Use AI for plan review as a bounded assistant that surfaces possible omissions, mismatches, and coordination issues—not as an approver. A qualified architect, engineer, superintendent, or other designated reviewer must inspect every finding against the governing drawings, specifications, code requirements, and project context before anyone acts on it.
The safest adoption path is a controlled pilot: choose a few repeatable checks, use permission-cleared drawing sets, record false alerts and missed issues, and connect each confirmed finding to your existing comments, revision, QA/QC, and RFI process. Do not describe an AI result as code compliance, constructability approval, or professional advice.

Start by defining what “plan review” means on your project
Construction teams use the phrase plan review for several different activities. AI may help with a narrow document check while being unsuitable for a judgment that depends on site conditions, contract interpretation, engineering analysis, or professional responsibility. Define the task before selecting a tool.
| Review activity | What an AI feature may do | What remains with the qualified project team |
|---|---|---|
| Document completeness and consistency | Flag a missing tag, a discrepancy between sheets, or a pattern that does not match the selected check. | Confirm the governing sheet, determine whether the difference is intentional, and decide whether a correction or clarification is required. |
| Drawing coordination | Compare selected labels, grids, schedules, or other machine-readable elements within the supported files. | Resolve conflicts across disciplines and determine the installation sequence or field impact. |
| Code interpretation | At most, provide information that helps a reviewer locate a possible issue if the product explicitly supports that use. | Interpret the adopted code, amendments, authority requirements, design assumptions, and professional standard of care. |
| Constructability review | Surface a drawing relationship that deserves inspection. | Judge access, tolerances, sequencing, temporary works, means and methods, safety, and actual site constraints. |
| Professional approval | Not a valid AI-only outcome. | The responsible architect or engineer, owner, and other authorized parties make and document the approval decision. |
This distinction prevents a common failure: treating a clean-looking automated report as proof that a set is complete or compliant. A finding is a prompt to inspect the source documents, not a conclusion.

What current construction AI examples actually cover
Vendor documentation illustrates the narrow, feature-specific nature of these systems. Capabilities, supported file types, and availability can change, so verify the current product page, plan, and terms before putting a feature into a contract workflow.
Bluebeam Smart Review
Bluebeam describes Smart Review as a way to analyze a drawing set for selected incomplete designs, scope gaps, and discrepancies. Its documented checks include document health, gridline coordination, door tags and schedules, and plumbing tags. The help documentation states that the feature is available with a Bluebeam Max plan and labels the documentation as preview material. Treat both the plan requirement and the check list as items to confirm at the time of purchase or pilot.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The scope is not universal. Bluebeam warns that low-quality scans can hide issues or produce false alerts. Its plumbing check processes a multi-page schedule one page at a time and compares top-view plan drawings; it does not compare sections, elevations, or details for that check. A result therefore depends on how the set was produced, which sheets were selected, and whether the visual information matches the feature’s supported view.
Autodesk construction AI examples
Autodesk describes Construction IQ as a risk-awareness capability and separately describes Automated Drawing Extraction, which uses optical character recognition to extract attributes from project drawings. These are different functions. Risk awareness is not the same as checking every drawing relationship, and extracting an attribute is not the same as interpreting a code requirement or approving a design. Ask for a feature-level demonstration using your own representative files rather than assuming that one product label covers all review tasks.
Why file quality and review scope control the result
AI can only inspect the information it can reliably read and the relationships its check was designed to evaluate. Before a pilot, establish a file inventory and record the conditions under which each result was produced.
Check the source files
- Use the actual project formats and naming conventions that the team expects to review, including native vector PDFs and scanned sheets if both occur in practice.
- Record whether a sheet is vector-based, rasterized, skewed, low resolution, partially illegible, or missing a title block.
- Confirm page orientation, scale information, sheet numbers, revision dates, and discipline identifiers.
- Separate superseded sheets from the current issue so an automated comparison does not create a false conflict between revisions.
- Identify schedules that span several pages and note whether the selected feature reads them as a set or one page at a time.
- Mark sheets that are sections, elevations, details, or enlarged plans when a check only evaluates top-view plans.
Define the exact check
Write the question in a form a reviewer can test. “Find every design problem” is not a usable acceptance criterion. “Identify door tags on floor plans that do not appear in the selected door schedule” is narrower, traceable, and easier to verify. Define which disciplines, revisions, views, and sheet ranges are included, and list known exclusions.
A controlled pilot: an eight-step adoption procedure
- Appoint an accountable reviewer. Name the architect, engineer, design manager, BIM lead, or construction professional who owns the final disposition of findings. The person should have authority to reject an automated suggestion and to escalate a real issue.
- Choose a representative, permission-cleared set. Select completed or active project files that reflect your normal scan quality, sheet count, disciplines, revisions, and confidentiality requirements. Obtain the owner’s and project data owner’s permission before uploading anything to a trial or external service.
- Create a baseline without AI. Have experienced reviewers perform the selected checks using your normal process. Record confirmed issues, comments, time spent, and the sheets examined. This baseline is for your project and workflow; it is not a general accuracy benchmark.
- Prepare and label the files. Remove superseded sheets from the test set, preserve revision identifiers, and document any OCR, rasterization, or export step. Keep a copy of the exact files submitted so another reviewer can reproduce the run.
- Run only the agreed checks. Configure the feature for the defined sheet range and view types. Record the product name, plan or edition, feature state, date, settings, and any exclusions. Do not silently broaden the test to code review or constructability conclusions.
- Classify every output. For each alert, mark it as confirmed issue, intentional condition, duplicate, unreadable-source alert, unsupported-view alert, or false positive. Also record issues the system missed when comparing its output with the baseline.
- Require human confirmation before action. The accountable reviewer opens the governing drawings and specifications, checks the project context, and records the disposition. Only a confirmed issue should become a design comment, field question, nonconformance, or RFI.
- Decide whether the workflow is fit for expansion. Compare the effort saved with verification time, false-alert burden, missed issues, data risk, and integration friction. Expand only the checks that have a documented owner, acceptance rule, and recovery path.
Evaluate performance without inventing an accuracy percentage
The official materials considered for this guide describe product functions and limitations, not a validated, general accuracy rate for AI plan review. Do not quote a percentage for accuracy, recall, or time savings unless a vendor supplies a clearly defined, independently credible study that matches your files and task.

