For a typical indoor fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata), choose a complete fertilizer labeled for indoor plants that includes micronutrients. Feed when the plant is actively growing and has enough light, following the product label rather than a rigid calendar. A liquid product listing a 3-1-2 formula is one example—not a proven best formula for every home.
What fertilizer should I use for my fiddle-leaf fig?
Start with a complete indoor-plant fertilizer that contains micronutrients. The University of Maryland Extension identifies fertilizers with micronutrients as one way to supply them to indoor plants: Fertilizer for Indoor Plants.
Fertilizer labels show the percentages by weight of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Those numbers describe nutrient composition; they do not, by themselves, prove that a product is suitable or more effective for a fiddle-leaf fig. Check that the label covers indoor plants or names Ficus lyrata, review its dilution and application directions, and use the plant’s growth and conditions to decide when to feed. UF/IFAS explains label numbers and container fertilizer use in The Basics of Fertilizer.
A 3-1-2 fertilizer is an example, not a universal optimum
OMRI lists “The Grow Co. Liquid Fiddle Leaf Fig Fertilizer” for Ficus lyrata with a 3-1-2 formula: OMRI Products List, Crop by Category. That listing confirms the product identity and formula; it does not establish current retailer availability or show that this formula outperforms other fertilizers. The available guidance does not establish one ideal N-P-K ratio for every household fiddle-leaf fig.

When should I fertilize an indoor fiddle-leaf fig?
Let growth, light, season, and the plant’s environment guide feeding. Missouri Botanical Garden explains that indoor fertilizer needs depend on “the plant, the season, and the environment”: When and how should I fertilize my indoor plants? Active growth in brighter light can increase a plant’s need. A mature plant growing slowly in low winter light may need no fertilizer from fall to spring.
For fiddle-leaf figs specifically, a University of California Cooperative Extension article advises feeding once or twice a year in spring and summer with a general houseplant fertilizer, following the directions and not exceeding the label guidance. It suggests using half the recommended strength as a precaution: Fiddle Leaf Fig Houseplant – Proper Care. Treat that as the article’s care recommendation, not a frequency proven best for every home or growing condition.

Newly purchased or recently moved plants
Do not fertilize automatically as soon as a plant arrives. Missouri Botanical Garden advises waiting until a new plant shows growth before beginning lightly. This lets you respond to signs of active growth rather than feeding a plant that has not yet adjusted.
How should I apply fertilizer?
- Check the label. Confirm the product is intended for indoor plants or fiddle-leaf figs, and read its dilution, dose, and application directions.
- Feed only when conditions support growth. Active growth and brighter light are reasons to consider feeding; a mature plant in low winter light may not need it.
- Apply according to the label. Do not exceed the stated dose or frequency. If following the UC Cooperative Extension article’s fiddle-leaf-fig advice, use half the label-recommended strength as a precaution.
- Watch the plant and growing conditions. Yellow leaves alone are not a reason to increase fertilizer. Check for other possible causes before changing the feeding routine.
Liquid or slow-release?
Both liquid and slow-release fertilizers are options for indoor plants, according to Missouri Botanical Garden. The cited guidance does not compare their results on household fiddle-leaf figs. Choose based on label clarity, ease of measuring and applying the dose, and which format fits the routine you can follow consistently.

Why more fertilizer can harm a fiddle-leaf fig
Excess fertilizer can leave soluble salts behind in potting media. UF/IFAS warns that salt buildup in container media can cause stunted growth, leaf browning, or even death: The Basics of Fertilizer. Following the product label is safer than increasing strength or frequency in response to a plant problem.
Yellow foliage does not establish that the plant needs fertilizer. Missouri Botanical Garden lists cold, insufficient light, excess fertilizer, and natural dormancy among possible causes. UF/IFAS also associates high soluble salts with loss of older leaves, stunted growth, yellowing new growth, and shriveled roots in Ficus: Cultural Guidelines for Commercial Production of Interiorscape Ficus.

What the soluble-salt thresholds mean
UF/IFAS advises against fertilizing commercial Ficus when soluble salts measured by the pour-through method are 1.0 dS/m or higher. It says that above 3.0 dS/m, leaching the growing medium may help reduce potential leaf burn. These thresholds are commercial interiorscape guidance, not a universal requirement to measure salt levels in every household pot.
