A diagrid is a triangulated structural frame, usually wrapped around a tall building’s perimeter. Diagonal members intersect to form a grid of triangles, often completed by horizontal rings. Unlike a decorative diagonal façade, a true diagrid is part of the building’s load-bearing system: its members carry gravity loads and resist wind and other lateral forces largely through axial tension and compression.

Designers consider a diagrid when moving structural work to the perimeter could improve stiffness, reduce interior columns, support a smaller or less dominant core, or give the tower a deliberate structural expression. The choice is project-specific. Diagrid geometry, connection nodes, fabrication, erection, fire protection, façade coordination, floor-plan requirements, height, and loading all have to work together; the system does not automatically reduce cost or eliminate a building core.

What a diagrid structure is

The term combines “diagonal” and “grid.” Terri Meyer Boake, author and professor at the University of Waterloo, defines it as “a structural system that is single thickness in nature and gains its structural integrity through triangulation” in her review De-mystifying Diagrids: Expressive Structural System for Skyscrapers (2016, published online 2018).

In a typical tall-building diagrid, steel or reinforced structural members run diagonally around the outside of the tower. Horizontal members, sometimes called rings or circumferential beams, connect the diagonal intersections. Together they form repeated triangular modules. The frame is generally one structural layer deep rather than a set of separate exterior columns and beams hidden behind a façade.

Triangulation matters because a triangle is geometrically stable: when its joints are pinned or semi-rigid, the members primarily develop axial tension or compression instead of depending entirely on beam bending. The pattern can be regular on a straightforward tower or change in angle and module size as the building tapers, twists, or steps back.

Structure versus appearance

A building may display diagonal lines without being a diagrid. Diagonal mullions, sunshades, braces behind a curtain wall, or a graphic pattern can look similar while serving a different purpose. To identify a diagrid, ask whether the diagonal members are engineered as a continuous perimeter load path and connected into the gravity and lateral-resisting system. The visual pattern alone does not establish how forces travel through the building.

How the load path works

Wind pushes and pulls a skyscraper sideways. Gravity from floors, partitions, occupants, façades, and mechanical equipment travels downward. In a conventional frame, vertical perimeter columns carry much of the gravity load while beams and moment connections, braces, shear walls, and the core resist lateral forces. A diagrid rearranges that work.

Lateral loads

Under lateral loading, the tower tends to shear and overturn. The diagonal members on the windward and leeward faces develop axial compression and tension, while the triangulated perimeter transfers forces around the building. This action can reduce the amount of bending demanded of conventional vertical perimeter columns. The horizontal rings distribute forces between adjacent diagonals and help maintain the module geometry.

Gravity loads

Floor loads enter the perimeter through beams, slabs, and connections, then flow through the inclined members to the foundations. Because a diagonal can support a vertical component of force as well as a horizontal one, the same members participate in gravity and lateral resistance. The exact force distribution depends on the module angle, stiffness of the joints, floor diaphragm behavior, core participation, and the tower’s shape.

The core still has a role

A diagrid can reduce the structural role or size of a central core in some designs, but it does not universally remove the core. Most tall buildings still need a core for elevators, stairs, services, fire separation, and often part of the lateral system. Whether the core is highly structural, lightly coupled to the perimeter, or supplemented by outriggers is a design decision established through analysis rather than a defining rule of the word “diagrid.”

Why a skyscraper team might choose one

Diagrids are considered when several project objectives point in the same direction. No single benefit is guaranteed on every tower.

Perimeter stiffness and efficient force paths

Placing a triangulated frame at the building’s outer edge increases the distance between major resisting elements. That geometry can improve resistance to overturning and lateral drift for an appropriate height and form. Axial action in diagonals can also use material differently from a perimeter frame that relies mainly on bending. Engineers still have to check strength, serviceability, vibration, progressive-collapse robustness, and foundation reactions for the actual tower.

Fewer interior interruptions

When more structural work is assigned to the perimeter, the floor plate may need fewer interior columns. This can help offices, hotels, laboratories, or mixed-use floors that need clear sightlines, flexible partitions, or efficient furniture layouts. The result is not necessarily a column-free floor: slabs, transfer elements, the core, mechanical shafts, and localized supports may still constrain planning.

