For a wheelchair-accessible home route, plan for a 32-inch (815 mm) minimum clear doorway opening, a 36-inch (915 mm) clear opening when the doorway is deeper than 24 inches, and a 36-inch (915 mm) continuous clear hallway width. Turning areas generally need either a 60-inch (1,525 mm) diameter circle or a compliant 60-by-60-inch T-shaped space. These are finished, usable dimensions—not the nominal size printed on a door or shown on a floor plan.

Trim, frames, stops, hinges, the door slab, baseboards, furniture and stored items can reduce the space a wheelchair actually has. Measure the completed route, check both sides of each door, and verify your local residential requirements before construction.

Home wheelchair-accessibility dimensions at a glance

The U.S. Department of Justice 2010 ADA Standards and U.S. Access Board guidance use clear-space measurements. The following benchmarks are the starting point for evaluating a route through a home.

Route feature Benchmark What it means in practice
Doorway clear opening 32 in (815 mm) minimum Measure the usable opening with a swinging door open 90 degrees, from the door face to the stop.
Doorway deeper than 24 in 36 in (915 mm) minimum clear opening A deep reveal, vestibule or thick wall increases the required opening width.
Continuous hallway or accessible route 36 in (915 mm) minimum The full route must remain clear; furniture and fixtures cannot reduce the usable width.
Turning circle 60 in (1,525 mm) diameter minimum The entire circle must be clear of walls, door swings, cabinets and equipment.
T-shaped turning space 60 by 60 in, with 36 in arms and base A properly arranged T can substitute for a circular turn.
180-degree turn around an element under 48 in wide 42 in approach, 48 in at the turn, 42 in leaving A 60-inch clear turn width is an alternative to this three-part arrangement.
Passing on a route under 60 in wide 60-by-60-in passing spaces at intervals no greater than 200 ft (61 m) Use compliant T-shaped passing areas where a square passing space is not practical.
Level changes No change in level; exception for a slope no steeper than 1:48 A small existing lip may need a properly sized threshold ramp, but a ramp does not widen an opening.

These figures describe federal accessibility benchmarks. Whether they legally apply to a particular house depends on the building type, jurisdiction, alteration scope and funding. Local building and housing rules can be more specific, so treat the table as a design baseline rather than a substitute for code review.

Why a nominal 32-inch door may not provide 32 inches

A door is labeled by its nominal slab or frame size, while a wheelchair needs the finished clear opening. Those measurements are not interchangeable. A 32-inch nominal door can provide less usable width after the slab, hinges, stop, frame and trim occupy space.

Measure a swinging door correctly

  1. Finish the opening as it will exist in use, including the frame, stop, hinges, casing and floor finish.
  2. Open the door to 90 degrees.
  3. Measure at the narrowest point from the face of the open door to the stop. This is the clear opening used for the doorway benchmark.
  4. Repeat the check from the other side. A doorway can have adequate opening width but inadequate maneuvering room on one approach.
  5. Record the depth of the doorway. If the opening is deeper than 24 inches, use the wider clear-opening benchmark rather than relying on a nominal door size.

Do not measure between the outside edges of the casing, from jamb to jamb with the door closed, or from a wall corner to the opposite wall. Those dimensions can look generous while the actual passage is too narrow.

Account for the approach, not only the opening

Wheelchair maneuvering clearance changes according to whether the user approaches the pull side, push side or hinge side. The door swing must not block the accessible route or remove the space needed to line up with the latch. Draw the swing arc on the plan and show the wheelchair approach area on both sides before choosing a door location.

Hallway width: the route must work continuously

A hallway that is wide enough in the middle but pinches at a baseboard, radiator, cabinet, picture ledge or parked item does not provide a continuous accessible route. Measure the narrowest finished width along the complete path from the entry to each room it serves.

The short-pinch-point exception

The 36-inch route benchmark is intended to continue along the route. A 32-inch clear segment is an exception for a short distance, such as a doorway, and the stated short-distance allowance is no more than 24 inches. It is not a reason to design an entire corridor at the smaller width. If a constriction is longer, relocate the obstruction, widen the route or redesign the space.

Passing spaces on narrower routes

Where a route is under 60 inches wide, users may need room to pass or reposition. Provide a 60-by-60-inch passing space, or a compliant T-shaped passing area, at intervals no greater than 200 feet. In a small house, a doorway alcove or enlarged intersection may be able to serve this purpose, but it must be clear of the door swing and other projections when used.

Situation Design response
Long, straight corridor Keep the clear width continuous and remove furniture or storage from the route.
Short doorway-like constriction Confirm that it is no longer than the permitted short distance and that the approach and door maneuvering areas still work.
Route under 60 inches with no place to pass Add compliant passing spaces at the required intervals or widen the route.
Intersection with cabinets or fixtures Check the intersection as a turning or passing space, not merely as two hallway widths.

Turning space at rooms, corners and fixtures

Moving straight through a doorway is only one part of accessibility. A wheelchair user may need to turn into a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or living area, back out of a dead-end corridor, or reposition beside a fixture.

Choose a circular or T-shaped turn

Provide either the 60-inch-diameter clear circle or the 60-by-60-inch T-shaped turning space with 36-inch arms and base. Keep the entire maneuvering area free of door swings, furniture, plumbing fixtures, appliances and stored objects. A floor plan can appear to contain a square of open area while a door leaf or cabinet corner cuts into the usable shape.

Plan a 180-degree reversal deliberately

A tight reversal around an element less than 48 inches wide uses a different geometry: 42 inches of clear approach, 48 inches at the turn and 42 inches of clear departure. A 60-inch clear turn width is an alternative. This matters at the end of a hallway, around a kitchen island, beside a parked vehicle or where a wall return creates a U-shaped path.

