Choose wall-hanging hardware by matching the fastener to the wall material and the object’s weight. First identify what the wall is made of, then weigh the item, and select a fixing whose stated rating and installation instructions fit both. A drywall hanger is not automatically suitable for plaster or masonry, and ratings from multiple hangers should not be assumed to add together.
Identify the wall before choosing hardware
Drywall, plasterboard, plaster, brick and other masonry do not hold fasteners in the same way. If you are unsure what is behind the surface, identify the wall construction before drilling or selecting an anchor. “Plaster” can refer to different assemblies, so do not assume a fixing intended for drywall will work in every plaster wall.
For general guidance, Lowe’s recommends choosing hardware rated for the picture’s weight and suited to the wall material. The appropriate choice also depends on whether solid backing is available, the object’s shape and mounting points, and the installation conditions specified by the fastener maker.
Match the fixing to the wall and load

Weigh the object and check the rating
Weigh the item instead of estimating, especially if it is heavy or valuable. Then check the hardware maker’s stated load limit and the conditions attached to it, including wall type and installation method. A rating for one product is not a general capacity for drywall, plaster or another wall surface.

For example, 3M lists its CLAW 25 lb. Drywall Picture Hanger as holding up to 25 pounds and describes the product for drywall use. That figure applies to that named model and its stated use; it is not an independent test result or a rating for other hangers. The manufacturer describes the product as using hardened steel claws that lock into drywall.
Do not multiply a hanger’s rating by the number of hangers used. 3M’s product-family FAQ cautions that using two CLAW hangers does not make the maximum object weight cumulative. For multiple mounting points or a rail, follow the system maker’s instructions for the complete arrangement.

Install picture rails and multi-point systems as assemblies
A picture rail can make it easier to reposition several pieces, but its load capacity depends on more than the hooks. Track, anchors, cables or rods, and attachment to the wall must work together. Artiteq / AS Hanging Systems explains that drywall or gypsum-wall system capacity relies on correct anchoring and load distribution. Do not assume that a rail’s or component’s individual rating is the capacity of the whole installed system.

Practical selection checklist
- Identify the wall material and construction, including what lies behind the surface.
- Weigh the object and note how its weight and mounting points will be supported.
- Choose a fastener specifically suited to that wall and the object’s load.
- Read the maker’s installation instructions and all conditions attached to its rating.
- For rails or multiple hangers, use the maker’s guidance for the complete assembly rather than adding component ratings.