Potentially less dominant core

If the perimeter carries a larger share of lateral and gravity demand, the core may be designed primarily around circulation and services instead of being the only major lateral wall. A smaller structural core can release usable area, but the outcome depends on elevators, stairs, fire strategy, building services, and code requirements. A diagrid should therefore be evaluated with a complete architectural and services plan, not a structural sketch alone.

Architectural expression

Many owners and architects deliberately expose the diagonal pattern. The structure can become the façade’s visual order, communicate how the tower stands, and support a distinctive identity. Exposed members also create detailing obligations: drainage, weathering, thermal bridges, access for inspection, coatings, and the interface with glazing and cladding must be resolved early.

Irregular or changing tower forms

Because the diagonal angle and module can be adjusted, a diagrid can accommodate tapering, faceted, twisting, or otherwise non-orthogonal forms. That flexibility is useful only when the changing geometry remains buildable and the force path is continuous. Each transition can introduce different member lengths, node types, floor-edge conditions, and façade details.

When a diagrid is not automatically the right answer

“Structurally efficient” is a comparison, not a universal property. A diagrid may be less attractive when a regular frame or concrete core already meets drift and strength requirements with simpler repetitive construction. Highly customized nodes, varying diagonal lengths, difficult fire-protection details, or a façade that must conceal the structure can offset theoretical material savings.

Economic conclusions require a stated baseline. A claim that a diagrid uses less steel is meaningful only when the alternative system, building height, geometry, loading, floor area, design standard, and included work are comparable. Fabrication, welding, shop tolerances, transport, erection sequence, temporary stability, fire protection, façade brackets, and inspection all belong in the cost comparison.

Key design decisions

During concept and preliminary design, the team normally tests the following decisions together rather than selecting a diagonal pattern first and resolving the consequences later.

Decision area What must be established
Structural performance Strength, stiffness, drift, vibration, gravity reactions, lateral loads, and overturning for the tower’s height and geometry.
Grid geometry Module height, diagonal inclination, perimeter segmentation, and where the pattern changes at setbacks, transfers, or the crown.
Members and nodes Steel or other member type, section sizes, connection behavior, tolerances, access, welding or bolting, and fabrication sequence.
Core and planning How much the core contributes structurally, where interior supports remain, and how the system affects usable floor area.
Façade integration Whether diagonals are exposed or concealed, how glazing and cladding attach, and how movement, drainage, thermal bridges, and maintenance are handled.
Fire protection Required fire resistance and whether members receive encasement, sprayed protection, board systems, or a tested exposed-steel solution.
Construction and economics Procurement, shop fabrication, delivery, lifting, temporary works, erection tolerances, sequencing, inspection, and a comparable cost baseline.

Diagrid modules, nodes, and constructability

Choosing the module

A module is the repeating triangular unit between horizontal levels or ring beams. Larger modules can reduce the number of intersections but create longer, heavier members and larger connection forces. Smaller modules may improve force distribution and façade rhythm while increasing the number of nodes, pieces, and operations. The best angle is not a universal number; it depends on the tower’s height, aspect ratio, loading, floor-to-floor dimension, and desired interior and exterior geometry.

Designing the nodes

Every intersection is a three-dimensional connection problem. Members may arrive from different directions, with forces that vary around the perimeter and over the height. A node must transfer those forces, maintain alignment, permit fabrication and inspection, and fit within fire and façade zones. Standardizing nodes can improve production, but a tower with changing geometry may require families of related details rather than one identical connection.

Planning the erection sequence

The completed diagrid may be stable, but partially erected segments are not automatically so. The contractor and engineer must define lifting points, temporary bracing, permissible out-of-plumb conditions, survey controls, and the order in which perimeter segments, floors, core elements, and façade components are installed. Connection tolerances matter because small errors accumulate around a triangulated perimeter.

Fire, façade, and building-services implications

Exposed structural steel is an architectural choice with regulatory consequences. Fire-resistance requirements may call for sprayed protection, boards, encasement, or a tested exposed-steel approach. Protection thickness, access, repairs, and appearance can alter member sizes and node details. The fire strategy should be coordinated before the visible pattern is fixed.

