The allowed hours depend on local rules and may vary by work type, zoning, noise impact, permit conditions and exceptions. To find the hours for a particular site, check the local government’s construction-noise rules and any permit or variance issued for the project.
How to find the hours that apply to your address
- Identify the jurisdiction. Start with the city or county where the work is happening, then check the relevant regional rules. Schedules from elsewhere are examples, not rules you can apply to your neighborhood.
- Match the rule to the work. Check whether it covers residential building construction, demolition, land development, maintenance, repairs, deliveries or particular equipment. High-impact work such as jackhammering may have a narrower window than general construction.
- Check the zone and the calendar. Rules may distinguish residential from commercial or mixed-use zones, and weekdays from Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
- Review project approvals. A permit or variance may authorize hours beyond the usual schedule. Confirm its conditions directly rather than assuming the standard hours apply.
- Check the noise and complaint provisions. A permitted time window does not necessarily allow unreasonable noise. The local authority’s rules should say which office handles reports and how to submit one.
For a complaint or a project-scheduling decision, consult the current local rule and the site’s actual permit conditions. Government guidance pages can summarize a rule without replacing the applicable code or approval.

| Jurisdiction | Published schedule | Scope and qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Victoria, Australia | Weekdays, 7 a.m.–6 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. | EPA Victoria lists these normal hours for residential construction and demolition. Other construction categories have different windows. Councils may also impose planning or local-law requirements, and some circumstances allow flexibility. This is Victorian guidance, not a national rule. The page was updated 24 February 2026. EPA Victoria construction-noise guidance. |
| New York City | Weekdays, 7 a.m.–6 p.m. | NYC DEP says construction on a property is allowed during this window; other times, including weekends, require after-hours authorization, subject to the applicable code and exceptions. NYC DEP construction-noise rules. NYC311 also describes a limited weekend allowance for alterations or repairs to certain owner-occupied dwellings: NYC311 construction-noise information. |
| Seattle | Generally, weekdays 7 a.m.–10 p.m.; weekends and legal holidays 9 a.m.–10 p.m. | Seattle SDCI lists a window ending at 7 p.m. in specified multifamily and neighborhood-commercial zones. Impact construction generally has separate limits: weekdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and weekends and legal holidays 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Seattle SDCI noise codes. |
| Torrance, California | Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; prohibited Sundays and city-hall holidays. | The city restricts certain noisy construction or repair work in or adjacent to residential areas. Written approval may allow expanded hours under stated circumstances. City of Torrance noise regulations. |
Can construction happen on Sundays or outside normal hours?
It depends on the local rule and the project’s authorization. Some jurisdictions require after-hours approval; others set separate weekend or holiday windows, prohibit certain work, or allow narrow exceptions. NYC, for example, requires authorization for construction outside its ordinary weekday window, while its 311 guidance describes a limited weekend allowance for specified owner-occupied dwelling repairs. Emergency or public-safety work may also be treated differently under local rules. Check the exact provision and any approval for the site rather than relying on a general exception.

Can permitted work still be too noisy?
Yes. A schedule sets when specified work may occur; it does not automatically make every sound reasonable. EPA Victoria says that noise from a construction site during normal working hours can still be unreasonable in some cases, including early deliveries or prolonged jackhammer use. Seattle also gives impact construction separate hours. EPA Victoria’s guidance and Seattle SDCI’s noise rules illustrate these additional limits.
Who should you contact about construction noise?
Use the channel designated by the local authority, since responsibility can depend on the type of site as well as its location. NYC311 accepts reports about construction noise, including activity before or after permitted hours: NYC311 construction-noise information. EPA Victoria says it does not investigate complaints about residential construction sites and directs those complaints to the local council: EPA Victoria construction-noise guidance. For another location, check the municipality’s construction-noise or code-enforcement page for its reporting process.
