What Glue Should You Use From This Material to That?

The best glue depends on both surfaces and the conditions the joint must withstand. Learn what to check for plastic, wood, glass, ceramic, and metal.

The right glue depends on both materials, their finishes, and what the joint must withstand. Identify the exact substrates first—especially for plastics—then check the adhesive’s current label and technical data for preparation, cure time, and the intended conditions.

Start with the two surfaces and the job

Before choosing an adhesive, identify what each side is made of and whether it is bare, painted, coated, sealed, glazed, or otherwise finished. Then consider how the joint will be loaded and exposed: moisture, heat, sunlight, chemicals, vibration, or impact can rule out an otherwise compatible glue.

  • Substrates: Use the specific material or resin name where possible; “plastic” is not precise enough.
  • Surface condition: Check for coatings, glaze, sealers, contamination, and mold-release agents.
  • Joint demands: Consider whether it needs flexibility, gap filling, impact resistance, or a rigid bond.
  • Application: Compare preparation, working time, repositioning time, handling strength, and full cure.

3M explains that surface energy affects how an adhesive wets a surface. Its material-bonding guidance defines surface energy as “a measure of how readily something spreads out over a surface, also known as wet-out.” That helps explain why an adhesive that works on one material may fail on another.

Match the adhesive to the material pair

Plastic to plastic—or plastic to another material

Do not assume a glue labeled for plastic will bond every plastic equally well. 3M distinguishes engineered plastics from low-surface-energy plastics and identifies polyethylene and polypropylene as difficult-to-bond examples. Some engineered plastics may also carry mold-release agents that interfere with adhesion. Identify the resin and any coating, then follow the exact product’s instructions for cleaning, abrasion, primer, or other preparation.

Wood to wood or wood to another surface

For liquid adhesives, unfinished wood is readily wetted because it absorbs the adhesive. A painted, sealed, or otherwise finished surface behaves differently. 3M notes that tape may require a smoothed or sealed wood finish; for glue, check that the product is specified for the actual finish and prepare it as directed.

Glass or ceramic to another material

On many technical ceramics, the bonding surface is the glaze rather than the porous ceramic beneath it. Check whether the piece is glazed and whether the adhesive is specified for that surface. Glass and ceramic compatibility depends on the particular adhesive formulation and the joint’s exposure and loading.

Metal to another material

For some small metal repairs, Henkel lists aluminum, steel, wood, ceramic, and plastic among the materials its Loctite Metal Glue works on. That is a claim for this specific product, not a guarantee for every combination, load, or environment. The manufacturer describes it as a clear-drying gel in a 0.60 oz size. Check its current label and instructions against your exact materials and intended use.

What adhesive-family names do—and do not—tell you

Epoxy

Epoxy formulations can bond a range of materials, including metals, glass, ceramics, wood, composites, and certain plastics. That broad category is not a compatibility guarantee: the exact formulation and surface preparation matter. 3M’s structural-adhesives FAQ says room-temperature-cured epoxy bonds need well-prepared surfaces, including cleaning and sometimes abrasion. It also notes that epoxy cures more slowly than acrylic structural adhesives; do not assume that this comparison applies to every consumer product.

Reactive polyurethane hot melts (PUR)

In 3M’s description of PUR adhesives, cooling provides holding strength, while moisture curing continues for 24–48 hours to reach final structural strength. That figure describes the PUR family guidance, not a universal cure time for household glue. Handling strength and full cure are different stages, so follow the specific adhesive’s schedule before loading a joint. 3M identifies its Scotch-Weld PUR Easy Adhesive EZ250150 as “For industrial/occupational use only. Not for consumer sale or use”; it is not a household DIY recommendation.

Compare candidate products before you glue

When more than one adhesive appears suitable, compare the exact products rather than relying on a family name or a broad “multi-purpose” claim.

What to compare What to verify
Substrate compatibility Does the label or technical data identify both exact materials, including the plastic resin or surface finish?
Preparation Are cleaning, abrasion, primer, activation, or removal of contamination required?
Working time How long can the parts be positioned or repositioned before the adhesive sets?
Strength and cure When can the joint be handled, and when is it fully cured and ready for service?
Bond behavior Does the cured adhesive remain flexible or become rigid? Can it fill the gap in this joint?
Service conditions Is the product suitable for the joint’s moisture, temperature, UV, chemical, vibration, and impact exposure?

Use the current product label and technical data for the intended application. Compatibility, formulations, and instructions can change, and a generic adhesive-family description cannot establish suitability for every material pair.
