1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no universal correct color for a power-strip light. Green, red, blue, amber, or orange may all be normal, depending on the manufacturer and model. Read the label beside the light—such as Power, Protected, or Grounded—and check the exact product manual.
As a general rule, a lit Power light means the strip is receiving electricity. On a surge protector, a lit Protected light usually means its surge-suppression components are still functioning. The important question is not “What color is it?” but “What does this indicator represent?”

First identify the type of strip
A basic power strip adds receptacles and may have an illuminated on/off switch. It does not necessarily provide surge protection.
A surge protector contains additional circuitry designed to limit transient voltage surges. Look for the words surge protector or surge suppression, a stated joule rating, a Protected indicator, and appropriate safety certification for the product. A light alone does not prove that a basic strip contains surge-protection components. Belkin explains the distinction between power strips and surge protectors.

Smart, energy-saving, rack-mounted, and commercial power-distribution strips may use additional indicators whose meanings are specific to that model.
What the labels usually mean
| Indicator label | Normal expectation | If it is absent or abnormal |
|---|---|---|
| Power / On | Lit when the strip is switched on and receiving power. | Check the switch, wall outlet, breaker, GFCI receptacle, and strip. |
| Protected / Surge Protected | Usually lit while the surge-protection components are intact. | Check the manual; replacement is commonly recommended if it goes out. |
| Grounded / Earthed | Lit when the outlet appears properly grounded. | Have the receptacle checked if the indicator remains off. |
| Not Grounded / Line Fault | Usually off during normal operation. | Stop relying on the outlet’s protection and arrange an electrical inspection. |
| Overload / Fault / Service | Usually off during normal operation. | Unplug loads and follow the model’s reset, service, or replacement instructions. |
These are general meanings, not a universal standard. Belkin’s status-light guide shows why the label and model documentation matter.
What different colors can mean
Green
Green commonly indicates power, protection, or grounding. Some Tripp Lite models use green for Protected, while Prime Wire describes green Protected and Grounded indicators as normal statuses on relevant products. But a green light on a basic strip may only mean that its switch is on. It does not automatically prove surge protection.

A red light is not automatically a warning. Philips says its red Protection light means the surge protector is providing surge protection. Some Tripp Lite products use red for a normal Grounded indication, while other models use red for a line fault. Philips documents its red protection indicator, and Tripp Lite’s manual provides a model-specific example.

Therefore, do not replace a strip solely because its light is red. First determine what the red light is labeled.
Blue
Blue often indicates power or normal operation on products designed with blue LEDs. For example, one Austere manual uses blue indicators for Power, Ground, and Protected. Blue does not mean the strip is safer than one using green or red.
Amber, orange, or yellow
Amber or orange may simply be the color of an illuminated switch. Brennenstuhl says that red, yellow, or orange illumination on some of its strips can have the same function as an earlier green glow. On diagnostic equipment, however, yellow or amber may indicate a warning or excessive load. The label and manual decide the meaning.

What it means when the light is off
If the Power light is off
- Make sure the strip’s switch is on.
- Test the wall outlet with a lamp or suitable outlet tester.
- Check whether a circuit breaker or GFCI receptacle has tripped, and reset it only when safe and appropriate.
- Try the strip in a known-good outlet.
- Consult the manual before assuming the LED or strip has failed.
An unlit LED may have failed independently, so it does not always prove that the entire strip is dead.

If the Protected light is off
Treat the surge protector as potentially failed. Belkin says a protector may continue passing power after its Protected light goes out, but it may no longer provide surge protection and should be replaced. Intermatic likewise uses a missing or red indicator on certain updated models to signal diminished protection or a service/replacement need. Follow the exact model’s instructions.
If the Grounded light is off
The outlet may not be properly grounded, or the strip’s ground-detection circuit may have failed. A missing ground indication is not proof of one specific defect, but it is a reason to stop treating the receptacle as fully protected and have it inspected by a qualified electrician.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a lit light prove the outlet is safe?
No. Indicator lights perform limited checks. A lit Grounded light does not identify every wiring defect, loose connection, overloaded circuit, damaged cord, or hazardous installation. A lit Protected light indicates the status the manufacturer designed it to monitor; it is not a complete electrical inspection.
Recommended Free Tools
Arrange professional inspection if the outlet or strip is warm, loose, cracked, discolored, buzzing, sparking, or burning-smelling; if a breaker trips repeatedly; or if an appliance causes shocks or tingling.

Stop using the strip immediately if
- It is hot, melted, cracked, smoking, or visibly damaged.
- You smell burning or hear buzzing, popping, or crackling.
- The cord is frayed or the plug is damaged.
- It has been exposed to water.
- It repeatedly trips a breaker or shows a fault condition.
If it can be done safely, disconnect it from the wall and replace it. Do not open or attempt to repair a consumer power strip.
Choose a replacement by specifications, not color
For computers, televisions, game consoles, monitors, networking equipment, and office electronics, choose a genuine surge protector with a clearly stated protection rating and Protected indicator. Consider:
- Voltage, plug type, and current/load rating suitable for your location and equipment.
- Number, spacing, and orientation of outlets.
- Cord length and plug design.
- A stated joule rating and the manufacturer’s surge-protection claim.
- Appropriate safety certification for the exact product.
- USB or telephone-line protection only if you actually need it.
A higher joule rating can indicate greater listed energy-absorption capacity, but it is not a guarantee against every surge or electrical fault. Do not connect high-load appliances such as space heaters or portable air conditioners through a strip unless the appliance and strip instructions specifically allow it. Do not use a new strip to conceal or compensate for faulty household wiring.

- Red light labeled Protected: It may be normal; verify the manual.
- Green light labeled Power: The strip is probably energized, but this does not prove surge protection.
- Protected light off: Treat the protector as failed and check replacement guidance.
- Not Grounded, Line Fault, or Fault illuminated: Unplug sensitive equipment if practical and arrange an electrical inspection.
- Heat, smoke, burning smell, sparks, or damage: Stop using the strip and replace it safely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a surge protector if the Grounded light is off?
Do not rely on it as a complete protection solution. Have the receptacle inspected by a qualified electrician and follow the surge protector’s manual.
Should I replace a surge protector after a power outage?
Not solely because an outage occurred. Replace it if its Protected indicator goes out, it shows a fault, or it has heat, odor, damage, or other signs of failure.