Your pilot can still produce useful evidence. Keep the measures tied to a defined check and a specific project.
| Measure | How to record it | Decision use |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed findings | Count alerts that a qualified reviewer verifies against the governing documents. | Shows whether the check is producing actionable leads. |
| False alerts | Count intentional conditions, duplicates, unreadable-source alerts, and alerts outside the check scope. | Shows the review burden and where file preparation or configuration needs improvement. |
| Missed issues | Compare outputs with the issues found in the independent baseline review. | Prevents a low alert count from being mistaken for a complete review. |
| Verification time | Measure the time a qualified reviewer spends opening sheets, checking specifications, and documenting dispositions. | Shows whether the tool reduces total effort rather than merely moving effort to verification. |
| Traceability | Check whether each confirmed issue retains sheet, revision, comment, decision, and follow-up links. | Determines whether the result can survive an audit, claim, handover, or later revision. |
| Operational reliability | Record failed uploads, unreadable pages, inconsistent runs, and unsupported formats. | Identifies whether the feature is dependable enough for a scheduled review window. |
Keep the baseline and AI output separate until the qualified reviewer completes reconciliation. A system that generates many alerts may look productive while increasing the chance that a real issue is overlooked in noise.
Build the output into your existing QA/QC and RFI process
AI should produce review work, not a parallel record that disappears after a demonstration. Bluebeam’s construction quality-control guidance emphasizes standardized review sets and QA/QC checklists, recorded comments and decisions, and comparison of drawing revisions so changes feed into follow-up reviews or RFIs. Apply that discipline regardless of the software used.
Use a consistent finding record
For each alert that enters the project record, capture the project, set or package, sheet number, revision, view, check name, alert text, reviewer, date, disposition, and linked action. If the finding is intentional, record the reason and the authority for accepting it. If it becomes an RFI or design comment, preserve the original alert alongside the final response rather than replacing it.
Compare revisions deliberately
Run a new review when a revision changes the sheets, schedules, tags, or assumptions covered by the check. Do not carry forward an old “passed” result. A revision comparison should identify what changed, which prior comments were closed, and which checks must be repeated because the change affects their inputs.
Keep one system of record
Decide where the authoritative comment, response, and approval live. If the AI tool exports a report, store it with the controlled review package or link it from the project document system. Avoid relying on an unversioned download, a personal workspace, or a chat transcript as the only evidence that a review occurred.
Human oversight, professional responsibility, and safe escalation
Bluebeam’s Product and Services Addendum states: “Licensee acknowledges that AI Outputs may be incomplete, inaccurate, non-deterministic, or unsuitable for Licensee’s particular use case.” It also states: “AI Outputs do not constitute professional advice (including engineering, architectural, or safety advice).” These are contractual statements by that vendor, but they express a practical rule for any adoption: treat output as unverified assistance.

