What Do Architecture Interns Do, and How Can Students Find a Placement?

Architecture interns support real projects while learning how a practice operates. Depending on their education, the firm and the project phase, they may draft and measure existing buildings, make physical or digital models, research materials and codes, prepare diagrams, attend meetings, shadow architects, and revise work after critique. A strong placement pairs those tasks with a named supervisor, regular feedback, paid employment where required, and exposure to more than one phase of practice.

Students usually find placements through their school, architecture job boards, professional groups and carefully targeted applications to firms. The right offer is not simply the one with the most impressive project name: it is the one that provides lawful compensation, accessible supervision, useful work and a schedule you can sustain.

What architecture interns actually do

There is no universal intern job description. A high-school placement may emphasize observation and introduction to design, while a college or graduate intern may contribute to production drawings or building research. Firm size, the project phase, your software experience and the amount of supervision all change the day-to-day work.

Design and drawing exercises

The American Institute of Architects’ June 2025 High School Internships Guide lists drafting and measured drawing, observational sketching, diagrams and graphics, physical and digital modeling, design iteration and presentations as possible learning activities. A student might measure a room, translate those dimensions into a drawing, test a massing model, and explain a design choice to a group. These are examples for structured programs, not a promise that every employer will assign every activity.

Research and communication

Interns can research building styles, materials, precedents, accessibility considerations or local requirements, then turn findings into a short memo, diagram or presentation. Collaboration and time management are part of the learning: you may coordinate a small task with another intern, track a deadline or prepare questions before a project meeting. Receiving and applying feedback is as important as producing the first version.

Exposure to digital practice

The AIA guide’s sample schedule includes a Revit/BIM modeling activity, job shadowing, a building-design exercise, research and a mock request for information (RFI) response. A firm may instead use different software or ask you to observe its workflow. Do not assume that one named application is a universal hiring requirement; the sources do not establish a standard software list for all internships.

Seeing the full project cycle

NCARB’s Architectural Experience Program (AXP) describes the broader professional areas an intern may gradually encounter: practice and project management; programming and analysis; project planning and design; project development and documentation; and construction and evaluation. Early assignments should be supervised and matched to your level. Students should not be expected to make independent regulated professional decisions.

This drawing paper pad works as a drawing pad for kids at school or home. The drawing book for kids supports doodles and classwork, while the drawing notebook for kids keeps sketches and ideas together. As an art drawing pad, it gives beginners and artists room for dry-media practice. Acid-free pages help reduce yellowing over time.

Project development and documentation is the largest AXP area, at 1,520 hours. Exposure can include drawing coordination, details, specifications, schedules or document checking, but an intern’s exact duties depend on the firm and the project. Construction and evaluation may involve observing a site visit or learning how a completed design is reviewed, rather than directing construction.

How to find an architecture internship

Use several channels at once. A single application rarely reveals every opportunity, and school calendars and firm hiring needs do not line up perfectly.

  1. Start with your school. Ask architecture faculty, the department office and career services which firms have hosted students, whether internship credit is available, how portfolio reviews work and when career events occur. Confirm each program’s current rules; offerings vary by institution.
  2. Search architecture-specific listings. The AIA Career Center provides keyword and location search, job-seeker accounts, resume posting and job matches. Its page also describes a free, one-time resume evaluation for registered job seekers. Check the current service terms when you create an account, because features can change.
  3. Use local professional networks. Contact your local AIA chapter or an emerging-professional group about mentors, events and introductions. AIA advises students to ask a local chapter about mentors and to use its member directory to locate support groups. Attend with a short introduction and a specific question rather than asking everyone for a job.
  4. Build a focused firm list. Select practices whose project types, design approach or community work genuinely interest you. Read their project and careers pages, note the names of relevant teams and tailor each message. A targeted list is more effective than sending the same application to every firm.
  5. Prepare a compact application package. Include your availability, location, school year, resume and a small portfolio. Choose a few drawings, models, diagrams or research pages that show how you think; explain your role in group work. Keep file sizes manageable and label the work clearly. If a firm specifies a format, follow it.
  6. Send a concise inquiry. State why that firm’s work interests you, the dates and hours you can work, and what you hope to learn. Ask whether the firm is accepting interns and who handles applications. An unsolicited email is a legitimate inquiry, not evidence that the firm must offer a placement.
  7. Prepare for the conversation. Be ready to describe one project, one revision you made after critique and one skill you want to develop. Ask how interns are supervised, what a typical week includes, whether the role is paid, and how the schedule fits the academic term.
  8. Track and follow up professionally. Keep a simple list of contacts, dates and responses. If no reply arrives, send one polite follow-up after a reasonable interval, then move to the next lead. Continue attending school and chapter events while applications are pending.