The façade may sit outside, inside, or between the diagrid members. Each arrangement changes glazing geometry, bracket design, drainage, cleaning access, thermal performance, and how movement is accommodated. Diagonals can intersect windows, reduce standard panel sizes, or create zones where bespoke panels are required. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing routes also need coordinated paths around inclined members and ring beams.

Examples and what they demonstrate

Technical studies compare the Swiss Re Building in London, Hearst Headquarters in New York, and West Tower in Guangzhou. These projects illustrate why diagrid performance must be read in relation to each building’s height, geometry, loading, and architectural objectives rather than treated as a single standard solution.

One published project page for Sheldon Square Diagrid Tower describes a 32-storey office building completed in 2024 with 41,000 m² of floor area. Diagrid Engineering reports that the project used 19% less steel than its stated baseline, provided 900 m² of uninterrupted floor on each level, and saved 2,100 tonnes of concrete by reducing the core. Those are the engineering firm’s project figures, not independently verified benchmarks for diagrid buildings generally. The baseline and project conditions must be understood before comparing the numbers with another tower.

How to evaluate a proposed diagrid

  1. Define the project brief. Record height, floor-to-floor dimensions, floor area, setbacks, twists, occupancy, façade intent, services, and required clear spans.
  2. Set the comparison baseline. Compare the diagrid with a specific alternative, such as a perimeter moment frame, braced frame, or concrete-core scheme, using the same geometry, loads, codes, and floor area.
  3. Test structural concepts. Model gravity and lateral load paths, drift, vibration, member forces, core participation, foundation reactions, and construction-stage stability.
  4. Study several geometries. Vary module size and diagonal inclination, then measure the effect on stiffness, steel tonnage, node count, floor planning, façade repetition, and erection complexity.
  5. Develop representative nodes. Detail intersections sufficiently to test force transfer, fabrication, fire protection, façade attachments, tolerances, inspection, and maintenance.
  6. Coordinate architecture and services. Check every floor edge, window zone, mechanical route, fire compartment, egress path, and access requirement against the diagonal members.
  7. Price the whole system. Include material, connection fabrication, fire protection, façade interfaces, transport, lifting, temporary works, surveys, inspection, schedule effects, and risk allowances.
  8. Make a documented decision. Select the diagrid only if its structural, planning, architectural, and delivery benefits outweigh the added complexity for this particular tower.

Common misconceptions

“The diagonal pattern is just decoration.”

In a genuine diagrid, the diagonals are structural members in the primary perimeter system. A decorative pattern may resemble one without carrying the building’s loads.

“Every diagrid tower has no core.”

The core may remain essential for elevators, stairs, services, fire separation, and structural resistance. A diagrid can reduce the core’s structural role in some configurations; it does not remove that requirement by definition.

“A diagrid always saves steel and money.”

Material and cost outcomes depend on the comparison baseline, geometry, height, loads, node complexity, fire protection, façade, fabrication, and construction method. The Sheldon Square figures are project-specific claims, not a general percentage for the building type.

“The same grid can be copied onto any skyscraper.”

Module size, angle, member forces, floor dimensions, setbacks, and node types change with the tower. A pattern that works on one building may create inefficient members or difficult connections on another.

Practical decision checklist

  • Does perimeter structure solve a real stiffness, drift, or planning problem?
  • Is the desired floor plan compatible with diagonal members, ring beams, the core, and services?
  • Has the team compared the concept with a defined alternative under the same conditions?
  • Can nodes be fabricated, transported, erected, inspected, and protected against fire?
  • Are façade, drainage, thermal, movement, cleaning, and maintenance details coordinated?
  • Does the construction sequence provide stability before the complete triangulated frame is closed?
  • Are any claimed material or area benefits tied to a named project, date, and baseline rather than presented as universal?

Bottom line

A diagrid is a triangulated perimeter structural system whose diagonal members carry axial forces from both lateral and gravity loading. It is most useful when a skyscraper benefits from perimeter stiffness, fewer interior interruptions, a potentially less dominant core, or a visible structural language—and when the project can absorb the resulting demands on nodes, fabrication, fire protection, façade coordination, and erection. The right question is not whether diagrids are inherently better, but whether this tower gains enough from that load path and planning strategy to justify its specific complexity.