Set non-delegable decisions
- Code compliance determinations and interpretations of amendments or authority comments.
- Structural, life-safety, fire-protection, accessibility, or environmental design decisions.
- Acceptance of substitutions, deviations, or field conditions that alter the design intent.
- Approval to issue, build, procure, or close a nonconformance based solely on an automated result.
- Any decision that the contract assigns to a licensed professional, owner, authority, or designated person.
Use escalation thresholds
Require immediate human escalation when an alert concerns life safety, structural systems, fire protection, egress, waterproofing, utilities, or a discrepancy between a detail and a plan. Require escalation as well when the source page is illegible, the view is outside the documented check scope, or the reviewer cannot determine which document governs.
Train the team on language
Use “AI flagged a possible discrepancy on sheet A-___” rather than “the software found a code violation.” Use “reviewer confirmed” only after the governing documents and project context have been checked. This vocabulary helps prevent an automated suggestion from becoming an accidental approval in a meeting minute or transmittal.
Review data-use, retention, and confidentiality terms for the exact feature
Do not assume that a general product privacy statement answers the question for every AI function. Bluebeam’s addendum describes potential use of submitted files, drawings, interaction data, and other information to train models when a customer participates in a trial or beta release containing AI features. That clause should not be generalized to every feature or plan.
Before uploading a project set, have the project’s data owner or counsel review the agreement, feature-specific terms, retention controls, administrator settings, subprocessors, deletion process, and permitted use of outputs. Document the decision for each pilot. If the terms or controls are unclear, use sanitized or non-confidential files until the owner authorizes a broader test.
Minimum data-governance questions
- Which exact feature receives the files, and where are they processed?
- Are uploaded drawings, extracted text, prompts, comments, or usage data retained?
- Can the data be used to train or improve a model, and does a trial or beta condition change that answer?
- What administrator controls disable participation, sharing, or retention?
- How are outputs deleted when a project closes or a subscription ends?
- Can the provider or another customer access project-derived information?
- What contractual terms govern confidentiality, security incidents, and ownership of submitted material?
Compare tools on workflow fit, not marketing labels
The available material does not establish a head-to-head winner or a common performance benchmark. Use a buyer scorecard that reflects your project controls and confirm each item in a live test.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to answer | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Supported files and views | Does it read your vector PDFs, scans, schedules, details, sections, and elevations, or only a subset? | Written scope and a run on representative files, including poor scans. |
| Checks | Which exact omissions, tags, grids, schedules, or discrepancies are supported? | Feature documentation, exclusions, and an export showing the check used. |
| Availability and limits | Is the feature in preview, restricted to a particular plan, limited by users or pages, or subject to change? | Current plan terms and administrator documentation. Bluebeam’s Smart Review documentation, for example, identifies Bluebeam Max and preview status. |
| Review workflow | Can reviewers comment, assign, close, reopen, and link a finding to a revision or RFI? | A complete test from alert through disposition and export. |
| Audit trail | Are source files, settings, timestamps, reviewer identity, and decisions preserved? | Sample audit report and retention behavior. |
| Data handling | What happens to drawings and interaction data, especially in trials or beta releases? | Feature-specific terms, settings, deletion controls, and security documentation. |
| Integration | Does the result fit the document-management, BIM, QA/QC, and RFI systems already used by the team? | Supported connectors, export formats, and an end-to-end pilot. |
| Total cost | What subscription, plan upgrade, storage, implementation, training, and verification labor are required? | Written pricing for your edition and a project-level estimate. No general cost figure is established here. |
Ask vendors to identify what the system does not check. A short exclusion list is more useful than a broad claim that the platform “reviews drawings.”

Low-quality or incomplete scans
Symptom: tags are missed, characters are misread, or alerts cluster on one scanned sheet. Fix: replace the scan with a higher-quality export when possible, record the limitation, and require a manual review of the affected sheets. Do not interpret silence as a pass.

Checking the wrong view
Symptom: the team expects a plumbing check to find a conflict in a section or detail. Fix: confirm the documented view scope before the run. For the plumbing example documented by Bluebeam, the comparison is between top-view plan drawings, not sections, elevations, or details.
Revision contamination
Symptom: the tool flags differences caused only by comparing a current sheet with a superseded sheet. Fix: isolate the controlled issue, preserve revision identifiers, and run a deliberate revision comparison instead of mixing issues.
Alert overload
Symptom: reviewers spend longer dismissing duplicates and intentional conditions than inspecting real discrepancies. Fix: narrow the check, improve naming and file preparation, define exclusion rules, and measure verification time before expanding use.
False confidence after a clean run
Symptom: a report with no alerts is described as a complete or compliant set. Fix: require the designated reviewer to document the check’s scope, unsupported views, source quality, and independent confirmation. A clean result means only that the configured check produced no alert under those conditions.
Untracked decisions
Symptom: an alert is discussed in a call but cannot be found during construction or closeout. Fix: move the confirmed finding into the controlled comment, QA/QC, or RFI system with sheet, revision, owner, response, and closure information.

When AI-assisted review is ready to expand
Expand only when the team can answer “yes” to all of these questions:
- Is the review question narrow enough to state in one sentence?
- Are the supported sheets, views, formats, and scan-quality limits documented?
- Has a qualified reviewer been assigned to every finding?
- Does the workflow record false alerts, missed issues, and verification effort?
- Can every confirmed issue be traced to a sheet, revision, comment, decision, and follow-up action?
- Has the project data owner approved the exact feature, plan, and terms?
- Is there a manual fallback when the service is unavailable or the files are unsupported?
- Does the team understand that AI output is not professional, engineering, architectural, safety, or code-compliance advice?
If any answer is “no,” keep the use case in a controlled pilot. The value of AI plan review is not that it removes professional judgment; it is that a well-governed assistant may help a qualified team notice selected issues earlier while preserving the human review that makes a construction decision defensible.
