A credenza is usually a long, low storage cabinet with enclosed compartments and a broad top. It may sit in a dining room, office, living room, hallway, entryway, or media area. A sideboard is the broader name for low horizontal storage furniture, while a buffet usually describes a sideboard intended primarily for dining-room storage and serving.
Those distinctions describe typical use, not strict furniture standards. Modern retailers frequently use credenza, sideboard, buffet, buffet cabinet, and console cabinet for very similar products. When choosing one, dimensions, storage layout, construction, ventilation, and intended use matter more than the label.
What is a credenza?
A credenza is a broad, relatively low cabinet designed to provide enclosed storage and a usable top surface. Depending on its design, it may have doors, drawers, open shelving, adjustable shelves, cable-management openings, legs, or a recessed plinth. Many credenzas have a streamlined, architectural appearance, but there is no universal rule that a credenza must be legless or exceptionally low.

Credenzas are commonly used for storing tableware, office supplies, files, books, electronics, linens, and household items. In an office, a credenza may sit behind a desk or along a conference-room wall. At home, it may serve as dining-room storage, an entryway cabinet, a living-room storage unit, or a media console.
Merriam-Webster defines the furniture sense as a sideboard, buffet, or bookcase modeled after a Renaissance credence, particularly one without legs. Cambridge similarly describes it as a low, wide cupboard used for glasses, plates, and related items. These definitions explain why the term can refer to both dining furniture and office or living-room cabinetry.

The modern furniture term comes from the Italian credenza, associated with belief or confidence. Historically, the word was connected with the practice of tasting or testing food before it was served.
The Renaissance meaning was more specific than the broad modern retail usage. According to research from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a fifteenth-century Italian credenza functioned as a side or serving table. Food could be tasted there, cold dishes could be placed there, and food could be transferred from large platters into smaller serving vessels.
Credenze also became display furniture. A surviving Italian credenza from approximately 1440–1450 has doors enclosing shelves for dishes, while its decorated exterior presented the cabinet as a visible object of status. The Met’s furniture research also traces Italian credenze and cupboards to simpler trestle tables placed against a wall and covered with textiles.
That history helps explain the furniture’s enduring combination of functions: a credenza provides storage below, a work or display surface above, and a substantial visual presence along a wall.

| Term | Usual meaning | Common settings | Main emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credenza | A long, low storage cabinet or sideboard, often streamlined and sometimes supported by a plinth | Office, conference room, living room, dining room, entryway, media area | Enclosed storage, display, work surface, and flexible placement |
| Sideboard | The broad category of low, horizontal storage furniture placed against a wall | Dining room, living room, hallway, and entryway | General storage, display, and sometimes serving |
| Buffet | A dining-focused sideboard used for food service and dining storage | Dining room | Serving dishes, glassware, linens, tableware, and food |
The most useful distinction is intended function and setting, not a fixed measurement. A credenza often suggests a lower-profile, multipurpose cabinet, particularly in an office or modern residential room. A sideboard is the general-purpose term. A buffet usually signals dining-room service and storage.
In practice, the categories overlap heavily. Retailers may describe nearly identical cabinets as a “sideboard buffet credenza cabinet.” One product may be marketed as a credenza for an office, a sideboard for a living room, and a buffet for a dining room.
Are credenzas always lower than buffets?
No. Height and depth are useful shopping clues, but they are not universal standards. Some shopping guides describe buffets as taller or deeper than sideboards and credenzas as lower. Current listings do not apply those rules consistently: similar cabinets may be assigned all three labels, and a cabinet around 33 inches high may be described as a credenza, buffet, and sideboard.

When should you choose each type?
Choose a credenza when you want low, flexible storage
- You need a visually quiet cabinet in a living room, office, hallway, entryway, or dining area.
- You want a surface for a lamp, artwork, décor, printer, office equipment, or media components.
- You prefer an architectural or contemporary look rather than furniture that is explicitly dining-oriented.
- You need storage beneath a television, provided the cabinet is wide and strong enough and has appropriate ventilation and cable access.
- You are furnishing an office or conference room and need storage without adding a tall case piece.
For office use, check whether the interior dimensions accommodate files, paper, equipment, and power cords. For media use, verify ventilation and cable openings rather than assuming that a cabinet sold as a “media credenza” is suitable for every component.
Choose a sideboard when flexibility matters most
- You want a storage piece that could move between a dining room, living room, hallway, or entryway.
- You need a combination of drawers, doors, shelves, and display space.
- You are comparing many retailers and want the broadest search vocabulary.
- You care more about storage capacity and appearance than about a formal dining-service designation.
Searching for a sideboard cabinet can reveal products that do not appear under “credenza.” Try related searches such as “storage sideboard” and “dining room sideboard,” then compare the actual specifications.
Choose a buffet when dining service is the primary job
- You need to store dishes, glassware, table linens, serving pieces, or entertaining supplies.
- You expect to use the top for serving or staging food.
- The cabinet will remain in or near a dining area.
- The depth, shelf configuration, weight capacity, and surface-care requirements suit that use.
A buffet cabinet is the most natural search term when dining-room service is your priority. Do not rely on the word “buffet” to establish a particular height or serving capability. Check the manufacturer’s dimensions, materials, load limits, shelf adjustability, and care instructions.
What to measure before buying
1. Wall width and usable depth
Measure the full wall, then account for trim, outlets, radiators, vents, door casings, and nearby furniture. Measure the cabinet’s actual depth—not just its advertised width—and confirm that doors and drawers can open without blocking a walkway.
2. Height and surrounding clearances
A low credenza may fit beneath a window or television where a taller cabinet will not. Check the distance from the floor to the window sill, baseboard, television, artwork, or shelves above it. Leave enough clearance for opening doors and drawers comfortably.
3. The objects you intend to store
Make a short inventory before shopping. Measure tall bottles, serving platters, files, printers, game consoles, records, books, or other unusually sized objects. Compare those measurements with the cabinet’s interior dimensions, not only its outside dimensions.

