillas. ePlans describes projecting timber beam ends and rough-hewn wood.
Openings and courtyards
Deep-set windows and doors appear in both House Beautiful’s and ePlans’ descriptions, and they create the shadowed reveals typical of thick walls. Many plans in the ePlans category also organize rooms around inward-facing courtyards, and House Beautiful describes outdoor courtyards as a common feature.

Fireplaces
Corner beehive or kiva fireplaces are associated with the style. ePlans lists beehive or kiva fireplaces as common plan features, and House Beautiful describes corner beehive fireplaces. These are descriptive tendencies rather than requirements.

Actual adobe or adobe look: how to tell the difference
Because the look can be reproduced, the wall material is the key question for anyone who needs to know what a house is made of. The appearance alone does not answer it.
Rank #4
| Aspect | Adobe brick wall | Simulated adobe wall |

| Material | Earthen brick of soil or sand, clay, water, and plant fiber | Stucco or other materials chosen to mimic the effect |
| How to verify | Construction documents, builder records, or an inspection of the wall assembly | Construction documents, builder records, or an inspection of the wall assembly |
| Thermal behavior | House Beautiful describes adobe’s thermal mass as absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night. This is a general explanation, not a guarantee of comfort or energy savings. | Not stated |
| Visual result | Thick, irregular, rounded walls | Designed to produce the same thick, irregular, rounded effect |
Ask for documentation rather than relying on photographs, descriptions, or listing language. A listing that says “adobe style” is describing a design choice.

The City of Albuquerque describes Spanish-Pueblo Revival as a regional blend of Pueblo peoples’ architecture and Spanish colonial architecture. It dates an early major work in the revival style to the New Mexico Building at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, and it says the style remains popular for new construction in New Mexico.
The revival movement is not the same thing as the older Pueblo building traditions it draws on, and those traditions are themselves varied across many Indigenous communities. House Beautiful places adobe building traditions in the Indigenous Southwest and also notes their presence in the Middle East. It describes modern adobe-style homes as imitating architecture popularized by Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest. Avoid treating the style as a single origin story. The words “Pueblo Revival” and “adobe” overlap in popular usage, but they should not erase the distinct histories and living cultures of Pueblo peoples.

If you are planning a home in this style
A catalog of house plans is a reasonable starting point for seeing how the features combine. ePlans maintains an Adobe/Southwestern category, and its plans describe common features such as flat roofs, deep-set windows, and courtyards.
A catalog plan is a design, not a site-specific engineering document. Its suitability for a particular lot, climate, or local code has to be reviewed for each project. Wall construction, including whether the walls are real adobe or a simulated finish, affects structure, moisture management, and insulation, and those decisions need qualified professional review. This article describes the style. It is not construction or structural advice.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the wall material in writing before you compare costs or performance.
- Check local zoning and historic-district rules if the house will sit in a regulated area. Overlay districts such as Albuquerque’s Huning Highland have their own guidelines.
- Have a licensed designer or engineer review any catalog plan before construction.