Decision factor What to confirm Why it matters
Pay and experience-credit eligibility Hourly or salary rate, payment schedule, and whether the setting can qualify for the experience program or local equivalent In U.S. AXP Setting A, paid employment is a requirement; an unpaid title alone does not create qualifying credit.
Supervisor access Name and license status of the person responsible for your work, meeting frequency and day-to-day availability Accessible supervision turns assignments into deliberate learning and allows errors to be corrected early.
Range of work Expected mix of drafting, modeling, research, documentation, meetings, site exposure and project phases Variety helps you understand practice and avoid spending the entire placement on one repetitive task.
Feedback and goals Initial learning objectives, review points and how feedback is delivered Regular reviews show whether your skills are improving and whether the role matches what was promised.
Schedule and location Weekly hours, term dates, overtime expectations, commute and remote or on-site requirements A placement that conflicts with classes or imposes an unmanageable commute may not be sustainable.
Project alignment Building types, scales, communities and design questions you will encounter Relevant work keeps you engaged and helps you build a portfolio that supports your next step.

Signals of a well-structured placement

  • A named supervisor explains what you will learn and how work will be reviewed.
  • The firm gives you an understandable first assignment, access to the files or training you need, and a way to ask questions.
  • Check-ins occur on a predictable schedule, not only when a deadline is missed.
  • You can see how your tasks connect to a project’s goals and, where appropriate, to experience competencies.
  • The written offer states compensation, dates, expected hours and work location.

Warning signs

  • No one can identify who will supervise you or how often you will receive feedback.
  • The firm describes the role as “exposure” but will not state whether it is paid, what hours are expected or what work you will perform.
  • You are asked to make professional or code decisions without review, sign documents you are not qualified to sign, or take responsibility for regulated work.
  • The duties are unrelated to architecture despite the title, or remain repetitive after you have asked for a learning plan.
  • School credit is presented as a substitute for wages without checking the rules that apply where you work.

U.S. AXP rules students should understand

The following figures describe NCARB’s U.S. experience framework. Other countries and individual licensing jurisdictions use different terminology and requirements, so verify the rules where you intend to practice.

AXP’s six experience areas

Area NCARB hours
Practice Management 160
Project Management 360
Programming & Analysis 260
Project Planning & Design 1,080
Project Development & Documentation 1,520
Construction & Evaluation 360
Total 3,740

NCARB says experience may be reported after a high-school diploma or equivalent. The hours are a framework for documenting competencies, not a promise that an intern will perform every task in one placement.

Setting A and Setting O

For U.S. AXP credit, Setting A requires at least 1,860 hours in a qualifying architecture-firm setting. The work must be paid and supervised by an architect licensed in the United States or Canada. An academic internship can count when it meets those same criteria, and NCARB says academic internships do not need pre-approval. Up to 1,860 hours may be earned in Setting O outside an architecture firm.

These are AXP program criteria, not a complete statement of employment law. Wage, scheduling and student-worker rules depend on location and circumstances. Use NCARB’s jurisdiction tool and consult the relevant licensing board for additional requirements before relying on an internship for licensure.

Why paid status matters

NCARB President Alfred Vidaurri Jr. said: “Architects have an ethical obligation to compensate licensure candidates for their work and provide meaningful internships that advance their skillset.” NCARB reported on October 18, 2021, that 32 percent of nearly 500 respondents to an NCARB LinkedIn poll had been offered or seen an unpaid architecture-internship listing in the preceding three years. That is a poll result, not a representative estimate of all architecture internships.

Make the placement a deliberate learning experience

Set goals in the first week

Ask your supervisor to identify two or three competencies or skills to practice, the projects where they may arise and the dates for reviewing progress. A goal such as “understand how a drawing set is coordinated” is more useful than “learn documentation.” Agree on how questions should be raised and which files you may edit.

Keep a work log

Record dates, project phases, tasks, feedback and what you learned. For U.S. candidates, maintain the documentation NCARB and your jurisdiction require for reporting experience. Do not copy confidential drawings into a public portfolio; ask what can be shown and how the firm should be credited.

Request varied exposure

Once you have completed an assignment accurately, ask whether you can observe a coordination meeting, site visit, research task or presentation. Explain the connection to your learning goal and respect deadlines. A supervisor is more likely to arrange exposure when the request is specific and your current work is reliable.

Use simple tools appropriately

An architecture sketchbook or drawing pad can support observational sketching, and an architectural scale ruler can help with measured-drawing practice. The AIA guide includes these activities but does not say students must buy particular products. Follow your instructor’s or employer’s requirements before purchasing anything.

If the placement is not working

Raise a specific issue early: explain the task, the missing instruction or the schedule conflict, and propose a check-in or revised plan. If supervision remains unavailable, compensation differs from the written offer, or you are asked to perform unsafe or unqualified work, document the problem and contact your school’s placement coordinator, career office or the appropriate labor or licensing authority. Do not claim experience hours until you have confirmed that the work and supervision meet the applicable rules.

If you do not receive an offer, ask faculty and chapter contacts to review your portfolio, broaden the firm list and look for the next academic term rather than accepting unclear conditions immediately. A short, well-supervised placement that teaches you how a project moves from idea to documentation is more valuable than a prestigious title with no instruction.

A practical checklist before you say yes

  • Have I received the compensation, dates, hours and location in writing?
  • Who is my supervisor, and when will we meet?
  • What tasks and project phases are realistic for my level?
  • How will feedback and learning goals be handled?
  • Can this work qualify for experience credit where I intend to practice?
  • What confidentiality, portfolio and software rules apply?
  • Can I manage the schedule alongside school and travel?

Answering these questions turns an internship from a line on a resume into a supervised introduction to architectural practice.
