For an intermittently operated bathroom fan, use 1 CFM per square foot for bathrooms up to 100 square feet, with a minimum of 50 CFM. For a bathroom larger than 100 square feet, add the recommended airflow for each fixture: 50 CFM for a toilet, shower, or standard bathtub, and 100 CFM for a jetted tub. These are Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) recommendations; choose a model with certified airflow that meets or exceeds your result.
Calculate the CFM your bathroom needs
CFM means cubic feet per minute: the volume of air a fan is rated to move each minute. HVI’s recommendations differ according to bathroom size. They are for intermittent ventilation, not a guarantee of the airflow a particular installation will deliver.
Bathrooms up to 100 square feet
Multiply the floor area in square feet by 1 to get the suggested CFM, then apply the 50 CFM minimum. For example, a 40-square-foot bathroom calculates to 40 CFM by area, but the minimum makes the target at least 50 CFM. HVI’s bathroom fan sizing guidance sets out this method.

For example, a bathroom larger than 100 square feet with a toilet, shower, and standard bathtub has a fixture-based recommendation of 150 CFM. The fixture values come from HVI’s sizing guidance.
Choose a fan with verified airflow
Once you have a target, compare the fan’s HVI-certified airflow rating with that number. HVI’s directory lists certified products and says listed products have been tested according to HVI procedures. Its page identifies the October 7, 2026 edition and says the directory is updated at least monthly, so check the current entry for the exact model rather than relying only on a package headline claim. Select a certified rating that meets or exceeds your calculated requirement. The room calculation alone cannot establish the airflow the fan will deliver after installation: duct layout and site conditions matter. Local code and the manufacturer’s installation instructions also apply to a specific project.
Compare sound, controls, and fit
Sound
Fan sound is rated in sones. HVI’s consumer guide suggests 1.0 sone or less as a target for quiet ventilation. Compare the certified sound rating alongside airflow rather than treating quietness as a substitute for adequate capacity. See HVI’s consumer guide.

Controls and optional features
A timer can keep the fan running after someone leaves the room; a humidistat can automate operation in response to humidity. Lighting and heating are other possible features. These are preference and control choices, not replacements for the airflow requirement.
Installation compatibility
Check the fan’s dimensions, duct connection, discharge route, and whether it is approved for a tub or shower location if you plan to install it there. Placement near the shower or tub can capture moisture close to its source, but only use a model approved for that location. A compatible duct, exterior termination, or timer switch may be needed; electrical and installation requirements vary.

Make sure the installation can move air
The exhaust must discharge outdoors. HVI recommends leaving at least 3/4 inch of clearance beneath the bathroom door to provide makeup air, and running the fan for 20 minutes after use. A timer can help maintain that run time. HVI’s installation guidance covers placement and airflow provisions.
Check accessible duct connections and the exterior termination as part of maintenance; HVI’s maintenance guidance describes these checks. If the duct route, wet-area placement, electrical work, or delivered airflow is uncertain, a contractor can assess the installation. The calculated CFM is a selection starting point, not a measurement of installed performance.
