What Cuts What? A Practical Guide to Laser-Cutting Different Materials

Laser compatibility depends on source, process, stock composition and machine settings. Learn where acrylic, wood and metals fit—and what to avoid.

There is no universal “laser-cuttable” list: the answer depends on the laser source, whether you are cutting or marking, the material’s exact composition and form, and the machine’s approved settings. CO₂ machines commonly cut acrylic and wood; fiber systems commonly mark metals, but that does not mean every fiber machine can cut them. Check the machine maker’s current guidance and the material’s safety data sheet (SDS) before processing unfamiliar stock—and never laser-cut PVC or vinyl.

Start with the laser source and the operation

Laser compatibility is a match between a particular machine, material and task. Cutting passes through the stock; engraving removes or alters surface material, while marking changes its appearance. A machine that can mark a material may not be able to cut it. Trotec notes that laser type and settings must match the material: its material guidance is a starting point, not a guarantee for every machine.

  • CO₂: Commonly used to cut acrylic (PMMA) and wood. Epilog also lists materials such as paper, cloth and leather for CO₂ cutting, subject to the machine and material details.
  • Fiber: Commonly used to mark or engrave metals. That capability is not evidence that a particular fiber machine can cut metal.
  • Diode: Some machines list wood and certain colored or opaque acrylic for processing. Clear acrylic compatibility varies, and reflective materials can damage a diode module; consult the exact machine guidance.

Manufacturer tables do not describe identical equipment or conditions. Compare the material guidance for your machine with its manual and current settings library; do not treat another model’s compatibility listing as approval.

Which materials can a laser cutter process?

Material Practical starting point What to verify
Acrylic / PMMA Commonly cut on CO₂ machines. Some manufacturer-listed diode systems can process certain colored or opaque acrylic. Clear acrylic compatibility varies by laser type. Confirm the exact machine, acrylic grade and settings. Trotec and Epilog list acrylic among CO₂ cutting materials: Trotec and Epilog.
Wood and wood products Listed for CO₂ cutting; some diode machines also list wood. Species, thickness, adhesives and other treatments affect results and emissions. Check the specific stock and machine settings.
Metals Fiber sources are commonly used to mark or engrave metals. A CO₂ laser may mark bare metal when used with a metal-marking solution. Marking is different from cutting. Do not assume a machine’s marking capability means it can cut metal.
Paper, cloth and leather Epilog lists these among materials for CO₂ cutting. Coatings, dyes, backing and other ingredients can change hazards. Check the stock’s SDS and the machine maker’s rules.
PVC and vinyl Do not laser-process. They can release chlorine gas and damage machine components. See the University of Illinois Division of Research Safety guidance.
ABS, thick polycarbonate, HDPE, polystyrene or polypropylene foam, fiberglass and coated carbon fiber Treat as unsuitable unless the authority responsible for your exact machine explicitly approves the specific material and process. Potential problems include poor cutting, melting, ignition or hazardous fumes. Epilog also warns against epoxy and phenolic resins; check its materials guidance and the stock’s composition.

Why the material’s exact composition matters

A generic label such as “plastic,” “wood” or “leather” does not tell you everything a laser will encounter. Adhesives, coatings, dyes, binders and backing layers can change how stock cuts and what it releases when heated. Two products sold under the same broad material name may therefore need different decisions.

For that reason, check the SDS for the specific product rather than relying on its trade name alone. Epilog recommends obtaining an SDS because laser processing can release fumes, particles or vapors. Its warnings include hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, halogens, chromium-containing artificial leather, epoxy and phenolic resins.

How to check a material before processing it

  1. Identify the exact stock. Record its material, grade, thickness, coatings, adhesives and backing where known. Obtain the product’s SDS.
  2. Check the machine maker’s current compatibility guidance. Confirm it covers your machine and the intended operation—cutting, engraving or marking—not merely a similar laser type.
  3. Use machine-specific settings. For xTool machines, the company says its general material guide is not a substitute for its current settings library, because compatibility and optimal settings vary. Follow the instructions for your own equipment.
  4. Confirm ventilation and operating controls. Use the ventilation prescribed by the manufacturer, maintain filtration where fitted, and follow required training and operating procedures. The University of Illinois Division of Research Safety says a laser cutter must have secure, dedicated ventilation as prescribed by its manufacturer to remove air contaminants.
  5. Do not proceed if approval is unclear. If the machine maker’s guidance and the material documentation do not establish that the exact stock and process are suitable, choose a different material or seek confirmation from the responsible machine authority.

When a compatibility list says “yes”

Read a “yes” as a machine- and process-specific starting point, not permission to use any product with that material name. Trotec’s and Epilog’s tables describe their own guidance; xTool says its list is general guidance and points users to its current settings library for its machines. Compatibility can vary with material form and machine settings, and safe processing also depends on ventilation and operating rules.

In particular, do not infer that a listed metal-marking process cuts metal, that all acrylic works with every source, or that a material is safe simply because it can be physically cut. For an uncertain material, the machine maker’s current guidance, the exact stock’s SDS and the site’s safety procedures should all support the decision.