Show the wheelchair path with arrows on the plan. If the chair must make a three-point correction, scrape past a wall or swing a door into the route, the nominal hallway width is not enough.

Thresholds and level changes

Required clear floor, ground and turning surfaces should be level. The permitted exception is a slope no steeper than 1:48. Even a small lip can catch a caster, stop a scooter or make a turn harder, especially where the user approaches at an angle.

Using a threshold ramp in an existing home

A low-profile wheelchair threshold ramp can address a small existing lip when its slope, width, edge treatment and load rating suit the particular wheelchair or scooter. Verify the ramp in the installed position, including how it meets the finished flooring and whether it narrows the doorway. The accessory solves a level-change problem only; it cannot increase a doorway’s clear width or make a narrow hallway wider.

Evaluate the complete route, room by room

Accessibility failures often occur between compliant-looking features. Use a route map from the entrance to every room the route is intended to serve, and inspect each transition in sequence.

  1. Start at the entrance. Measure the clear path from the approach surface through the door and identify the side on which the user must pull or push.
  2. Follow the hallway. Measure the finished width at walls, corners, door casings, handrails, baseboards, heating equipment and any permanent projection.
  3. Check every doorway. Use the open-90-degree measurement and verify the depth condition for wide openings.
  4. Draw the maneuvering area. Include the swing arc and the space needed to reach the latch from the intended approach.
  5. Mark turns. Insert the circular or T-shaped turning geometry wherever the user must change direction, enter a room, reverse or maneuver around an element.
  6. Inspect floors. Locate thresholds, abrupt transitions, loose mats and slopes that could interfere with the clear floor or turning surface.
  7. Place furniture last. Re-measure after beds, sofas, dining tables, carts, bins and appliances are positioned; movable objects can create a permanent practical obstruction.
  8. Test with the actual mobility device. A manual chair, power chair and scooter have different footprints and turning behavior. Measure the device and compare it with the planned clear spaces before ordering doors or cabinets.

Strategies for an existing home

When the current route misses a benchmark, start with the obstruction that limits the greatest number of movements. A narrow doorway serving several rooms may deserve priority over a minor corner that can be cleared by rearranging furniture.

Widen the opening where the clear measurement fails

A contractor may need to alter the frame, trim or wall opening, replace the door assembly, or change the swing direction. The finished result still has to be measured with the door open, and structural, electrical, fire-separation and permit issues should be reviewed before demolition.

Rework the approach area

Sometimes the slab is wide enough but a nearby wall, cabinet or fixture prevents alignment with the latch. Relocating the obstruction, reversing the swing or selecting a different door configuration can restore maneuvering space without changing the full hallway. Confirm that the revised swing does not block another route.

Protect the clear hallway

Use furniture layouts that preserve the measured route every day. Storage in a corridor, a shoe rack at the entry or a laundry basket at a bedroom door can turn a compliant plan into an unusable path. Mark the keep-clear zone during installation and include it in household routines.

Coordinate several small changes

Threshold treatment, door hardware, lighting controls and furniture placement should be considered together. A ramp that is correctly sloped but placed where a door swing lands can create a new obstruction. Likewise, widening one door does not help if the hallway immediately outside remains pinched.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Confusing nominal size with clear width

Symptom: The plan calls for a 32-inch door, but a tape measure shows less usable space. Correction: Measure the open door from face to stop after the frame and trim are installed; specify the required clear opening, not only the slab label.

Designing a 36-inch hallway but ignoring the turn

Symptom: The corridor is straight and wide enough, yet the chair cannot enter a room or reverse at the end. Correction: Add the required circle, T-shaped space or 180-degree-turn geometry to the plan and keep door swings outside it.

Using a ramp to solve the wrong problem

Symptom: A threshold ramp is installed, but the chair still cannot pass through the doorway. Correction: Treat level change and width as separate checks; measure both and correct each deficiency.

Checking only an empty house

Symptom: The route passes inspection before move-in but fails after furniture arrives. Correction: Re-measure with the actual furniture, equipment and storage in their normal positions.

Assuming federal rules settle every residential question

Symptom: A design is declared compliant without checking the project’s jurisdiction or funding. Correction: Confirm whether the dwelling is covered, which local residential code applies, and whether the alteration triggers additional requirements.

What the residential ADA provisions do—and do not—establish

For a covered dwelling unit, the residential provisions call for at least one accessible route connecting spaces and elements, and every room served by that route must provide a compliant turning space. That does not mean every existing private house automatically falls under the same federal requirements. Coverage and obligations vary with building type, jurisdiction, alteration scope and funding.

Use the federal dimensions as a practical baseline, then ask the local building department, design professional or qualified accessibility specialist which rules govern the project. Keep a dimensioned drawing and photographs of existing conditions so the installer can verify the finished clear spaces rather than relying on catalog dimensions.

A practical pre-construction checklist

  • Record the actual wheelchair or scooter footprint and turning behavior.
  • Measure every swinging doorway open 90 degrees, from door face to stop.
  • Identify any doorway deeper than 24 inches and plan the wider clear opening.
  • Measure the hallway at its narrowest finished points, including corners and projections.
  • Mark each required circular, T-shaped or 180-degree turning area.
  • Locate passing spaces if any portion of the route is under 60 inches wide.
  • Check thresholds and floor transitions for level changes or slopes beyond the permitted exception.
  • Draw door swings and verify pull-side, push-side and hinge-side maneuvering space.
  • Recheck after trim, flooring, cabinets, appliances and furniture are installed.
  • Confirm local code, permit and funding requirements before work begins.

The most reliable test is the finished, occupied route: the actual mobility device must be able to enter, travel, turn and leave without an obstruction. A doorway or hallway should be judged as part of that complete path, not as an isolated number on a plan.
