A tool and die is purpose-built manufacturing tooling used to cut, shape, form or join material. In presswork, a die is designed for a particular part and operation; an upper die and lower die together make a complete set. The phrase also refers to the skilled trade of designing, building, fitting and maintaining this tooling—a tool and die maker is the person, not the die itself.
How a die works in a press
A press applies force to material held or guided by tooling. Depending on the die’s geometry and the associated punches, the press may separate material, pierce a hole, bend or draw sheet, or form it into a particular shape. A die is designed for its intended job; one tool does not necessarily perform every operation.
For example, a blanking die cuts a profile from sheet metal, while a bending die changes a workpiece’s angle. OSHA’s U.S. workplace-safety regulation defines a die in the press context as tooling used to cut or form material and says an upper and lower die make a complete set: 29 CFR 1910.211(d)(18). That definition is specific to press dies, rather than every kind of manufacturing tool.
Common types of stamping dies
Stamping dies are used to separate, shape or join flat sheet or section under pressure. The type selected depends on the part, material, required operations and production process. ISO 21223:2019 provides vocabulary for these pressing tools and operations.

- Blanking die: cuts a profile from sheet; the separated piece is the intended blank.
- Punching or perforating die: removes material to make a hole or other internal profile.
- Bending die: bends a blank or workpiece to an angle or shape.
- Drawing die: forms sheet into a recessed or cup-like shape.
- Progressive die: moves material through successive stations, with different operations performed along the way.
- Compound die: combines operations within one tool arrangement. Its exact functions depend on the job; it is not simply another name for a progressive die.
ISO’s terminology describes stamping dies as tools for separating, shaping or joining metallic or non-metallic flat sheet or section under pressure: ISO 21223:2019.
From design to production
- Develop the part and process design. Designers use CAD and analytical programs to plan the part and the operations needed to make it.
- Build the tooling. Diemakers translate the design into a physical die, then machine, fit and assemble its components.
- Mount the die in a press. The tooling is set up to hold or guide the material as the press applies force.
- Run production. Sheet or other work material is fed through the press to make parts in the designed sequence. The operation and arrangement depend on the specific die.

What a tool and die maker does
A tool and die maker is a skilled craftsperson who works on the production tooling. Depending on the job, that can include interpreting designs, machining components, fitting and assembling a die, making adjustments, and repairing or maintaining it. The work connects a design to a tool that can be installed and used in production.
The terminology is sometimes broader than press stamping: “tool and die” can also refer to specialized production tooling such as fixtures, gauges or cutting tools. In a presswork context, however, it commonly means the dies and related tooling used to cut or form material.

Why custom tooling matters
A die’s geometry and operation are tailored to the part and process. That makes it possible for a manufacturer to produce parts repeatedly to the intended shape. The appropriate tool depends on the material, part geometry, sequence of operations and production requirements; no single die type is best for every job.
