What Happens to an Old Water Heater During Replacement?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During a normal water-heater replacement, the installer takes the old unit out of service, makes its gas or electrical connections safe, isolates the water lines, drains the tank when the system requires it, and removes the heater if doing so is safe and practical. The old appliance is then recycled, reused, returned through a retailer or rental company, or taken through a local municipal disposal route.

Removal is not automatically included everywhere. Your contract, local collection rules, whether the heater is rented, site access, and any hidden building or safety problem determine what actually happens. Have removal, disposal and possible repair work written into the quote before installation day.

What the installer does on replacement day

1. The old heater is decommissioned

The installer first takes the existing heater out of service. A gas appliance must have its gas connection sealed or capped appropriately; an electric unit must have its electrical connection made safe. Water connections are isolated and sealed so they cannot leak. These are professional tasks. A homeowner should not disconnect gas, electrical or plumbing services based on a general online procedure.

The exact sequence depends on the equipment. A storage tank, instantaneous (tankless) heater, heat-pump unit and solar-assisted system can have different valves, controls and ancillary components. The installer should identify what is being replaced and which connected components remain.

2. The tank is drained when applicable

For a gravity-fed water heater, the Essential Services Commission of Victoria’s 2025 replacement guidance says the tank should be drained. Draining reduces the unit’s weight and prevents stored water from spilling during handling. A professional may attach a hose to direct the water to a suitable drain or safe outdoor location, but the guide does not require a particular hose and installers may bring their own equipment.

Not every replacement has a conventional tank. A tankless unit may have little or no stored water, while a solar system can include roof-mounted collectors, pumps or controls that are handled separately. Ask the installer what will be drained, disconnected or left in place for your specific system.

3. The heater is removed if it is safe and practical

When access, weight and site conditions permit, the old product is taken away. The Victorian regulator says most products should be removed and disposed of appropriately by the installer. Removal can involve moving a heavy steel tank through narrow doors, down stairs or across finished surfaces, so the installer may need to protect floors and plan a safe route.

Removal is not guaranteed. The same guidance recognizes cases in which taking the unit out would be unsafe or impractical, including some gravity-fed arrangements, roof-mounted components during certain solar-water-heater upgrades, major building remediation, or a health and safety risk. If asbestos or another hazardous material is suspected, applicable asbestos law and specialist handling requirements control what can happen. You should be told about a known restriction before approving the upgrade.

Who is responsible for taking it away?

Responsibility comes from the written scope of work, not from a universal rule. Some installers include removal and disposal in the replacement price; others charge a separate haul-away fee or leave the old appliance for the owner to arrange. A retailer delivering a new heater may also offer removal, but that service must be confirmed in advance.

Ask for the answer in the quote or work order. Phrases such as “replace water heater” can describe installation only and may not include carrying away the old tank, recycling charges, access equipment or repairs discovered after removal. The Victorian regulator expects the consumer and installer to agree on the installation scope, including whether the old product will be removed and what building repairs are included.

Where the old water heater can go

There is no single nationwide disposal route. Municipal rules differ, and some jurisdictions prohibit appliances from ordinary landfill collection. The practical choice depends on local availability, the heater’s condition, whether pickup is offered and whether removal is already included in delivery or installation.

Route When it fits What to verify
Installer haul-away The replacement contractor has agreed to remove the old unit. Whether disposal or recycling is included, whether a separate fee applies and what happens if the unit cannot be safely moved.
Retailer removal with delivery A retailer is delivering the replacement and offers an old-appliance service. Book the service before delivery; confirm that the retailer accepts your heater type and that access conditions are suitable.
Municipal recycling centre You can transport the appliance or arrange a local service. Whether the site accepts water heaters, its hours, vehicle rules and any fee.
Scheduled curbside appliance collection Your city provides a separate large-appliance pickup. 予約 or scheduling requirements, placement instructions and whether the heater must be disconnected and emptied first.
Transfer station or metal recycler The unit is not being reused and local facilities accept scrap appliances. Acceptance policy, identification requirements, transport safety and possible charges.
Donation or reuse The heater works, is in good condition and a local organization accepts it. Age, condition, testing, pickup capability and acceptance before you transport it.

Examples of local rules

Peel Region directs residents to a Community Recycling Centre for a bulky water heater. Its guidance says large appliances and metal fixtures are accepted there free of charge, curbside collection is no longer offered for this item, and a working unit may be donated for reuse. It also suggests asking the retailer to remove the old appliance when delivering the replacement.

Jacksonville, Florida, provides scheduled curbside appliance collection. The city states: “Major appliances are prohibited by law in landfills and therefore are collected separately from household garbage.” That statement describes Jacksonville’s rule, not a universal law for every community.

Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency advises residents to use its transfer station or contact local metal recyclers. It says its local Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts heaters in good condition and less than three years old, subject to confirmation before transport.

These examples show why a national answer is impossible. Check your municipality’s current waste guidance and ask the installer or retailer whether haul-away is already part of the job. The available sources do not establish a typical nationwide disposal price; any fee depends on the provider and locality.

What if the water heater is rented?

Ownership changes who can authorize removal. Read the rental agreement before scheduling work. Kitchener Utilities’ agreement, for example, says the utility owns a rented unit. At the end of its useful life, if Kitchener Utilities is not installing the replacement, the agreement says the customer owns the old unit and may contact the utility to arrange disconnection or disposal for a charge under the provider’s current fee schedule. It also says the utility is not responsible for reconnecting ancillary equipment.

That is a provider-specific contract, not a general rule. In another area, the rental company may require notice, arrange its own pickup, charge a termination or removal fee, or retain ownership until the agreement ends. Do not permit an installer to dispose of a rented heater until the rental company confirms the process in writing.

Permits and inspections can affect the job

Permit requirements depend on your jurisdiction and the work being performed. Kirkland, Washington, lists a mechanical permit for gas replacement, plumbing permit triggers when piping must be rearranged, and a building permit trigger when walls, floors or ceilings must be opened or altered. San Diego lists water-heater replacement among plumbing-permit work, with an exception for tankless types on the cited page.

Those are local examples, not universal requirements. Before work begins, have the installer or your local building department confirm which permits, inspections and final approvals apply to your fuel type, location and installation method. A permit question can arise even when the new heater is in the same general position if venting, gas piping, electrical work or framing changes.

What to put in writing before installation

  1. Removal: State whether the installer will disconnect and physically remove the old heater.
  2. Disposal: Specify recycling, reuse, retailer return or another destination, and identify any separate haul-away or facility fee.
  3. Access: Note stairs, roof access, narrow openings, gate restrictions, fragile flooring or other conditions that could make removal unsafe.
  4. Unexpected hazards: Ask what happens if removal reveals asbestos, water damage, corroded supports, unsafe wiring, a gas problem or structural repairs.
  5. Rental ownership: Confirm whether the unit belongs to a utility or rental company and who has authority to dispose of it.
  6. Permits and inspection: Identify who obtains permits, schedules inspections and supplies completion documentation.
  7. Ancillary equipment: List components such as solar controls, pumps, expansion tanks, tempering valves, stands and pipework that will remain, be replaced or be reconnected.

Having these points in the scope prevents a replacement quote from turning into an argument about an abandoned tank, an unexpected disposal charge or a repair that was never priced.

When leaving the old unit in place is acceptable

A heater may remain when removal would create an unreasonable safety risk, require substantial building work or involve components that are not part of the upgrade. Roof-mounted solar equipment is a common example in which some parts may remain while the storage unit or controls are changed. A gravity-fed arrangement can also require special handling.

If the old product will stay, the installer should identify it clearly, explain why removal is not safe or practical, and state whether it remains connected, isolated or abandoned in place. The contract should assign responsibility for any future removal and disclose any building remediation that is required. Hazardous materials must be handled under the laws that apply where the property is located.

Can an old water heater be recycled or reused?

Often, yes, but acceptance is local and condition-dependent. Steel tanks and metal fittings may be accepted at recycling centres or by scrap-metal facilities. A working heater may qualify for donation or reuse, subject to age, condition and the organization’s inspection policy. Peel Region and Onondaga County illustrate both approaches, but neither policy applies automatically outside those areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before loading the appliance into a vehicle, call the destination and confirm that it accepts water heaters, whether the unit must be empty, and whether staff provide unloading. A tank can be heavy and awkward even after draining. If the installer is already removing it, having the contractor deliver it to an approved facility is usually simpler than arranging a second transport trip.

A practical decision path

  1. Start with ownership: If the heater is rented, contact the rental provider before approving removal.
  2. Read the installation scope: Look for explicit language covering disconnection, removal, haul-away and disposal.
  3. Check local rules: Ask the municipality whether it offers a recycling centre, scheduled appliance pickup or another approved route.
  4. Assess reuse: If the unit still works and is in good condition, ask an accepted reuse organization whether it meets its age and safety limits.
  5. Plan for exceptions: Confirm what happens if access, asbestos, structural damage or another hazard prevents removal.
  6. Confirm permits: Have the installer or authority identify required permits and inspections before the old unit is disconnected.

The safest outcome is a written plan that names the responsible party, the destination and the price before the replacement starts. The old water heater is then treated as part of the construction work rather than as an unexpected item left at the curb.