4. Delivery route
Measure entry doors, stairways, elevators, corridors, and tight turns. A cabinet that fits the final wall may still be impossible to bring into the room fully assembled. If it ships flat-packed, check package dimensions and whether assembly is required.
Construction and storage details to compare
The name of the furniture does not establish its durability. Product listings may combine solid wood, wood veneer, MDF, particleboard, metal, glass, and hardware of varying quality. Compare the following details:
- Materials: Identify which components are solid wood, veneer, engineered wood, glass, or metal.
- Joinery and hardware: Look for the type of hinges, drawer slides, door adjustment, and leg or plinth construction.
- Shelf support: Check whether shelves are adjustable and whether the listing states a weight capacity.
- Door and drawer clearance: Confirm that handles will not strike adjacent walls or furniture.
- Cable management: For office or media use, look for rear openings and a path to an outlet.
- Surface care: Verify whether the top tolerates heat, moisture, spills, and cleaning products appropriate to your intended use.
- Assembly: Determine whether the unit arrives assembled, partially assembled, or flat-packed.
- Returns and delivery: Review package size, delivery method, damage-reporting deadlines, return shipping, and assembly options.
Credenza, sideboard, or buffet for a television?
Any of the three labels may appear on a cabinet used below a television. The relevant questions are whether the cabinet is wide and deep enough, whether its top supports the equipment, whether the doors allow remote-control signals where necessary, and whether heat can escape.
Measure the television stand or feet, soundbar, game consoles, receiver, streaming devices, and cables. Do not seal heat-producing equipment inside a closed compartment unless the manufacturer’s ventilation requirements are satisfied. Also check whether the cabinet can be secured if it could be climbed on, pulled forward, or destabilized by the equipment.
Tip-over safety: secure the cabinet
Freestanding storage furniture and televisions can tip when pulled, climbed on, or loaded unevenly. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends anchoring furniture and televisions and advises installing anti-tip devices immediately. This is especially important in homes with young children or other vulnerable occupants, but it is good practice for any tall, deep, narrow, or heavily loaded cabinet.
Follow the furniture manufacturer’s anchoring instructions and use hardware appropriate for the wall construction and the cabinet. Do not assume that any strap or restraint is suitable. The CPSC has warned about recalled plastic furniture-restraint kits, including a recent recall cited in the research for this article. Check current recall information and inspect the supplied hardware before installation.
If you need one, compare a furniture anti-tip kit only after confirming its instructions, compatibility, installation method, and recall status. A product mention is not a substitute for following the cabinet manufacturer’s directions or using properly installed hardware.

Once you have results, filter by width, depth, height, material, number of doors, drawer count, shelf arrangement, cable management, assembly, delivery, and safety hardware. Treat the names as overlapping search terms—not as guarantees of a specific design.
A practical decision rule
Use this short rule when comparing listings:
- Start with the room: office, dining room, living room, hallway, entryway, or media area.
- Define the job: general storage, dining service, display, office organization, or equipment storage.
- Set the physical limits: maximum width, depth, height, and required clearances.
- Check the interior: confirm that the items you own will fit.
- Evaluate construction: materials, shelf capacity, hardware, assembly, and surface care.
- Plan for safety: determine whether the cabinet and any television or equipment should be anchored.
- Only then compare labels and price: a well-built sideboard may suit your room better than a credenza, and a buffet may be the right choice even if its listing uses another name.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a credenza the same as a sideboard?
Not exactly, although the terms overlap. A credenza usually suggests a long, low, multipurpose storage cabinet, while sideboard is the broader term for low horizontal storage furniture. Many modern retailers use the two names for similar products.
Is a buffet always taller than a credenza?
No. Height conventions vary by manufacturer and retailer. A buffet generally signals dining-room serving and storage, but the label does not guarantee a particular height, depth, or construction.
Can a credenza go in a living room?
Yes. Credenzas are commonly used in living rooms for enclosed storage, display, and media equipment. Check dimensions, cable openings, ventilation, load limits, and tip-over safety if it will support a television.
What is the best search term for dining-room storage?
Try “buffet cabinet,” “dining buffet storage,” “sideboard cabinet,” and “dining room sideboard.” Because retailers use the terms inconsistently, compare the actual dimensions and storage layout rather than relying on the product name.
The Bottom Line
A credenza is usually a long, low storage cabinet; a sideboard is the broader category; and a buffet is the dining-focused version. The distinction is useful for describing intended function, but it is not a strict industry classification. Choose by room, dimensions, storage configuration, construction, ventilation, and safety—not by the label alone.
